BMW E36

BMW E36 - the third generation of the 3 series produced from 1990 to 2000 (a total of 2,283,600 cars were produced). Just like in its predecessor, the manufacturer does not stop there and creates absolutely new car with a successful design, simplicity, compactness, a new body type and even more powerful models, but without all-wheel drive.

In 1998, the range of sedans was expanded with the addition of two petrol and one diesel models. The 316i was offered at the beginning with a 105 hp 4-cylinder petrol engine, and in 2001, the engine was replaced with a new one with the VALVETRONIC system, after which the power increased to 115 hp. The 320i sedan was equipped with a petrol 6 -cylinder engine with 150 hp, in 2001 the power was increased to 170 hp. 320d - economical version fourth generation BMW 3 Series. 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with direct injection (for the first time) with a common fuel rail, initially produced a power of 136 hp, later, after the upgrade - 150 hp.

In 1999, BMW produced only one new model, but what… 330d. This sedan has become a sensation. Its diesel engine with common-rail technology initially reached a maximum power of 184 hp and a maximum torque of 390 Nm already at 1,750 rpm. Later, power characteristics were increased to 204 hp. and 410 Nm at an impressive 1500-3250 rpm.

In 2000, the 4th generation of the 3 series is replenished with two powerful gasoline sedans. The 325i is powered by a 2.5-litre 6-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 192 Horse power. The 330i is the most powerful version of the sedan, with a 6-cylinder engine producing 231 hp. and allowed to accelerate the car in 6.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h.

In 2001, two all-wheel drive and one diesel versions of the sedan were released. The 325xi, like the rear-wheel drive, was equipped with a 6-cylinder 2.5-liter gasoline engine with 192 horsepower. The 330xi is the most powerful all-wheel drive sedan. The 318d is an economical version of the sedan with a 115 hp 4-cylinder direct injection turbo diesel engine with a common rail.

In 2002, the latest version of the 330xd sedan was launched into production. It was all-wheel drive modification with a 3.0 liter diesel engine.

E46 coupe

After the successful launch of the sedan in 1998, the E46/2 coupe followed. This version had a sporty and elegant design and standard equipment equipped with sports suspension. Until 2006, about 450,000 coupes were produced.

In 2001, the 318Ci received an all-new N Series engine with VALVETRONIC and 143 horsepower. The 320Ci coupe was equipped with a 150-horsepower engine until 2001, after the update specifications The car has been improved and the power has been increased by 20 horsepower.

In 2000, the 323Ci and 328Ci were discontinued, and two new and more powerful versions were released to replace them. 325Ci - became a replacement for 323Ci, 330Ci replaced the 328th model. In 2003, two diesel versions were delivered to the assembly line. E46 touring

Available since October 1999 new version body E46 / 3 - station wagon, or as the "Bavarians" call it - Touring. This body has become a completely new development and, unlike its predecessor, has been significantly improved in all respects. Between 1998 and 2005, 428,061 station wagons left the Regensburg plant.

The first station wagon models available are the most popular 318i petrol model, the 150 hp 320i (since 2001 170 hp), the 328i with a 2.8-litre engine producing 193 hp and the diesel 320d.

In 2001, the 325xi and 330xi all-wheel drive models were added. Also this year, a 105 hp variant of the 316i was released. In 2002, a budget diesel version of the 318d was introduced, which became the last station wagon.

E46 convertible

E90 sedan

In the fifth generation of the 3 series, unlike its predecessors, all body types of the successors received an individual internal body number. In addition, unlike the E46 predecessor, cars from the E9x series have increased in size and significantly changed in design.

For the first time, a new generation was presented in the spring of 2005 at the Geneva Motor Show, and shortly after the debut on March 5, 2005, mass production of a new three-ruble note in a sedan (E90) started. A little later, the station wagon (E91), coupe (E92) and convertible (E93) were launched into production. The release of the "compact" version was discontinued in the 3 series, and 2004 continued in the new BMW 1 series. BMW F34 Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo - a new body in the 3 series. The BMW 3GT is a 5-door mid-range hatchback or liftback that debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show as the 3 Series Gran Turismo (3 GT) concept.

BMW G20

In October 2018, the seventh generation of the 3 Series, the BMW G20, was presented at the Paris Motor Show. Since March 2019, the sedan has been put into series production at the plant in Munich. Long wheelbase sedan - BMW G28 will be produced at the plant in Shenyang (China).

The BMW E21, the first body of the BMW 3 Series (two-door coupe), was first introduced in July 1975 as a worthy successor to the legendary 2002 coupes (bodies 114 and E10). The car was equipped with the already known and tested M10 engine by that time. In these variants, the car was produced until September 1977, when BMW introduced a completely new six-cylinder engine for the 3 Series. New engine received code M60. Later, in a somewhat revised form, this engine became known as the M20. It was designed to fill the space between the small four-cylinder M10 and the big six-cylinder engines of 2.5 liters and up.

The new engine was called "baby-six" - M60 "little six". The power system of the 2-liter engine was equipped with the same Solex carburetor, the 2.3-liter engine was equipped with a K-Jetronic injector, similar to that used in the 2-liter M10, but with 6 nozzles instead of four. Simultaneously with the engine change, the company made a number of changes to the chassis.

At the end of 1979, new changes were made to the body of the E21. Changes to the engine compartment allowed the engine-driven fan to finally be squeezed into the 6-cylinder models. But in 4-cylinders, I had to make a special radiator fastener to leave it in its original place. The interior has changed somewhat, especially the heating and ventilation control panel. This year, the 4-cylinder M10 engine with an injector, which was produced from 77 to 79 years exclusively for the United States, finally became a thing of the past. Instead, a modification of the M10 1.8-liter engine appeared with a new K-JetronicLambda injector and catalyst.

In mid-1983, the production of the E21 body was discontinued due to the appearance of the next - the second three-ruble body with the E30 index. This car was immediately met with a resounding success, which forced even Mercedes-Benz to launch its famous model 190 (W201) into production.

The premiere of the BMW E30 car took place in 1982, then a coupe appeared, and a year later - a 4-door sedan. The interior leaves no doubt that we have a BMW in front of us - the central part of the dashboard is turned towards the driver. The instruments are informative, the controls are in place. Dissatisfaction can only be caused by the tightness of the cabin. Behind it is better to sit together. Interestingly, access to the rear seat in the four-door “three-ruble note” of the E30 series is much worse than in the two-door one: the rear door opening is narrow and uncomfortable. With the advent of two-door sedans in November 1982 (still the so-called transitional series, later completely modernized in all units) BMW 316 (1.8 l, 90 hp with carburetor), 318i (105 hp) and 323i (traditional inline "six" in 139 hp with injection), all models with a 5-speed gearbox on request, BMW has confirmed its viability. In these cars, the emphasis was on comfort, but within the framework of a sporty style, which was manifested in the interior design: a restrained style of the cabin with functionally executed convenient controls. The success of the model in the first months of sales made it possible to supplement the family program with the 320iA option (2.0-liter 129-horsepower straight-six coupled with a 4-band automatic transmission).

But BMW had to expand this model range too: at the end of 1984, catalytic converters were installed on the 318i (with LU-Jetronic injection system) and the six-cylinder 323 and belatedly replaced the outdated 2.3-liter in-line in July 1985 "six" on a 2.5-liter 171 - strong (325i). In December 1985, new models were launched into production: the 325K (with all-wheel drive) and the 325i convertible. These models, although limited, were in steady demand among lovers of active driving or active pastime. At the same time, the production of economical 324o sedans with purring six-cylinder diesel engines (the first in the history of BMW) began.

In August 1986, fans of the brand were pleased with the appearance of the M3 model with an injection 200-horsepower 6-cylinder 2.3-liter engine. Although, due to the mandatory catalytic converter and due to increased resistance in the exhaust tract, the power was actually 5 hp. smaller. Externally, the M3 was distinguished by extended fenders with low-profile tires of dimension 205/55 R15 and “developed” bumpers and sills. BMW models of the third series in September 1988 were restyled. The cars began to install new headlights. The shape of the back and rear lights has been modernized. In a wide range of engines, a new injection 100-horsepower 1.6-liter engine appeared, which did not differ in either fuel efficiency or acceleration dynamics. But rigid suspension and the tachometer needle, jumping half a scale when you press the accelerator pedal, made us believe that the “316i” is the brother of the M3, but very small and weak. The first station wagons are dated February 1989 (they were produced until 1994). The range of engines for them was completely identical to that of the sedan. The volume of the Touring saloon varies from 370 to only 1125 liters, so this model is not suitable as a pack camel for giving, despite the presence of an all-wheel drive version of the 325K Touring in the range. All engines, in addition to mechanical 5-speed gearboxes, were also equipped with 4-band automatic hydromechanical transmissions. Such cars were mostly popular in the USA and Great Britain. In fact, the sporting focus of the BMW 3 Series, primarily on young wealthy people, was obvious.

In December 1991, the production of sedans (E30) was stopped (the M3 coupe back in 1990), until 1994 only Touring station wagons were produced.

The new "troika" with the E36 index replaced the E30 at the end of 1990. All the advantages inherent in the predecessor (EZ0) have been preserved and even increased in the new family. For a while, the convertible and station wagon were retained from the old lineup. Four-door sedan new series many German tuning companies successfully remade and completed a "la M3. The M3 was equipped with the SMG system (a mechanical 6-speed gearbox with hydraulic gear shifting, which made it possible to drive both automatically and with manual shifting without a clutch pedal).

The convertible of the new model range has changed old model only in March 1993. An easily removable aluminum top is offered as an option.

In January 1995, the 328i appeared with the latest aluminum straight-six (for the US market, the old one with a cast-iron block, 93 hp was retained), replacing the 325i, which strengthened BMW's position in the sector of economical sports models.

The long-awaited station wagon under the traditional name, which was absent in production program year, was introduced in May 1995, when the premiere of the 323i model took place with a six-cylinder 170-horsepower engine that quickly starts and gives out a hundred in just 8 seconds, as well as an even more frisky "328i" (193 hp). Capacity for a compact station wagon is not the most important thing, the image is more important. The capacity of its trunk was only 1030 liters. It is indicative that for the "three rubles" models, it is not the price / quality ratio that is relevant, but the more sublime one - the price / power. Moreover, for BMW quality is responsible, but the matter will not rise for power if the buyer does not stand up for the price. For Russian market the company even developed a special Russian package: increased ground clearance by 25 mm, more soft suspension and an adapted ignition system.
