BMW X 5 53. General specifications. Love # 3: good ergonomics and rich equipment

It's time to face another one. Also from the SUV segment, but of a completely different breed - in 1999 it appeared as a result of a symbiosis of a passenger chassis, all-wheel drive and a crossover body, and until 2006 was in the tops of sales. He is popular today. What is so good and why is the BMW X5 E53 series so bad?

Hate #5: Dubious branded service

Love #5: Cool design and cult status

BMW's SUV had to be just that - looking like a BMW and driving like a BMW. A very successful design, combined with the dynamics, handling and image of the Bavarian brand, instantly made the first "X-fifth" a completely cult car in Russia. And no matter how many years pass, this brilliance will not fade.

Hate #4: Crime Trail

All that was discussed in the previous paragraph, served the model and disservice. Those who survived in the nineties, piloting Grand Cherokee, continued to zero, using just first BMWs x5. As a result, today on the secondary market we have a huge number of severely beaten specimens, as well as shifters, fire victims and other "illiquid assets". In addition, the second and third owners of relatively simple versions of the X5 eventually become "boys" who moved from the "four", in a couple of years they knocked out a suitable copy and put it up for sale again. “Crime” still pursues the model, but now at a smaller level: mirrors, emblems, grilles and other “small things” are often stolen from parked cars for the purpose of resale.

Love #4: body and interior resist time well

Leather Salon BMW The first generation X5 requires only one thing - regular cleaning. This alone guarantees that it will practically not lose its appearance for a couple of decades. The same is true for the body - the quality of painting and anti-corrosion protection is so high that even in the oldest cars, rust is only spotty: under seals, at the points of contact between bumpers and fenders, in wheel arches, and so on. The front bumper and the front of the hood are “sick” with chips, which for Russian roads- a given. There are still a couple of unpleasant sores on the “outside”, noted by many: silumin plates break, which serve as internal fasteners for door handles (the handle stops falling into place when opened), and wiper leashes rust. But these are minor annoyances that are easy to fix. That, surprisingly, is all.

In terms of electrical and electronics, the first X5 still outperforms many modern machines. It is crammed with complex components, many of which work constantly and load the on-board network, and many gradually fail as a result of ubiquitous corrosion, especially on cars that, by the will of fate, turned out to be off-road conquerors (about this incarnation - a little lower). Electric shutters, electric mirrors, cabin fan motor fail, boards corrode rear lights, number plate lights, a button to open the fifth door, as well as blocks located in the rear of the floor and controlling the audio system, navigation, heated seats, parking sensors, and, on late cars, xDrive all-wheel drive. Sensors give errors, the panoramic sunroof jams ... All these randomly arising problems quite often disturb drivers of older X-fifths.

Love # 3: good ergonomics and rich equipment

Even the initial configurations (according to the common expression of noble BMW waters - “empty as a drum”) are filled with useful options so that for simpler brands this level could well pass for the top: electric seats and mirrors, heating of everything that is possible, CD - a receiver with good sound, climate control, xenon headlights ... You may not have a monitor, navigation, panoramic sunroof and air suspension, but you will also be spared from the age-related "migraines" associated with them. But in any version, you will have the feeling that the car seems to be made for you, according to the patterns of your body - everything is in its place here. And the interior remains silent even after twenty years.

Hate #2: Expensive powertrains to maintain

Relatively problem-free in the line of BMW X5 (E53) engines is considered only the basic three-liter 231-horsepower "six". Three-liter diesel engines have obvious age-related problems: wear on the turbine, manifold and glow plugs. And gasoline V8s give BMW the character that everyone expects from it, but along with it they also give disadvantages associated with their high heat load: coking of rings, wear of valve seals, destruction of cylinder coatings, failure of ignition coils, injectors and several gaskets. There are also problems with automatic transmissions: with powerful V8s, the boxes are prone to overheating, and on later cars with the xDrive system, they are in principle less reliable (although economical and quick-firing), plus the rejection of the differential and the transition to all-wheel drive connected through a friction clutch led to problems with this very clutch, and the “flying” clutch clamping system is just one of them.

In the photo: Under the hood of the BMW X5 4.6is (E53) "2002–03

Love #2: great dynamics

Even an in-line petrol “six” accelerates the BMW X5 to “hundreds” in 8.8 seconds. Versions with 4.4- and 4.8-liter engines perform a standard exercise, respectively, in 7 (7.5 if it is a “dorestyle”) and 6.1 seconds. There is also a middle ground - here it's time to make a reservation that in addition to the automatic transmission in the equipment of the "x-fifth" occasionally, but there is a "mechanics" - with a manual gearbox, which is paired with a diesel, which is with a gasoline "six", the car accelerates in 8.3 seconds . But these are all dry numbers, and after all, BMW, albeit rather tired, is always emotions. And if you switched to even the simplest version of the X5 E53 from something more prosaic, the main question of the first minutes will be: “how much more is there under the pedal?”.

2 / 2

Hate #1: Dislikes off-road

Strictly speaking, this statement is debatable, because all-wheel drive (both pre-styling differential and post-styling xDrive) has always been strong point X5 E53, no matter how strange it may sound. He, despite everything that you will read below, due to his advancement, allows you to climb quite far into the jungle, and absolutely road tires. Another thing is that they are still small, “diagonals” cannot be avoided, and approximately on the second or third of them you will leave the bumper skirts, cover the thresholds and overheat the clutch. What can we say about the aluminum levers, which are guaranteed to bend when playing more or less actively in a rally or jeep trial.

Pictured: BMW X5 4.4i (E53) "2003–07

Love #1: loves roads

And all this because the chassis of the "X-fifth" is actually a passenger car, with direct and indirect borrowings from the then Bavarian "five" and "seven". On a flat expressway the car stands like a glove, perfectly “writes” turns and slows down, as few people from the crossover-jeep fraternity still know how to do. In a word, it is an almost perfect example of good, and at the same time absolutely light, handling. The same off-road hodovka in the conditions of the city / highway lives perfectly for years, without requiring any investment and delivering a daily dose of buzz to the owner.

and know that whichever version you choose, owning it will not be especially cheap anyway.

BMW X5, which received the E53 index. According to the old tradition, the model was presented to the public at the Detroit Auto Show. She marked the beginning of a completely new approach to the creation of cars in this class. Many motorists positioned the X5 "BMW E53" as an SUV, but the creators insisted that the car belongs to the class of crossovers with a high degree of cross-country ability and sports functionality.

A bit of history

When creating the first X5, the Germans did not hide the fact that their main task was to surpass range rover by releasing the same respectable and powerful car but with more modern equipment. Initially, the X5 "BMW E53" was produced at home - in Bavaria. After BMW company took over Rover, the car was also produced in the American open spaces. Thus, the machine mastered both Europe and the USA.

Of course, such an auto giant as BMW could not release bad car. The X5 E53 model has everything the company is famous for: build quality, precision electronics, reliability of materials and others. distinctive features"Bavarians". The hero of our discussion today is designed for comfortable trips on any surface and light off-road. In addition, the car was assigned the class of sports cars.

General information

The first generation model had a load-bearing body structure. It was full of electronic systems, equipped with all-wheel drive, independent suspension, as well as increased ground clearance. The E53 series was distinguished by its stylish and spacious interior, which was very discreet, solid and at the same time luxurious. V standard equipment cars included:

  • wood and leather inserts (classic for a German company);
  • orthopedic chairs;
  • steering wheel adjustment;
  • climate control;
  • electric sunroof;
  • very roomy trunk.

To some extent, the E53 model still managed to catch up and surpass the Range Rover. Many details were frankly copied from the legendary SUV: the solidity of the exterior, the double-leaf backdoor. From the Rover, some features also came to the X5 package, for example, speed control on the descent.

Specifications X5 "BMW E53"

The first generation of the legendary crossover was repeatedly refined both externally and constructively. One gets the impression that the Germans wanted to be ahead of their time and bring their creation to perfection. Initially, the car was produced, equipped with three different options. power plant:

  1. benzie new engine 6-cylinder in-line.
  2. Engine 8-cylinder V-shaped. This type of engine was made of aluminum and featured a self-adjusting cooling system, continuous injection and digital electronics. Thanks to powerful engine(286 hp), the car reached a speed of 100 km / h in almost 7 seconds. The motor is equipped with a proprietary Double Vanos gas distribution mechanism, which made it possible to squeeze the maximum speed out of the power plant at any speed. The engine was equipped with a 5-speed engine. This engine was considered the most interesting.
  3. diesel engine 6-cylinder.

Later, new more powerful motors appeared. German mechanics have created an innovative torque distribution system: when the wheel slips, the program slows it down and gives more revs to other wheels. This and much more determines the high cross-country ability of the car as a crossover. Rear axle has special elastic elements, which are based on pneumatics. Even under high load, the electronics maintain the clearance height at the proper level.

The braking system of the X5 "BMW E53" also has its own highlights. Oversized brake discs, together with an emergency stop control program, can significantly increase braking force. The above system comes into effect when full pressed brake pedals. The crossover also has speed hold settings of the order of 11 km / h when descending from an inclined plane. As for the basic versions, a manual transmission was available, and as an option, an automatic transmission. "BMW X5 E53" in expensive trim levels immediately equipped automatic transmission gears.

Despite this abundance positive qualities, the car was far from a real SUV. The frame was soon changed to a supporting body, which, of course, was reflected in all the qualities of the car. The Germans were very fond of automation, although it often prevents the driver from solving this or that problem. For example, when entering a mountain or getting into a rut, the electronics do not allow you to switch to downshift. And on sharp turns, the gas pedal freezes, and you can only bring the car to the desired radius with the help of the steering wheel.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the technical part

Obeying the laws of the market, since 2003 the Germans began to modernize the E53 model:

  1. All-wheel drive has been completely redone.
  2. The xDrive system has been improved as far as possible: the electronics began to analyze the condition of the roadway, the steepness of turns, measure the data received with the driving mode and independently regulate the torque between the axles.
  3. Lateral rolls and damping received automatic adjustment.
  4. Parking has become easier thanks to the presence of two cameras.
  5. The brakes received a system to eliminate moisture from the discs.
  6. The system is so smart that any abrupt removal of the foot from the gas pedal is interpreted by it as preparation for emergency braking.

V-shaped gasoline engine received the Valvetronic system, which regulates the valve travel, as well as the soft intake adjustment. As a result, engine power reached 320 hp. s., and acceleration to the coveted 100 km was reduced to 7 seconds. The maximum speed, depending on the tires, was 210-240 km / h. Another useful change: the 5-speed gearbox was replaced with a 6-speed one.

The upgraded crossover received a new 218 hp diesel engine. With. and torque up to 500 Nm. With this engine, even the most unpredictable obstacles were completely conquered by the BMW X5 E53. The diesel engine could reach speeds of 210 km / h, and accelerated to 100 km in 8.3 seconds.

"BMW X5 E53": interior and exterior restyling

The shape of the body was also slightly changed, and the hood received a new, more expressive grille. The already respectable car began to look even more interesting. However, due to plastic body kit the car seemed a little softer. The bumpers and headlights have also undergone a slight revision. The length of the body has increased by 20 cm, which is quite a lot. The lengthening made it possible to add a third row of seats and make obsessive excesses removed from the cabin and slightly modified the dashboard.

The restyled body has reached almost perfect results on aerodynamics. Its Cx coefficient is 0.33, which is very good for a crossover.

Paying for luxury

All of the above qualities, dressed in a chic shell, could well be the reason for entering the X5 E53 into the ranks of luxury cars, which entails not always pleasant consequences. For example, spare parts for this car cost a lot of money. However, given the Bavarian quality, the repair of the BMW X5 E53 was an extremely rare occupation for the owner. But what really strikes is the appetites of the crossover. With 10 liters per 100 km declared in the passport, it consumes almost twice as much. Another 5 liters - and the consumption will be comparable to the legendary Hammer.

Achievements

Be that as it may, in 2002 in Australia, this model was recognized as the best all-wheel drive car. And after 3 years, she got into Top Gear and thereby confirmed her title. It was by analogy with this car that such famous cars, how Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and

In 2007 history BMW cars X5 E53 ended, and it was replaced by a new X5 with the E70 index.

The BMW X5, which debuted in 1999, was the brand's first production crossover. The production of cars was carried out at factories in the USA and Mexico.

When creating a car, the experience of the British company Rover owned by the Bavarians, which produced off-road vehicles Rover. The crossover had a permanent all-wheel drive system (62% of the torque was transmitted to the rear wheels) and air suspension on all wheels.

The base BMW X5 was equipped with in-line six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, the more powerful version had under the hood Gas engine V8 4.4 developing 286 hp With. In 2002, a “charged” version of the BMW X5 4.6is entered the market with an eight-cylinder engine with a capacity of 347 forces. Gearboxes - mechanical or automatic.

As a result of restyling in 2003, the crossover received an updated design, an upgraded 4.4 engine and a new 360 hp V8 4.8 engine. With. At the same time, the car had a new xDrive all-wheel drive transmission with a clutch in the front-wheel drive.

The BMW X5 was also officially sold in Russia, its main competitors were, and. At first, only gasoline cars, and in 2004, diesel crossovers appeared at dealers.

The first generation of the BMW X5 model was produced until 2006, a total of 617,029 such cars were made.

2nd generation (E70), 2006–2013

The second-generation BMW X5 crossover, which was released in 2006, became larger than its predecessor, acquired an optional third row of seats and lost versions with mechanical box gears. The machine received modern electronic systems: active steering, electronically controlled shock absorbers, adjustable stabilizers, but the air suspension was now only on the rear axle.

The production of crossovers, as before, was carried out at factories in the USA and Mexico, and cars for Russian market assembled at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. In 2006 appeared created on the same basis coupe crossover.

At first, the BMW X5 was equipped with 3.0 (272 hp) and V8 4.8 (355 hp) gasoline engines, as well as three-liter turbodiesels of various capacities. All versions were equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and had an all-wheel drive transmission with a front axle clutch.

In 2007, a "charged" BMW crossover X5M with a slightly modified design, sports suspension and a 555 hp V8 4.4 petrol turbo engine. With.

After restyling in 2010, the "x-fifth" got an eight-speed "automatic" instead of a six-speed one and new turbo engines - three-liter gasoline and diesel engines, as well as a V8 4.4 with a capacity of 408 forces.

Production of the second generation model continued until 2013, with a total circulation of 728,640 copies.

The third generation of the BMW X5 crossover hit the assembly line of a factory in South Carolina, USA in 2013. A year later, the assembly of cars for the Russian market began in Kaliningrad.

The car was created on the upgraded platform of its predecessor, it retained the same dimensions, air suspension at the rear and an optional third row of seats.

The BMW X5 was equipped only with turbocharged engines: gasoline and diesel in-line three-liter “sixes”, as well as a V8 4.4 gasoline engine with a capacity of 450 hp. With. Also, the crossover received a four-cylinder diesel engine with a volume of two liters, developing 218 or 231 hp. With.

All versions had an eight-speed "automatic", and in some markets a rear-wheel drive option was now offered (only for cars with a two-liter diesel engine).

As before, at the top model range the BMW X5 M crossover was located, under the hood of which there was a V8 4.4 gasoline engine with a capacity of 575 forces. In 2015, the BMW X5 xDrive40e, a 313-horsepower plug-in hybrid with a two-liter petrol engine and an electric motor, entered the market.

History of creation

In the 90s, it became clear to marketers that without a prestigious and high-quality mid-size crossover in the line of models, it is difficult to count on success in the American market. As a result, it was decided to develop an appropriate car. It is noteworthy that the result turned out to be excellent - the BMW X5 can be simultaneously attributed to 2 categories - an urban crossover and a full-fledged SUV (albeit with a slight stretch).

The famous designer Chris Bangle, who at that time worked in the BMW concern, took up the matter, and the first sketches of the future model were ready in the second half of the 90s. The work was facilitated by the fact that in those years the BMW concern already owned the British Land Rover, whose experience in the production of SUVs could not be ignored. So, the BMW X5 has a lot in common with the Range Rover L322.

The marking of the BMW X5 (e53) means that the 5th series was chosen as the basis, and the “X” represents all-wheel drive. However, the body of the BMW X5 was 15 cm shorter than the 5 Series, and even wider and taller.

Exterior

1999-2002

The designers did an excellent job - the BMW X5 (e53) came out bright and solid. But the company needed a model that combined these qualities with a bit of sportiness, and the BMW X5 has become just that. Branded "nostrils" of the radiator grille, a relatively small front bumper with an air intake, a sloping hood with several stampings, smooth lines of optics - all this made the full face of the crossover extremely serious, but not "dry".

Lines running through all the body panels gave the model an entourage. And the stern, with its smooth features of the fifth door, spectacular over rear window, almost flat roof, slight ledge rear bumper and verified features of the taillights, completed the composition in the best possible way.

In addition, off-road qualities were emphasized by black plastic inserts running along the sills and wheel arches, and the sporty character, among other things, was manifested in spectacular alloy wheels and low profile tyres.

Restyling 2003-2006

During the facelift carried out in 2003, the appearance of the crossover has changed somewhat. The image itself remained the same, but the hood was retouched, slightly changing its shape, as well as the branded radiator screen. Shapes have changed front bumper, and the head optics and taillights were also finalized.

Engines

1999

In the first generation of the SUV configuration, there were 2 gasoline power units. A more modest, 3-liter M54B30 engine had an in-line cylinder layout and produced 231 hp. With. This BMW X5 3.0i has been a great choice for most customers.

But a much larger version was also available, equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 M62TU engine. The power of such a BMW X5 4.4i was significantly higher - 286 hp. With. Even the weakest, 3-liter engine had excellent dynamics, accelerating a heavy crossover to 100 km / h in just 8.5 seconds, while its more powerful counterpart could compete with many "charged" models. Its feature was the unique Double Vanos gas distribution system, which allowed the engine to operate at maximum efficiency at almost any speed.

year 2001

This year's line power units thoroughly replenished with two more motors. The first was the 3-liter M57 turbodiesel, equipped with the latest system at that time common rail. Its power was 184 liters. with., and the fuel consumption of the BMW X5 3.0d only slightly exceeded 8 liters.

Also available is the new M62B46 petrol engine, a 4.6-liter V8 that develops 347 horsepower. With. This BMW X5 4.6is was perfect for lovers of dynamic driving.

2003

This year's restyling was not limited to just editing the exterior: a 4.4-liter gasoline unit and its 3-liter diesel counterpart were removed from the model.

In place of the turbodiesel, a unit similar in volume was installed, but its power increased significantly - from 184 to 218 hp. With. In addition, this engine had a huge torque of 500 Nm, which allowed you to calmly and confidently drive off-road, climbing any slopes. It was also surprisingly economical, consuming only 8.6 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km, and accelerating the BMW X5 “to hundreds” in just 8.3 seconds.

The 4.4-liter gasoline engine was also replaced by a unit of the same size, but much more technologically advanced and powerful - its output reached 320 hp. With. The motor received the Valvetronic option (valve stroke adjustment system), Double Vanos proprietary technology, as well as a specially designed intake system, with the ability to smoothly adjust the length of the intake tract. His dynamics is excellent - 7 sec. up to 100 km/h, while maximum speed electronically limited to 240 km/h.

2004

This year was the last modernization of power units. In this case, the 4.6-liter V8 was removed from service, replacing it with the same layout, but already a 4.8-liter N62B48 engine with a capacity of 360 hp. With. The BMW X5 4.8is accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds, and average consumption equals approximately 13.5 liters.

In general, given the presence of a 93-liter fuel tank, the power reserve of the SUV is quite decent. Naturally, in this respect diesel BMW X5 is preferred.

checkpoint

The car could be equipped with either a manual transmission (5-speed) or a 5-band automatic transmission Steptronic, and mechanical transmission was available only for diesel modifications. During the update, each of the transmissions received one more gear, however, the “mechanics” were again offered in the database only with diesel engine, while the 6-band Steptronic automatic transmission came with any units.

Chassis

Dorestyling version

The highlight of the BMW X5 was permanent all-wheel drive. As for the chassis, for the sake of comfort and perfect handling, it was made completely independent. Of course, such a decision somewhat reduced the off-road qualities of the crossover, but the engineers practically leveled the gap.

For example, rear suspension was equipped with a unique clearance maintenance system, regardless of the load (static). This became possible thanks to the use of electronically controlled pneumatic elements in the suspension design.

The brakes are distinguished not only by impressive calipers, but also by a dynamic control system that closes the pads even more when the pedal is actively pressed. There is also an assistance system when descending a mountain, which allows you to maintain the trajectory at a speed of no higher than 12 km / h.

In addition, there is a whole electronic Dynamic Stability Control complex, which includes the following systems:

  • Cornering Brake Control;
  • Automatic Stability Control;
  • Dynamic Brake Control.

restyling

The all-wheel drive system has been upgraded. xDrive is programmed to constantly analyze the position of the crossover and optimally redistribute torque between the axles. Also in the design appeared a multi-plate clutch with electronic control.

Interior

Salon is made luxuriously - noble finishing materials, wooden inserts, soft and expensive plastic - all this was widely used during the creation of the BMW X5. It is noticeable that many decisions are taken from the 5th series. The seats and steering wheel have a huge number of adjustments, and the visibility is excellent, only the front pillars wide at the bottom interfere. The multifunction steering wheel is comfortable in coverage, and dashboard as informative as possible and not overloaded with unnecessary sensors. Well-placed air vents harmoniously fit into the interior and quickly create a cozy atmosphere.

But there are also unpleasant moments in ergonomics. This is a mass of small keys scattered on the center console, some of which are also blocked by the gearbox selector.

Thanks to a large glass area, it is always light inside the car, and rear passengers will not have to complain about comfort - there is enough space even for tall people.
