Audi A6 C5 - documentation and photo reports on repair. How to buy the right Audi A6 C5 with mileage: powerful engines - many sorrows All about the audi a6 c5

The next Audi A6 was introduced in 1997 and was produced until 2004. She received a new C5 platform. Her style has become the face of the whole Audi lines. In 2000 and 2001, the Audi A6 C5 entered the top ten best cars, having made a worthy competition to the leaders in its class - BMW 5 and Mercedes E-class.

The body of the Audi was designed taking into account the current requirements passive safety, which allowed the A6 C5 to get a fairly high score for safety. Four "stars" out of a maximum of five - a score earned in the EuroNCAP frontal crash test. One point was deducted for the driver's knee injury.

In May 2001, the "six" was upgraded. The restyled versions differed from the cars of early releases in larger headlights and a right rear-view mirror, new taillights and a chrome trim for the air intake in the bumper (previously only versions with a V8 engine flaunted this). The changes also affected the suspension and powertrain line.

The first "charged" version Audi models The S6 II saw the light of day in late 1999, and in 2003 the even more powerful Audi RS6 sedan and Audi RS6 Avant wagon appeared.

Engines

The car was equipped with both petrol and diesel engines. Petrol were represented by a 1.8-liter in-line four with a turbocharger (150 hp and 180 hp) and without it (125 hp), as well as 2.4 V-shaped sixes (165 hp and 170 hp) and 2.8 liters (193 hp) with 5 valves per cylinder. The most powerful power unit 2.7 liters turbocharged developed 230 hp.

In 1999, a charged Audi S6 was equipped with a 4.2 liter V8 with five valves per cylinder and 300 hp. at the exit. Later, with the help of two turbochargers, the power of the 4.2-liter Audi RS 6 unit was raised first to 450 and then to 480 hp.

In 2001, instead of an atmospheric 1.8 liter, they began to install a 2-liter with a capacity of 130 hp, and a 1.8 turbo with a return of 180 hp. taken out of production. At the same time, the power of the 2.4-liter engine was raised to 170 hp, and the 2.7-liter engine to 250 hp. The 2.8-liter unit was replaced by a 3-liter one, developing 220 hp.

Diesel 1.9 TDI with 110 hp and 2.5 TDI 150 hp after restyling they boosted to 130 and 180 hp. respectively. The 2.5 liter diesel also had versions with 155 and 163 hp.

The body line was represented by the C5 sedan and the Avant 4B station wagon.

The Audi A6 C5 engines are generally quite reliable. But, like any unit, it is not without drawbacks. The main problems are associated with high mileage and inevitable aging, as well as unreasonably high prices for service maintenance in their younger years, which forced the owners to resort to savings.

High-quality fuel is a favorite "delicacy" of a German gasoline engine that prefers 95 or 98 gasoline. Units refueled by the 92nd suffer from interruptions more often than others.

The chain drive resource is at least 180,000 km, but sometimes the chain had to be changed even after 120,000 km. After 200,000 km, the chain tensioner began to “die”. After warming up at idle, the noise of the camshaft chain (knocking) appeared, subsiding with an increase in speed over 1500 rpm.

A lot of problems are caused by an electric coolant temperature sensor, which often “bugs”, nursing from 20 to 150 thousand km. Many owners of the Audi A6 C5 have encountered its replacement. It is not expensive. It manifests itself as overestimated temperature readings, and there may be problems with starting.

After 200,000 km, the catalytic converter required replacement, which, having worked out its resource, began to contribute to an increase in fuel consumption and ate part of the engine power (due to an increase in pressure in front of it). Just as often, he became guilty of "uneven" engine idling.

After 200,000 km, a number of specific diseases appeared. The list includes the loss of tightness of the sealing ring of injectors in severe frost, posing as the appearance of the smell of gasoline. Lost tightness and vacuum hoses - as a result, a noticeable vibration appeared. The ignition coils failed, the Hall sensor (camshaft position) and the oil temperature sensor were required to be replaced. The latter often leaked before his death.

Soon the resource of engine pillows dried up. It was worth monitoring the condition of the viscous coupling of the cooling system fan (from 1500 rubles).

The list of consumables could include a “water” pump and a fuel level sensor. Over time, the hoses of the engine systems and power supply lost their elasticity and dubles. They became fragile, which required accuracy when dismantling them.

After 250,000 km, some owners encountered the problem of starting a hot engine. As a rule, the reason for the failure of one of the links in the following chain: relay, Hall sensor, position sensor crankshaft or a gasoline pump (5-6 thousand rubles).

Often when high mileage starts to "snot" from under valve cover. There can be several reasons: loose cover bolts (which happens very rarely), a clogged crankcase ventilation system - a valve or nozzles (the main reason) or overheating of the engine, which caused the cover to deform. Clogged crankcase ventilation can be identified in a simple way. If the palm applied to the open engine oil filler neck “pushes out”, then the system needs to be cleaned.

Oil consumption at a run exceeding 200,000 km often begins to grow steadily and therefore requires more frequent monitoring of its level. A overhaul gasoline engines (over 100,000 rubles) is almost inevitable after 400-500 thousand km due to exorbitant oil consumption.

The engines of the Audi A6 C5, in the event of an oil pump failure, which happened with high mileage and partial oil starvation, showed miracles of reliability, having endured a “dry” to a car service, without jamming or even turning the liners. The “oiler” on the instrument panel will report a decrease in pressure in the oil system.

The turbocharged 1.8 and 2.7L versions will require extra attention, primarily due to the turbo itself. Its resource is about 150,000 km. Next - either a repair that will extend its life by at least 20-30 thousand km, or a replacement that will make you pay 25-35 thousand rubles. for 1.8 liters and 60-70 thousand rubles. for 2.7 liters, forget about it for another 120-150 thousand km.

Over time, the plastic base of the turbine overpressure valve bursts, and the crankshaft oil seal begins to leak (more often when starting a cold engine).

The fuel pump, aging, will also require replacement, not allowing the engine to squeeze out the "maximum". The weak point is the sealing ring at the heat exchanger, which can burst in severe frost, making room for oil.

2-liter aspirated return 131 hp often suffered increased consumption oils are still in the early stages of production.

The 2.4-liter engine is the most massive among the Audi A6, traveling around the expanses of Russia. Among the common malfunctions, one can single out the current valve cover, and the ingress of oil into the candle wells, which far adversely affects the performance of the spark plugs.

2.8 liters are allocated by increased oil consumption. There may be an oil leak through the cover of the hydraulic chain tensioner. On models older than 1998, the camshaft chain tensioner had a short resource.

A 3-liter unit with high mileage will require gasket replacement intake manifold. In addition, the BBJ version received an aluminum block with a coating on the cylinders, which crumbles with age. The ASN version sometimes upsets the appearance of cracks on the sleeves.

Diesel engines, like all relatives, require more frequent maintenance and good diesel fuel.

The 1.9 TDI is not as dynamic, but economical and rarely breaks down. Until 2001 he had direct injection and a distribution pump, and later received a pump-injector. Among the weak points, one can note the air flow meter and the corrugation connecting the exhaust manifold to the muffler.

After 200-250 thousand km, it is necessary to update the injector nozzles. Pump nozzles reach 400-450 thousand km.

2.5 TDI is much more expensive to maintain. For example, to replace the timing belt, it is necessary to disassemble the entire "muzzle" (25-27 thousand rubles). Until 2002, he had problems with camshafts, rocker arms and valve guides. As a result, the engine began to make noise, vibrate and lose power.

After 220-250 thousand km, it may require replacement of the injection pump (the rotor pair wears out, or the control transistor of the metering valve burns out). The engine was troubled and oil leaks.

After 400,000 km, most likely, a major overhaul of the TDI V6 will be required with the replacement of the piston, turbine and shaft grinding.

Transmission

The cars were equipped with a 5 or 6-speed mechanical box gears, as well as a five-speed "automatic" with a dynamic DSP program, which took into account not only the driving style of the driver, but also the grip of the tires on the road. The built-in Tiptronic system made it possible, if necessary, to switch to manual control.

In 2000, they began to use the Multitronic variator in parallel, which is not very reliable. It could only get front-wheel drive versions.

The four-speed "automatic" relied on 1.9 TDI.

The all-wheel drive version of the Quattro was equipped exclusively with a manual transmission.

Of the gearboxes installed on the Audi A6 C5, the mechanical one turned out to be the most tenacious, caring for at least 200,000 km until the first signs of poor gear shifting. Synchronizers usually wore out, and with high mileage, the differential. The cost of replacing the clutch will be around 13,000 rubles.

The automatic transmission is a little more capricious, and the most unreliable is the Multitronic CVT. The main cause of variator failures is the ECU, the failures of which lead to the breakdown of the box. The chain used instead of the belt required replacement after 100,000 km. However, sometimes the variator without problems reached up to 200,000 km, followed by expensive repairs that extended the “life” by 40-70 thousand km.

Tiptronic is more tenacious than Multitronic. The declared resource of automatic transmission is about 300,000 km. But in reality it is much less - about 150-200 thousand km. Main problems: failure of the oil pump and wear of the clutches. As a rule, after 200,000 km, jerks and shocks appeared when switching. You will have to pay at least 100,000 rubles for the bulkhead of the box. A contract node (i.e., used with a symbolic guarantee) will cost 40-60 thousand rubles.

The all-wheel drive system does not cause any particular complaints. However, when examining the all-wheel drive version of the Quattro, special attention should be paid to silent blocks, oil seals front axle, differential and rear axle. The gearbox may buzz after 300-400 thousand km (bearings). Soon it will be the turn of the rear drive shafts and cardan shaft(the crosses and the outboard bearing wear out).

Chassis

Suspension Audi A6 2, depending on the operating conditions, runs from 80 to 100 thousand km. The most expensive is the aluminum front suspension. A set of five lever pulls out 20,000 rubles. The lower rear arms give up faster.

rear multi-link suspension(Quattro versions) are much more enduring. And the rear beam is almost eternal. However, when the tires are worn rear axle With inside the entire beam will need to be replaced.

Hub bearings and CV joints nursed for 200,000 km.

The power steering pump will last up to 200-300 thousand km. A little later, you will need to repair or replace the steering rack (12-15 thousand rubles).

On machines older than 99-00, brake hoses require increased attention. Due to a design flaw, when the drainage in the body is clogged, water enters the vacuum brake booster. The new VUT will force you to part with 6-15 thousand rubles.

Body and interior

The design of the car, even despite its considerable age, is worthy of the most flattering reviews. No less advantages and paintwork, especially not touched by an accident. But with age, the wheel arches begin to bloom, sometimes the paint around the door hinges swells. Corrosion pockets can appear under the sealing gum at the bottom of the doors and on the thresholds. The fifth door of the Avant station wagon sometimes “gets sick” under glass. And clogged drains and leaky seals contribute to the ingress of moisture under the floor covering, which contributes to floor corrosion.

Chrome inserts darken over time, and on the molding - under the headlight - chrome begins to peel off. Often, the edges of the lower door moldings move away due to loose fastening - metal inserts that are susceptible to corrosion.

With age, regular optics go blind - reflectors burn out. A new set of headlights is available for 25-30 thousand rubles.

The interior of the car has good sound insulation and is very quality materials finishes that will not pester with their creak. The only creaky detail is the rear double seat, which shuts up when there is a passenger. You can fix the situation by sizing the plastic on the sides of the seat.

Another weak point is the plastic glass guides in the doors. Most often in the driver's door due to its frequent use. At the same time, the windows do not close completely, returning down. Sometimes silicone grease helps if the cause is banal souring.

Electronics is the trouble of the overage Audi A6 C5. For example, the arrows of coolant temperature sensors, fuel level and other indicators take on a life of their own or are too silent. There is only one way out - complete replacement dashboard. Morell boards from 2000-2001 are especially affected by this. In addition to a simple replacement dashboard often requires flashing the control unit.

With age, the dashboard display surrenders. On the Chinese Internet site, an analogue can be purchased for only 500 rubles.

The ABS ECU and Air Bags malfunction - often the cause is oxidation of the contacts and tired soldering of the unit.

The unfortunate location of the comfort unit leads to loss of control of windows and light in the cabin. It is located under the driver's mat, and water gets on it.

Often the door switches built into the locks are “buggy” or completely fail. The disease is treated only by replacement - the locks are not separable. Short-lived and control relay "turn signals" and alarm- built into the "emergency" button.

After 300-400 thousand km, you have to repair or change the generator (from 8,000 rubles) and starter. And after 350-450 thousand km, the clogged heater radiator loses its effectiveness (4-14 thousand rubles).

Conclusion

Most Audis are imported to us from Europe. There are not so many officially sold in Russia. Often you can meet representatives from overseas - from the American mainland. They have a very insignificant list of differences from their European counterpart.

Time takes its toll, and the owners of the current Audi A6 C5, one way or another, are forced to visit a car service with various problems. Primarily, average mileage before the first serious breakdown was at least 200-250 thousand km. There are instances that did not cause trouble to the owner, and up to 300,000 km.

When choosing and buying a used Audi A6 C5, do not rely on the odometer. Almost all C5s, especially those imported from abroad, have twisted mileage, and an adapter for controlling the odometer counter can be inexpensively purchased on the Internet. Therefore, you should not flatter yourself when you see a car with low mileage and an age of about 20 years.

Good day, dear drivers.

I'll start with the purchase history. Having sold the Volvo VX70, mainly because of the "dishonest" all-wheel drive, I wanted something with real all-wheel drive (mainly for my own safety). On reflection, I decided that I finally had to fulfill my childhood dream. Somewhere in 1999, my father looked after himself A6 C5, but never bought it. Well, as they say, I have a sediment in my soul. I was so crazy about the so-called. behind the "plum" that more than one "five-year plan" saw them off with an envious look. You have to try everything in life, and basically for the experiment, I decided to order a car from the USA.

Decided to take through a friend of a friend, which later regretted. It is after this person that I even write down any little thing by a bilateral agreement on paper. Phoned, I described the requirements (only dark color, only light skin, only automatic transmission, only sedan and only quattro). As it turned out, I was able to go to the auction myself (test entry for 72 hours, then you change your e-mail and get "eternal" access) and looked through the description of the car and photos, I didn’t even consider cars without photos. In general, for three weeks, all the options I liked left at a price that was too high for me. One evening, a "friend of a friend" calls me :) and quickly says, they say: "just now a car drove under the camera, it's black, it's driving by itself, will we trade?". I agreed, the auction was won, and I walked around with a satisfied smile for the whole evening. I didn’t have more smiles from communicating with an “acquaintance of an acquaintance” (in the future I will call him X ...) :)

I waited for twenty days until my brother in the USA X finally gave me a photo of the car, then for another month the American did not give documents for the car, later it turned out that the car would not start, the interior was wildly worn out and there was no instrument panel in it. In general, H.. himself offered to give up the car and look for another one. And time was running out, in Belarus since July 01, 2011. customs clearance was raised to the level of the Russian one. In general, I quickly chose another car and two weeks later it was loaded into a container. In Lithuania, there was already a stir in the port of Klaipeda, the Belarusians did not have time to pick up the cars. In general, in order for my car to clear customs in time (at that time for $1,800), H. In general, I got a visa, I'm calling - already X .. does not reimburse me :) Tired of this circus, deciding that a car under the booty is more important than looking for methods of influencing X .., I went to Klaipeda. The container should have already been unloaded, according to X.. We arrived - as you guessed, the container was not unloaded. I ran around the port, gave bribes (by the way, they don’t take much at all) and finally my container is unloaded without a queue. This is a separate conversation, how the container is opened, and my “swallow” hangs from the ceiling on cables, how it was removed with a fork unloader, how U-shaped racks were knocked out with the same loader (from the floor to the bottom). In general, they roll out the car, I sit down - it starts with half a turn, the engine works perfectly.

Finally about the car :)

Departure from the port of Lithuania. The engine whispers, the box switches perfectly, the suspension is killed. Killed so much that by the time I got home, my hand hurt for another two days (the steering wheel was moving to the right, I had to rest my elbow on the armrest). I go to the border and try to exclude a non-working suspension and find what is good in the A6 C5 in general - I could not. Already decided to come home and immediately put up for sale. I got to the customs - there is a queue for 137 cars for customs clearance (9 days before the increase in duties). I stood at customs for 29 hours, revealed my hidden reserves. I never yelled at anyone like that before or after :) You can’t fall asleep - you immediately go around the queue, smart people don’t get to the end of the queue, but try to get closer to the barrier. In general, I stood right in the middle of the road and did not let the “wise men” pass, yelled at those who drove around me, when I still accidentally fell into the kingdom of Morpheus, pulled the keys out of the ignition and threw them into the swamp from those who nevertheless went around the queue .

I went through customs - I can’t fall asleep, even though you ... Well, I’m driving 250 km to the house. I fell asleep twice (woke up because I felt my chin on my chest), I stop at a gas station, I suffer for half an hour - I can’t fall asleep.

Well, finally about the car :)

Made a suspension - fell in love with the car. At first, I could not learn how to dose the pressing of the gas pedal, I constantly accidentally left with a wild margin at traffic lights (although I never did this on purpose). And how the car behaves on a dirt road. Where I drove 50-65 km / h on a Citroen C5, I drive 90-95 on a quattro and the car does not leave the trajectory at all. I was afraid of the aluminum suspension, but I bought levers from a friend of "average" quality and spent only $ 200.

The restyled A6 C5 has a very weak coating on all kinds of buttons, it slips off at the moment. New items to buy toad strangles. I treat with black nail polish.

The average consumption turns out I have 12 liters on the 95th. Pure track 9.5 liters. 90% city - 12.9 liters. Meryl not by on-board computer, but by filling the tank completely. Despite the volume of 3.0, I am not an aggressive driver, I like a measured ride, I am more comfortable cruising even in the city, when there are long stretches with a limit of 40 km / h. Maybe that's why I have a rather modest expense for such a car.

Ergonomics... It is convenient to reach the buttons and other heresy, but I just can't find a comfortable position on the seat (height 187cm), something somehow uncomfortable. Although there were no complaints from other drivers.

The ABS control unit was immediately faulty (Audi C5 disease). Because for Belarus, I have a rare engine size, then after 2.5 unsuccessful searches I bought a used one on eBay in the USA.

While the "check" error is on, the catalysts were officially said at the service. In general, I buy flame arresters at the moment.

too much for me soft suspension, when you want to dynamically enter the turn, the car is too sausage (in comparison with my so far unsurpassed ideal BMW car E39).

The on-board computer reads poorly. As soon as the panel heats up, nothing can be disassembled at all. As I understand it, it is treated by replacing the screen.

I like that the car is popular, just a little bit - without any problems, all spare parts are available. The car has a rather weak electrician, which sometimes manifests itself in me. Somehow the turn signals stopped blinking (Audi C5 disease), removed the block under the emergency gang button, disassembled it - assembled it, it worked (mysticism).

The steering wheel is uncomfortable, somehow thin, not bulges under the natural grip of the hand.

Audiopreparation costs BOSE, in principle, I like it.

The head light suits, but the dipped beam is still worse than in the C5 Stroen (better than in this Citroen, I have not seen the dipped beam anywhere else).

The leather is strong, although there is a cut under the driver, but on the other seats it is almost not cracked. Brakes are enough. The trunk has a small loading height, sometimes not enough.

I don’t drive fast (I set 97 km / h on a cruise), I like to dynamically enter a turn, overtake someone sharply with a roar of the engine. 60 percent of the ride I have a city without traffic jams. I ride mostly alone.

Rare rear passengers still complained that they were uncomfortable.

The salon often creaks, I can’t figure out where. Creaks float around the cabin, constantly moving.

Joints on the road and pits are good, the suspension travel is not bad.

Summary: In terms of dry road performance, the Audi has not surpassed the BMW. If it weren't for the winter, I would only ride a BMW. It tenaciously enters turns (all passengers are thrown around the cabin, and the car does not leave the trajectory). The car is solid enough. Finishing quality is not very good, ergonomics are excellent (if you forget about the seat). I don’t really like the soundproofing, I know that in a car with an “S” nameplate, the soundproofing is much better. Ground clearance sufficient.

Of the repairs, I only had: suspension before, oil change, air quality sensor replacement ($85).

Waiting for winter, I want to get high from safe driving in bad weather on a Quattro.

General information

On the audi cars A6 is equipped with four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines. On four-cylinder engines, the cylinders are arranged in series in a row, and on six-cylinder engines, the cylinders are arranged in two blocks of three cylinders, at an angle of 90 ° to each other.

Therefore, these motors are also called 6V. Engines are cooled with coolant. The engines are located in engine compartment along the axis of the car.

The cylinder block is made of gray cast iron, and the cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy and is bolted to the cylinder block. 125 hp engine block only made of aluminum alloy. An oil pan is attached to the bottom of the engine block, into which oil flows, which is necessary for lubricating and cooling the engine.

V gasoline engines and the 2.5-I-TDI diesel engine uses a cross-flow pattern where air enters the engine cylinders from one side of the engine and exhaust gases are exhausted from the other side of the engine. With this engine design, cylinder filling and more efficient gas exchange are significantly improved, so that the energy of the air-fuel mixture is used most efficiently.

Engine 1.8-1. Each engine cylinder has three intake and two exhaust valves. The valves are driven by two camshafts. One camshaft controls the intake valves and the other camshaft controls the exhaust. The camshaft that controls the exhaust valves is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft pulley. The camshaft that controls the intake valves is driven by a chain from the camshaft that controls the exhaust valves.

Diesel engine 1.9-l-TDI. The camshaft mounted in the cylinder head is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft pulley. To supply fuel to the engine cylinders, a high pressure fuel pump is used, flanged to the side of the cylinder block and driven by a toothed belt.

Diesel engine 2.5-l-TDI. This is an engine developed by AUDI and first installed in the A6. Each engine cylinder has two intake and two exhaust valves. Each section of the cylinder block has two camshafts. The camshaft that controls the intake valves is driven by a “toothed belt” from the crankshaft pulley. The exhaust camshaft is gear-driven from the intake camshaft. Fuel pump driven by a separate toothed belt.

Engines 2.4- and 2.8-1. On the V6 gasoline engine, as well as the 1.8-1 engine, three intake and two exhaust valves are installed on each cylinder. There are two camshafts on each section of the cylinder block. The camshaft that controls the exhaust valves is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft pulley. The camshaft that controls the intake valves is driven by a chain from the camshaft that controls the exhaust valves.

All engines. The intake and exhaust valves are controlled by the camshaft via hydraulic tappets. Adjustment valve clearances is done automatically using hydraulic pushers and does not require manual adjustment.

To supply oil to the rubbing surfaces of the engine, an oil pump is used, which is located in the oil pan. On a V6 petrol engine, the oil pump is mounted on the front side of the cylinder block. On the V6 TDI engine, the oil pump drive chain also drives the balance shaft, which reduces unwanted engine vibrations.

Water pump on 150 HP engines attached to the side of the engine block.

The water pump is driven by a separate belt. The wide V-ribbed belt also drives the alternator, power steering pump and, if equipped, the air conditioning compressor. On 125 hp engines. and the V6 water pump is located at the front of the engine and is driven by a toothed belt. Keep in mind that the engine cooling system must be filled all year round with a mixture of antifreeze and water with a low lime content:
The preparation and ignition of the air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinders is carried out by the engine control system, which does not require adjustments. Ignition timing and rpm idle move controlled by the engine management system.

The information is intended for models Audi A6 C5 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 of release.

This Audi A6 model was produced from 1997 to 2004 on the new C5 platform. The body was designed in a special way, which allowed the A6 C5 to get a very high safety score - 4 cherished stars out of 5 possible. The car was produced in sedan and station wagon bodies.

In 1999, the first and very small restyling of the A6 C5 model took place. The updated models received a reinforced body, the headlights underwent changes, the shape of the fog light, rear-view mirrors changed. The instrument panel has also been changed. In the same restyling, two new engines appeared with volumes of 2.7 liters (biturbo) and 4.2 liters .. Also for monodrives (not "Quattro"), automatic transmission CVT type "Multitronic".

In 2001 (model year 2002) there was a second restyling of the model, which affected not only appearance, but also suspension settings, and a line of engines. Headlights, depending on the choice of configuration, could now be both xenon and bi-xenon, changed rear lights, the shape of the bumper was changed, the right rear-view mirror was brought to normal size, the chrome-plated body parts were replaced with matte aluminum. The instrument panel now had a border also made of brushed aluminum. The climate system has learned to automatically recirculate air depending on its purity. The audio system has also been improved. 2.8l engine. was discontinued, the rest of the many engines were upgraded with an increase in their power. The Tiptronic automatic transmission has acquired a "Sport" mode in exchange for the old gradation of "2-3-4" modes.

More about the Audi A6 C5 engines:

Gasoline and diesel engines were installed on the A6, which proved to be quite worthy. Petrol: 1.8 with a turbine (in modifications AEB, ANB, APU, ARK, AWL, AWT) - 150hp, (AJL) - 180hp without turbine (ANQ, AJP, AQE, ARH) - 125 l. / forces, V-shaped six-cylinder 2.4 l. (AGA, ALF, AML, APS, ARJ) - 165 l.s., 2.4 l. (BDV) - 170 l .With. and 2.8-liter internal combustion engine (AHA, ACK, ALG, AMX, APR, AQD) - 193 l / force), turbocharged 2.7l (AJK, AZA) - 230 and 250 hp, 4.2-liter V8 (ARS, ART, ASG, AWN) - 300hp for S6.

A little later, the manufacturer equipped the 4.2-liter unit with two turbines (BCY), which made it possible to remove 450 “horses” from it. In 2001, the atmospheric 1.8 was replaced with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine (ALT) - 130 hp / hp, the 1.8-liter turbo engine was completely removed from the assembly line, the 2.8-liter internal combustion engine was replaced with a 3.0-liter (ASN) - 220 hp / hp.

Modifications and characteristics of gasoline engines AUDI A6 C5:

Diesel engines are represented by 1.9-liter TDI (AFN, AVG) - 110 l./force and 2.5 TDI (AFB, AKN) - 150 l./force. After restyling, their power was raised to 130 (AVF, AWX) and up to 180 (AKE, BAU, BDH, BND) Horse power respectively. There were also modifications. diesel engines 2.5TDI with 155 (AYM) and 163hp (BDG, BFC), but they are not very common in the CIS.

Modifications and characteristics diesel engines AUDI A6 C5:

The Audi A6 was equipped with a 5-speed manual, 4-speed or 5-speed automatic transmission with DSP function, which not only adjusted to the driver's driving style, but also took into account the degree of tire adhesion to the road surface. The Tiptronic function made it possible to transfer the box to manual control. Since 2000, the A6 began to be equipped with a Multitronic CVT, which cannot be called reliable. 4-automatic transmission was installed on version 1.9TDI. All-wheel drive A6 was equipped with a manual transmission, or a 5-speed automatic transmission.

    Audi A6 C5 1997-2001

All used A6s in the C5 body already have a decent mileage, and their problems have already been thoroughly discussed on all Internet forums, so we can make an unambiguous conclusion about their reliability: the Audi A6 is a real high-quality german car, which does not cause trouble to the owner with proper maintenance. Most of these cars were brought to us from Europe, some of the cars were brought from the USA.

But still, in spite of high reliability time does not spare anyone. At the moment, the mileage of these cars has already exceeded the mark of 200 thousand km, some have dashed off more than 300. Consider this, and do not "enter" when buying such a car on ads with a mileage of 120-150 thousand km.

But it is worth noting that, despite the considerable age and mileage of the paintwork of this car, which did not get into an accident, it still holds up well. Only on the very first models can you find swelling of the paint on wheel arches, near door hinges and in some other places. Such durability of the paintwork is achieved thanks to Audi's galvanized body technology.

Salon A6 is solid, soundproofing is at a sufficient level and without “crickets”.

A6 motors are reliable. Their main problems are caused by the current high mileage and aging over time.

A6 loves quality fuel: 95 or 98 gasoline, those who filled it with 92 got problems before the rest.

    Audi A6 C5 Avant 1997-2001

The timing chain resource is about 180 thousand km, but in practice it is better to replace it every 120 thousand km. For motors with a timing belt drive, the belt needs to be replaced every 60 thousand km, along with the rollers and the belt, the pump must also be changed.

One of the common problems of the A6 is the coolant temperature sensor, its “glitches” do not depend on the mileage, they can start already at 20 thousand kilometers. But the sensor is cheap, its replacement is insensitive to the wallet.

On runs close to 200 thousand, the catalyst often already fails, which is accompanied by a loss of power and an increase in fuel appetite. Usually it is changed to a "trick" with a flashing of the "brains".

Very often, at this mileage, the A6 starts to ooze oil from under the cylinder head cover. The reasons for this can be both corny loose bolts, and a clogged ventilation system of the KG, and even deformation of the internal combustion engine as a result of overheating. A clogged crankcase ventilation system is determined as follows - with the engine running, open the oil filler cap and cover it with your palm. If the palm is repelled by gases, then the system needs to be cleaned.

    Audi A6 C5 2001-2004

On a run of more than 200 thousand km, the oil appetite of the engine begins to grow, but we must pay tribute to the German engineers - it usually does not exceed the declared liter per thousand km.

The hydraulic chain tensioner after 200 thousand usually already exhausts its resource. The need to replace it will be reported to you by the knock of the camshafts, which is most noticeable on idling, and it increases at a speed of more than 1.5 thousand.

The most common engine on the A6 in our country is the 2.4-liter gasoline engine. Leaking cylinder head covers and oil in candle wells (due to valve cover gasket leakage) can be called its massive problems.

Motor 2.8 has an increased oil appetite. For cars built before 1998. The hydraulic timing chain tensioner failed very quickly.

    Audi A6 C5 2001-2004

A6 diesels love high-quality fuel and timely competent service. The weak point of 1.9 TDI engines can be called the muffler corrugation. 2.5-liter engines until 2002 were distinguished by problematic camshafts. The rotor pair of a diesel high-pressure pump fails after 200-230 thousand kilometers. There is no way to do without replacing the injection pump. At 400 or more thousand kilometers, a major overhaul of the A6 diesel engine is necessary with the replacement of the turbine and grinding of the shaft.

The most reliable of the gearboxes installed on the A6 C5 is considered manual transmission, working more than 200 thousand km without problems. "Automatic" Audi is more capricious than "mechanics", but most of all "hemorrhoids" are delivered to the owners by the "Multitronik" variator.

    Interior Audi A6 C5 2001-2004

Automatic transmission "Tiptornik" serves approximately 170-200 thousand km, although the manufacturer claims its resource is 300 thousand. The box fails due to wear of the clutches and failure of the automatic transmission oil pump.

The resource of the power steering pump is quite large - about 300 thousand km. On cars before the year 2000, it is worth paying special attention to the brake hoses.

For old A6 (until 2001) weak point can be called an electrician. Over the years, they begin to "glitch" dashboard, the arrows on which either begin to move randomly, or vice versa - freeze in place. It is treated only by replacing the entire panel.

A6 suspension resource depends on operating conditions. It works properly 70-100 thousand km. Its expensive place is considered to be aluminum front suspension arms. Ball bearings change only assembled with a lever, and there are 8 levers in front. But, now the levers can be restored with high quality, which significantly reduces the cost of repairing the A6 suspension. Behind the A6 is a beam. Here are her silent blocks (there are two of them) are very expensive. It’s better not to save on replacing them, high-quality smart blocks will make you forget about problems with the rear beam for a long time.

CV joints and wheel bearings serve almost 200 thousand kilometers.

In general, the Audi A6 is a fairly reliable and sturdy car. When choosing such an instance, secondary market it is highly recommended not to spend the last money, and even more so - to borrow. All presented instances have an average of 200,000 mileage, which means that the resource of many elements of the machine has come to an end, so it is necessary to have some amount to restore worn-out elements. But after all necessary repairs A6 will not cause trouble to its owner for a long time. Remember - if you want to drive without problems, then saving on spare parts for Audi is unacceptable!

    Crash test Audi A6 C5:

Audi A6 (C5) 1997 - 2004 - car in best traditions business class. Decent, solid, respectable. No excessive aggression, like the BMW 5-series, and no pomposity and snobbery Mercedes E class. Tons of merit. Few shortcomings. And still - most buyers will pass by and not turn around. And why? Expensive. Very expensive. And it's not even the cost of the car itself.

Brief introductory

The second generation Audi A6 was produced with two body types: sedan and station wagon (Avant). There are more offers for the sale of station wagons on the Belarusian market, but there are also a lot of sedans, so there are plenty to choose from.
You can also choose based on the level of equipment. As befits a car of this class, the list is even basic equipment The Audi A6 is impressive: four airbags, power steering, front power accessories (windows + mirrors), ABS, central locking, height and depth adjustable steering column, separate climate control. Frequent and instances in which there is traction control system ASR, ESP motion stabilization system, heated seats, on-board computer and cruise control. The most equipped modifications can be recognized by xenon headlights, leather interior and wooden inserts on doors and center console. In such a car, in addition to all of the above, there are such expensive options as navigation system GPS with TV tuner, power seats with position memory, steering wheel heating and other "joys of life".

Body and electrical equipment

The fully galvanized body is durable and does not corrode.
Of the "electrical" problems, the most common are problems with power windows (especially in the driver's door) and problems with door lock rods. They are typical for cars manufactured before 1999. Sometimes the airbag malfunction light comes on. Most often, the reason is an oxidized contact on the plug under driver's seat. The same problems with contact oxidation are found in turn signals and windshield wipers.

Engines and transmissions

The Audi A6 (C5) was equipped with V6 and V8 petrol engines. There is no structural difference between them, the difference is only in the volume and number of cylinders.

The 1.8-liter engine (125 hp, installed on cars until 1999) has problems with starting in wet weather. The "disease" is treated by reprogramming the control unit. Turbocharged 1.8-liter unit with 150 or 180 hp. dangerous for a potential buyer with a failed turbine (its service life is about 150 thousand kilometers). V two-liter engine(130 hp) plastic elements of the crankcase ventilation system are often destroyed.

The most popular in our market are models aggregated with a 2.4-liter engine - and for good reason. They are the most reliable. The servicemen gave the title of "the most unsuccessful modification" to version 2.7 Bi-Turbo. Uneven engine operation, short resource, low maintainability are serious arguments against Audi purchases A6 with this motor.

We rarely come across cars with 4.2 liter engines, and their only and main drawback, in addition to fuel consumption, is the high cost of maintenance.

The entire range of diesel engines with a volume of 1.9 liters (110, 115, 130 hp), as well as a volume of 2.5 liters (150, 155, 163, 180 hp) is represented on the Belarusian used car market. It is worth remembering that Audi diesel modifications are very sensitive to the quality of fuel and oil. 2.5 TDI engines often leak shaft seals and gaskets, which indicates clogging of the crankcase ventilation system. It should also be remembered that unqualified service fuel system can lead to failure of the high-pressure fuel pump pump, which cannot be repaired (and its cost is comparable to the price of a used car - from 2500 USD).

All A6 engines have an enviable oil appetite. This is typical of the engines of this model, and if the engine "drinks" up to half a liter of oil per 1000 km, and for the V8 and the entire liter, then it is not necessary to call for a service.

Pledge long and reliable operation Audi engines- timely maintenance. The oil and oil filter on gasoline versions are supposed to be changed every 15 thousand km, on diesel ones - every 10 thousand mileage. Air filter changes every 40 thousand km. Candles in gasoline engines nurse 30 - 60 thousand km. In addition to the above operations, one must not forget about the replacement of antifreeze - every 60 thousand kilometers or every 3 years. In some car services, it is recommended that when replacing the timing belt (according to the instructions, this should be done every 90 thousand km), the water pump should also be changed. Such a measure is not mandatory and the replacement of the pump occurs solely at the request of the owner. After 100 thousand kilometers it comes out "from old age" throttle valve. The block cannot be repaired, only replaced.

Both front-wheel drive and quattro all-wheel drive transmissions are quite reliable. There are no complaints about the operation of a 5- or 6-speed "mechanics", as well as a conventional 5-speed automatic transmission. But from the purchase of adaptive Tiptronic and multitronic variator with the possibility of manual switching, employees of a specialized service station recommend refusing - Tiptronic has a clutch resource of about 160 - 180 thousand km, and Multitronic has had ECU failures.

Suspension and braking system

Differences between A6 monodrive and A6 quattro - in rear suspension. For front-wheel drive, there is a semi-independent beam at the rear, for all-wheel drive - an independent double-lever. Both versions are reliable, but expensive to maintain. Suffice it to say that ball joints change only in assembly with levers (four levers per wheel), and you have to change them, depending on the driving style, every 40 - 80 thousand km. The front shock absorbers "nourish" 80 - 100 thousand km, the rear - 110 - 120 thousand km.
Brake system The Audi A6 is generally reliable. The only drawback is fluid leakage at the attachment points of the rear brake hoses to the calipers. Replacing the front pads is required on average every 30 - 40 thousand km, rear - after 50 - 70 thousand km. The front brake discs can withstand 60 - 80 thousand, the rear - 120 - 140 thousand kilometers.

Summing up

Audi A6 (C5) 1997 - 2004 the car is good but not cheap. Therefore, when buying, it is worth considering not only the price of the car itself, but also the cost of its maintenance and repair. It is also worth remembering that the A6 (however, like other cars of this brand) is demanding on the quality of fuel, oils and needs qualified service. However, in fairness, we note that this is inherent in all business class cars.

Advantages

Excellent resistance to corrosion
+ Rich equipment
+ Wide choice of engines
+ Many offers on the used car market
+ Four-wheel drive quattro (for some modifications)

Flaws

High cost of cars, maintenance and spare parts
- Demanding for timely and quality service
- Engines picky about the quality of oil and fuel
- Increased oil "appetite"

Despite its high reputation, the Audi A6 (C5) has been repeatedly subjected to recalls. For example, in February 2007, a mass service campaign was held in Europe that affected more than 870 thousand cars. Volkswagen Passat, Audi A4, Audi A8, and Audi A6 1997 - 1999 The reason for the recall was rapid wear protective rubber casing of the front axle, which could lead to accelerated wear of some front suspension components and potential damage to the supporting structures.

And in the US, about 74 thousand Volkswagen Passat, Audi A4, and Audi A6 2003 were subject to recall. with V6 engines of 1.8, 2.8 and 3.0 liters. The detected problems were critical in nature, since they can cause a sudden shutdown of the engine due to a defect in the wiring of the fuel system.
