Bavarian derby: Audi Q5 vs BMW X3. Audi Q5 vs BMW X3 – which is better? Driving performance Audi Q5 vs BMW X3

The BMW X3 is the newest representative of the compact premium crossover segment, its sales in Russia began only on November 11th. And in him a lot of questions arose, the answers to which we wanted to get on our roads. And they took another relatively fresh competitor to him - Audi Q5. Both cars - with petrol 249-horsepower engines, automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive.

Boldness or modesty?

Audi was changed to us literally at the last moment - instead of the Sport line, we got the Design Q5 without the S line package. Therefore, Q5, and even in silver metallic looks neutral - many probably do not distinguish it from its predecessor. The BMW, on the other hand, flexes its muscles with the M Sport package - an aggressive body kit, black wheels with blue brake calipers showing through, painted fender flares and M logos on the front fenders make it stand out from the base cars.

A similar story with the interior - in the X3, sports seats are immediately grabbed into the arms, which will certainly remind you of every extra kilogram. But you can’t find fault with the landing, as well as with the finishing materials, although in general there are enough punctures: the glove compartment is too small, the passenger can’t lock or unlock the doors in any way - there are no buttons on the right, like, for example, in the 5th series, you need to pull for the rod. There are not enough places to place small things on the central tunnel. And wireless charging is combined with telephony and a mount in the armrest box and costs 34 thousand rubles. And how long will BMW keep these M-wheels as thick as a sausage loaf?

The Audi Tunnel has a movable wireless charging tray, and the cup holders can be heated and cooled. This, of course, is also available for a fee, but in general, the space in the Q5 is better organized than in the X3. The side support rollers on the seats are placed wider, and the light trim makes the interior visually more spacious. But this is an illusion - there is no more space here.

Electronic tricks

The main thing that stands out from the overall picture is the screen of the MMI Navigation Plus multimedia complex. Not only does it look alien, but by modern standards it is already too small and does not have touch or gesture control. You need to rewind the music track - if you please hold the button. And in general, everything has to be done the old fashioned way, clicking the puck on the tunnel. And if you want to amuse yourself or passengers, you can try to voice the address of the destination in navigation system- Speech recognition doesn't work well, so don't be surprised when "Susanin" sends you to hell. So you can safely refuse a very expensive option - MMI Navigation Plus with a touchpad on the tunnel costs 180 thousand rubles. And the old “all-Volkswagen” story also passed to the Q5 - when the engine is turned off / the ignition is turned off, the buttons on the steering wheel stop working.

Audi interior visually seems more spacious due to the low front panel. For a surcharge, BMW and Audi will install everything your heart desires - powerful audio systems, advanced communication systems, projection screens, driver assistance systems, ventilated seats

The same “crooked” voice input of the address is also in BMW, although the complex itself is much more modern and convenient here. And this is strange - in smartphones, voice control works without any problems. However, the system copes with the rest of the commands normally. And the surcharge for gesture control and navigation Professional with a hard drive and a 9-inch display BMW asks for a much more modest - 76 thousand in total.

Loyalty to tradition

Interestingly, many people confuse X3 with ... X5! So at the car wash they rolled out the maximum tariff for this, although Audi was rated according to the average grid. Of course, we pointed out the mistake, but the administrator had to get out, walk to the back door and make sure that it was really X3. The resemblance to the older model is manifested in movement and this is by no means a compliment - with the same width as the Q5, the X is perceived to be much more cumbersome. Massive A-pillars and small windshield forced to carefully maneuver in the yards littered with snow or in narrow lanes. The Audi is easier to handle and the steering is lighter, which should appeal to women.

Audi doors completely cover the sills, while BMW doors will have to be wiped with pants in case of an inattentive landing.

BMW as a whole is more exciting and emotional - it reacts faster to actions with the steering wheel and gas, and the two-liter turbo engine sounds good and pulls more fun than the engine of the same volume in the Q5. Interestingly, the fuel consumption of the X3 under the same conditions is about a liter and a half less - in the region of 11.5 l / 100 km. And an 8-speed automatic is much more preferable in traffic jams - no matter how Audi fights with the settings of its robots, small twitches and delays are annoying in Moscow traffic. The X3 is also very quiet - the Q5 has more road noise.

And surprisingly, an Audi with optional air suspension is not much more comfortable than a BMW with stiffer M-shock absorbers! Yes, the waves and small things Q5 lays softly, but with sharp irregularities like joints, pits or speed bumps, air springs are not able to cope. X3, on the contrary, will not disregard every crack, but with an increase in speed it “smoothes out” the road, and energy consumption allows you not to stand on ceremony with broken asphalt too much. Of course, adjusted for 20-inch wheels.

Sports seats X3 hint that the driver must be in shape. Q5 is more liberal to the figure. Audi's second-row seats are fore/aft adjustable, but either way the BMW has more legroom. And for the head too. Both crossovers can be equipped with a three-zone climate and heating rear seats. Each has Isofix anchorages for 2 child seats

So our fears that arose in Portugal were only partially confirmed - shaking in the X3 will only strain at city speeds, but you can abandon the M-package with a sports suspension and order smaller wheels. And in Q5, it is hardly worth paying extra for air springs - even in Dynamic mode, the car still remains flabby, and they add a little comfort. The main advantage is the ability to lift the Q5 off-road, but what if it was taken away from her normal four-wheel drive?

In Russia, Q5 is offered only with quattro ultra transmission. Now the Q5 does not have permanent all-wheel drive with a center differential, but a plug-in rear axle. And this is clearly visible and felt - first the front rows. So forget about indulging yourself with drifts on a snow-covered site - here also the ESP does not completely turn off. You can’t say anything about the “beam” xDrive, except for delight. Eh, and who thought of shod both crossovers in non-studded tires for the “euro winter”? They are absolutely helpless in such conditions!

Winter Features

The test successfully coincided with heavy snowfalls in Moscow - of course, we did not get stuck in snowdrifts, despite the modest capabilities of tires that are only suitable for asphalt. All-wheel drive, whatever it may be, is all-wheel drive. But other unpleasant features "crawled out". The BMW collects a lot of snow at the left pillar - a huge dead zone is formed. In the menu, you can activate the automatic activation of the seat and steering wheel heating at the specified minimum temperature. But what programmer thought of including temperature readings in the code ... overboard? As a result, you stop by on the way to the gas station, the interior has long been warmed up, you get into the car, and the system turns everything on again. What for?

sad statistics

Do not faint - prices for the Q5 2.0 TFSI (this is the only engine offered on the Russian market) start at 3,050,000 rubles, and most of the options are essentially useless. But even a reasonable set of equipment will easily increase the price to 3.5 million rubles. The story is similar with BMW - the base 184-horsepower crossover costs 2,950,000 rubles, the 249-horsepower version is available from 3,270,000 rubles, and our car with the M Sport Launch package costs 3,970,000 rubles.

Yes, for this money BMW X3 and Audi Q5 will have everything you need and even more, but for 3.8-4 million you can already buy X5 and Q7! Albeit in basic configurations, but this is a completely different level of comfort and status. Not surprisingly, the Q7 sells almost 30% better than the Q5, and the X5 outperforms the Ha-Third by more than 2 times. Of course, the X3 is just starting its journey, and more affordable cars from Kaliningrad will soon appear. But it seems that the X3 and Q5 will remain in the shadow of older models.

However, this is not relevant to our test, but we can’t say unequivocally which is better - the Audi Q5 or the BMW X3. For active drivers, we definitely recommend BMW with its cool engine and incendiary character. Those who are not too concerned about the transmission, and who are confused by the “tightness” in the cabin and cramped seats of the X3, can pay attention to the Q5 with its “airy” interior, adjustable second row and comfortable trunk. And very soon we are taking another pair from the premium segment - the new Volvo XC60 and Cadillac XT5. Suddenly, one of them will encroach on the title of the best compact crossover!

An article about the Audi Q5 and BMW X3: comparison of technical characteristics, internal content, driving performance, equipment and price tags. At the end of the article - a video of a comparative test drive of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

The content of the article:

The Audi Q5 and BMW X3 are deservedly considered trendsetters in the class of premium mid-size crossovers.

In the fall of 2016, Audi officially introduced the second generation Q5, and six months later BMW company presented the third generation X3, after which the confrontation between the models reached a completely different level.

However, potential buyers, who faced a difficult choice, “suffered” the most. That is why we decided to empirically find out which of the cars deserves the title of leader, and which is destined to be catching up.

The appearance of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3

The change of generations benefited both models - they not only added in external respectability, but also became somewhat larger, as close as possible to the "big brothers" in the face of the BMW X5 and Audi Q7.

The appearance of the X3 is made without any revelations, and its appearance successfully exploits the brand values of the Bavarian brand. On the face of formidable head optics, large "nostrils" of the radiator grille and a monumental bumper with several sections of air intakes and narrow strips of foglights.

The assembled and generally dynamic profile flaunts embossed sidewalls, a long hood, powerful wheel arches and a billowing window line.

The stern of the crossover is decorated with stylish parking lights and a powerful bumper with a pair of "trunks" of the exhaust system.

As already noted, the appearance of the Q5 is made in the style of the Q7, and the similarity is so strong that the first one can easily be mistaken for a smaller copy of the second.

The frowning “muzzle” demonstrates faceted head optics, a stylish hexagonal false radiator grille and a powerful bumper.

The profile shows inflated wheel arches and a sloping roof, while the stern is represented by subtle parking lights and a strict bumper with two disguised exhaust pipes.

The external dimensions of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 are as follows:

SpecificationsBMW X3Audi Q5
Length, mm4716 4663
Width, mm1897 1893
Height, mm1676 1659
Wheel base, mm2820 2819

Both cars offer a wide range of body colors. In addition, for a substantial surcharge, you can paint the car in an exclusive color.

Since judging tastes is a thankless task, let everyone decide for themselves whose appearance from the presented duet impresses him more. We will say that both cars look stylish, dynamic and modern.

Audi Q5 interior design vs. BMW X3

Interior decoration crossovers are made in the style traditional for each of the brands, however, in both cases, the “history” of minimalism and the highest possible ergonomics are beaten in the cabin.

The workplace in Q5 meets the driver with high-quality digital tidy and a stylish multi-function steering wheel. On the central dashboard, the manufacturer placed a stand-alone 8.4 ”media system monitor, under which there is a minimalist microclimate control unit.

The front riders are offered comfortable chairs, while the rear ones have a fairly spacious sofa, where, due to the high transmission tunnel, only two people can sit with maximum comfort.

The BMW X5 flaunts a plump multifunction steering wheel and a spectacular dashboard that can change the graphics depending on the selected driving mode.

In the central part of the dashboard, the manufacturer installed a towering 10.2 ”screen of the multimedia center, and a little lower - a music and microclimate control unit. The central dashboard is traditionally slightly turned towards the “pilot”, which makes the use of the systems located on it more convenient.

Front passengers are offered no less comfortable seats than Audi, but the rear sofa offers a little more space. The rear sofa of the "Bavarian" has three sections, each of which has the ability to adjust the slope, but in the Q5, the user has access to the longitudinal adjustment of the rear sofa.

Trunk volume in a crossover from Ingolstadt is 550-610 liters in a five-seater and 1550 liters in a two-seater cabin layout. At the same time, the volume of the BMW luggage compartment is 550 or 1600 liters, while the Bavarian has it somewhat more spacious and easier to use.

The quality of finishing materials is fully consistent with the status of cars, however, it is worth recognizing that the Audi materials look and feel nobler, and the build quality is not much, but still higher.

On the picture: bmw engine X3

The Audi Q5 in Russia is offered with only one power plant, which is a 2-liter TFSI turbo-petrol engine that generates 249 “horses” and a peak torque of 370 Nm.

It is paired with a 7-speed “robot” and a quattro all-wheel drive system, which allows you to exchange the first hundred in 6.3 seconds. and accelerate to a maximum mark of 237 km / h. Combined fuel consumption is 6.8 l/100 km.

Unlike Audi, the BMW engine range is represented by 4 engines:

  1. 2-liter xDrive20d diesel generating 190 hp With. and 400 Nm of torque, capable of accelerating the crossover from zero to hundreds in 8 seconds. and develop a maximum of 213 km / h. The combined fuel consumption is 5.1 liters.
  2. 3-liter diesel xDrive30d, reproducing 265 hp. With. and maximum 620 Nm of torque. This is enough for the car to overcome the first hundred in 5.8 seconds. and developed peak 240 km / h. "Appetite" in mixed mode is 6 l / 100 km.
  3. 2.0-litre xDrive30i petrol engine producing 249 hp and 350 Nm of thrust. With it, the crossover is able to develop 240 km / h, overcoming the first hundred in 6.3 seconds. The combined consumption is declared at 7.6 liters.
  4. top-end 3-liter 360-horsepower M40i gasoline engine, allowing you to reach 100 km per hour in 4.8 seconds. and develop a maximum speed of 250 km / h, consuming an average of about 8.9 liters for every 100 km of track.
Regardless of the power and type of power plant, it is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system.

Driving performance Audi Q5 vs BMW X3

Fans of fast and aggressive driving will like the BMW X3 more, which gives the driver a feeling of complete control over the road situation.

At the same time, the Audi Q5 has a more measured ride, while the car remains as predictable and stable as possible. However, behind the wheel of an Audi, the driver does not leave the feeling that he does not control the car, but the car controls him.

In terms of off-road capability, the BMW is a step ahead with wide approach/departure angles and a slightly higher ride height of 208mm versus 204mm.

The level of acoustic comfort in the cabin deserves special attention, where the crossover from Ingolstadt becomes the winner.

Conclusion

Both cars have their own unique character and are designed for completely different consumers. Nevertheless, our favorite in this confrontation was the Audi Q5, because this crossover boasts higher-quality finishing materials, better assembly, a quieter interior and a better level of equipment, provided that opponents are the same cost.

Video of a comparative test drive of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5:

It took place at last year's September car show, held in the French capital - Paris. Considering new car, we can say that its creators decided to only slightly refresh the appearance of the crossover, without fundamentally changing its exterior and interior.

From his predecessor updated crossover different front bumpers, slightly modified grille, more modern head optics. Behind the car remained almost the same, except for the nozzles exhaust system different form. As for the interior design, only the new wheel and an extended list of finishes.

It should be noted that the Audi Q5 model first saw the light when other automakers managed to change more than one generation of their crossovers. And even in the premium segment, the competition, if not particularly fierce, was quite felt.

In addition to models and Land Rover Freelander, in the rivals of the first Audi generations Q5 went and Volvo XC60. By the spring of 2012, when the Ingolstadt-based company announced details of the upgraded Q5, the market compact SUVs premium class escalated even more.

Today, the updated Q5 will compete with two cars from Germany - to the already named BMW X3 model, which has recently undergone an update and has become very attractive, it has also been updated at the end of 2012 Mercedes-Benz GLK. In addition, the restyled Land Rover Freelander 2 and Audi's former rival, the Swedish crossover Volvo XC60, will compete for wealthy fans of premium crossovers.

Audi Q5

The main arguments in the fight against their competitors, the authors of the Audi Q5 decided not to change the design of the car, but its technical component. The crossover received other shock absorbers and new springs, the place of the hydraulic power steering was taken by an electromechanical assembly, which, according to the company's engineers, saves 2-3% of fuel.

The crossover will receive upgraded powertrains. So, the three-liter six-cylinder diesel engine has become more powerful by five horsepower, now developing 245 hp, and its torque has increased to 580 Nm. There was also a new three-liter V6 engine equipped with a mechanical supercharger with a capacity of 272 hp. This engine replaced the 3.2-liter unit.

In addition, the car will also receive an economical two-liter diesel engine, which is installed in two variations - 143 and 177 horsepower. At the same time, the creators of the car decided to leave the gasoline two-liter engine 225 hp Depending on the modification of the car, the buyer will be able to choose a six-speed “mechanics”, an eight-speed “automatic” or a seven-speed “robot” S-tronic.

The Q5 also has a hybrid version that combines 211-horsepower Gas engine and a 54-horsepower electric motor.

Main competitor

This crossover from Bavaria has always been the main competitor for Audi engineers and managers. Throughout the production period of the first generation of cars, the BMW X3 has become a true bestseller of mid-size crossovers.

Creating a model in 2012, the authors of the X3 were in a strict framework. First of all, updated BMW should not have questioned the success of its predecessor, remaining in the size range between the new X1 and X5 models. But at the same time, the engines of the novelty should have been distinguished by efficiency and environmental friendliness. Like the restyled Q5, the updated BMW X3 has not changed much in appearance. The car acquired additional solidity, but remained recognizable in the stream.

The car received the main changes in technical terms. A large number of options have appeared here that make up all modern high-tech achievements aimed at improving passenger convenience and handling comfort for the driver.

The body of the BMW X3 has become a little larger, while no major design changes have been observed. The interior decoration meets the restraint traditional for Bavarian cars and perfectly adjusted forms. The ergonomics of the cabin are on top, and the instrument panel, although very concise, after a while the control of the machine seems flawless. It is very important that, despite the increase in options that increase comfort, this crossover is devoid of utilitarian practicality. Such a car is chosen with the heart, not with the head.

The BMW X3 is offered with two engine options. This is a 2-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 184 hp. and a 3-liter gasoline turbo engine with 306 hp. The diesel engine is equipped with a 6-speed mechanical box or 8-speed Steptronic automatic. For gasoline engines, only automatic transmission gears.

Volvo XC60

Safety has always been at the heart of Volvo cars. This fully applies to the Volvo XC60 crossover. Realizing that in the fight against the recognized luminaries of the premium class, the usual qualities of reliability and equipment will not be enough, the creators of the XC60 decided to “gain” points precisely with safety.

Last years in the company Volvo new models are created under the auspices of the revolution in the field of application of tools active safety. True, the forward-collision warning system or adaptive cruise control impressed most buyers as just useful options, and only compact crossover The Volvo XC60, which offered the “City Safety” system in its equipment, made me really perceive Volvo developments in a new way.

This car is built on the C1 Plus platform, the same as the Land Rover Freelander 2, although the Volvo XC60 is 13 cm longer than the “Englishman”, and even off-road, the Swedish crossover does not feel as confident as the Freelander. So, despite the highest ground clearance in the class, equal to 230 mm, the front overhang does not allow the Volvo XC60 to storm climbs with an entry angle exceeding 22 °.

In our country, this car comes with a 2.4-liter diesel engine with 185 hp, as well as a 3-liter T6 gasoline turbo engine developing 285 hp. At the same time, the diesel frankly disappoints with its vibrations, unworthy of a premium crossover. But the petrol unit is good. The only drawback of such a machine is not too quick automatic transmission.

We were ready for the fact that the rivals would be equally strong in all disciplines, but the Audi Q5 unexpectedly took the lead in points. Since the differences between crossovers are largely conceptual, and the final score is ultimately determined by the nuances, it can be stated that Ingolstadt simply made a very well-balanced car. In fact, BMW and Volvo are no worse - they just each promote their own value system. But if the XC60 definitely fascinated - first of all, with its design and interior trim, then the X3 left a slight feeling of annoyance: after all, the Bavarians could have made the car more interesting, fresher. And so this is just a consolidation of the material covered.

Audi Q5
good, and although the new generation had to wait quite a long time, it was worth it: the German crossover was almost devoid of flaws. A well-thought-out interior with a comfortable second row, an intelligent trunk and wide possibilities for its transformation, as well as a perfectly tuned chassis that combines a decent ride and slightly bland, but absolutely logical handling, speak in its favor. And the main disadvantage of the “ku-fifth” is the lack of a choice of power unit: diesel engines are not brought to Russia, and there is only one gasoline engine (not counting the sports version, but that’s another story).

BMW X3
not surprised - and this is just the most amazing quality of the third generation crossover. And yet, against the background of rivals, he does not look pale at all, because the car is, in fact, excellent. In the asset of the "x-third" you can write interesting handling, comfortable lounge with impeccable ergonomics, as well as advanced multimedia system, which has a well-organized interface and rich functionality. I was not very impressed with the trunk, but I was pleased with the opportunity to choose a power unit: different gasoline and diesel engines- for every taste and budget.

Volvo XC60
although he lost on points to Audi, he still deserved the audience award. By and large, this is only a slightly reduced and in some ways even more successful copy of the flagship XC90 crossover with all its high technologies. The main argument in favor of the Swedish car will definitely be the interior: in terms of design and decoration, it has no equal in the class. Versions with air suspension allow you to raise the body to a considerable height, and for some this can play an important role in choosing the “sixties”. In addition, Volvo pleases with a choice power units. Nice car!

Audi Q5

The most affordable "ku-fifth" will cost 3.05 million rubles - this is the price of the basic version with a 2.0 TFSI engine with a capacity of 249 forces, a 7-speed DSG "robot" and all-wheel drive. You can’t call such a car poor, but it still lacks premium gloss. So you have to fork out for options, of which there are a great many. You will not have time to gasp, as the price will increase by half a million; and if you don’t waste time on trifles, then you can easily add one and a half lyama over the base. Actually, the equipment is the only way to expand the fantasy by configuring the Audi: it is not for sale with other Q5 engines in Russia. Unless, of course, you count sports version SQ5 with a 354-horsepower V6 turbo, for which they ask from 4.38 million. The warranty for Q5 is 4 years or 120 thousand km, while there are no mileage restrictions for the first two years. Interservice interval - 15,000 km.

BMW X3

The Bavarian crossover has the richest choice of powertrains. Cheaper than others will cost a 2-liter gasoline turbo engine with a capacity of 184 forces, which is equipped with the xDrive 20i modification - from 2.95 million rubles. Will it be too little? Well, then take a closer look at the more powerful xDrive 30i for 3.27 million: here the 2-liter inline-four already produces 249 forces. There is also a 190-horsepower diesel xDrive 20d of the same volume: 3.04 million - and it's yours. And for 3.6 million you can take a 3-liter turbodiesel xDrive 30d (249 forces): this “X” combines hurricane dynamics and moderate fuel consumption. The top version is the gasoline "almost emka" - X3 M40i with a 360-horsepower turbocharged "six". The warranty for the X3 is limited to two years, but not limited to mileage, and the maintenance interval is 15,000 km.

Volvo XC60

Not all "sixties" are sold in Russia, but the choice, nevertheless, is quite decent: two gasoline and two diesel turbo engines - all with the same volume of 2 liters, but differ in output. The basic version is the gasoline T5 with a 249-horsepower engine - such a “ksenia” will cost 2,925,000 rubles. Diesel D4 (190 hp) is only 70,000 more expensive, but noticeably more economical and also more interesting in terms of taxes. A more powerful diesel D5 (235 forces) is estimated at 3,184,000 rubles. And in the top is the gasoline T6, which is equipped with a 320-horsepower engine with combined supercharging (turbo plus compressor). Curiously, such a car is 99,000 rubles cheaper than the D5, but in terms of taxes, this XC60 will be ruinous. The warranty for Volvo cars is 3 years or 100,000 km, and the service interval is as much as 20,000 km.

Four-wheel drive

All three crossovers are declared as all-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is implemented in different ways. Audi Q5 got new transmission quattro ultra, in which in addition to the clutch package between the gearbox and the cardan shaft there is an additional cam clutch in the rear axle section. When the front wheels slip, all this good is closed, and the torque is sent to the rear axle.

For a BMW with a longitudinal power unit, the transmission of traction to the front axle is controlled by an electronically controlled clutch located in the transfer case. At the same time, in normal driving modes, the torque between the front and rear wheels is distributed in a ratio of 40:60 - therefore, the X3 has a rear-wheel drive behavior. And in the original front-wheel drive Volvo, the Haldex clutch transmits traction to the rear wheels. This is the fifth generation of the multi-plate clutch. It is controlled by electronics, but actuating mechanism hydraulic - the clutch pack is compressed by an annular piston.

Premium crossovers in Russia are becoming more and more popular every year, they are valued for their high level of quality, comfort and versatility. Cars in this segment are perfectly adapted to Russian climatic and road conditions, they are not as bulky as real SUVs and are ideal for both city and off-road driving. These qualities inherent in cars and led to a great demand for them, according to statistics, the share of SUVs (crossovers and SUVs) over the past year accounted for more than 65% of total sales.

Russians have a special love for German car brands, in particular, representatives of the Big Three - Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz - are in great demand. Through years of fierce competition, brands have reached incredible heights in the automotive industry and have long been associated with quality, reliability, comfort and safety. In the Russian market, among the premium cars of the SUV segment, the Bavarian brands Audi and BMW entered the top five best-selling brands. When choosing a premium crossover, many are considering model options of these particular brands, and today we will compare similar and at the same time such different cars Audi Q5 and BMW X3 2019 model year, since both cars have recently appeared in a new light and they can be put on the same level for comparison. At the same time, the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 cars did not receive such an impressive demand as their “big brothers” Q7 and X5, but in general they sell well and are also worthy of attention - these models will be discussed further.

Technical features of the models

With each change of generations of auto models, the degree of confrontation between brands is heating up. Both cars, the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3, are being improved to suit modern requirements, they are perfectly equipped and their technical characteristics are at a high level, corresponding to belonging to a premium car class.

New crossover audi Q5 now being assembled for international export in Mexico at a new car factory, unlike cars previous generation built on the MLB Evo platform with double wishbone front and rear multi-link suspension, and the older Audi models from A4 to Q7 are also based on it. For extra money, sports or air suspensions, shock absorbers with the ability to adjust stiffness in accordance with external conditions appear in the car. Features of the platform used by Audi are the longitudinal placement of the engine and the generous use of aluminum, due to which the weight of the car is reduced by about 100 kg and varies from 1795 to 1955 kg, depending on the modification. Four-wheel drive is implemented through the Quattro Ultra system with two opening clutches, which connects it silently and imperceptibly for the motorist. At the same time, the Quattro all-wheel drive with the Torsen self-locking center differential remained with the three-liter diesel engine.

Like all modern crossovers from the automaker BMW, the X-Third in the back of the G01 is based on the CLAR modular platform with a double-articulated front suspension and a five-link rear. The platform is an automaker's own development and implies a longitudinal arrangement of the motor, as well as a very generous use of high-strength steel and aluminum, which made it possible to reduce the weight of the car by 60-80 kg compared to the previous version of the car model. The new chassis made the BMW X3 crossover even more agile and comfortable, and the stabilizer roll stability and aluminum swivel bearings on the A-pillars provided the car with excellent stability and handling. A complete set with adaptive shock absorbers is also available, adapting to the driving mode and the road. The xDrive all-wheel drive system allows the crossover to move confidently both on paved city streets and on loose surfaces.

Appearance

Whichever crossover you take, Audi Q5 or BMW X3, each of them in the new generation is more like an older brother, both externally and in terms of technical characteristics. Both premium models, despite the decrease in weight, have noticeably gained in size.

So, appearance Audi Q5 is implemented in the spirit of Q7, and in general the features of the car repeat the corporate identity of Audi, which makes the car even more related to other representatives of the automaker's lineup. As you can see, the automaker, in principle, is in no hurry to reshape the exterior design of the car and updates its models very restrainedly. The expressive chrome-plated radiator grille, based in the front of the body of the new Audi Q5 model, is the same as that of its counterparts, while some differences in the appearance of the car are still present. The central stripes are horizontal instead of vertical, as in some other models, in addition, the novelty is equipped with a narrow LED head optics with smooth edges. The lower and side air intakes with integrated fog lamps are well designed, the body is also attractive with numerous reliefs, including the luggage compartment, a line going to the stern, an increased diameter of the wheel arches and long brake lights.

The external transformations of the BMW X3 crossover are also not the most ambitious. Without changing traditions, the models have left their former recognizable features, but now the power and charisma are even more visible in the appearance of the BMW X3. The novelty pleases with a number of embossed additions, in front there are branded large “nostrils” of the radiator grille with decorative chrome trim, as well as a powerful bumper with several sections of air intakes and narrow ones. The updated optics adds rapacity to the car, but the profile has not changed significantly, while the X3 model is distinguished by embossed lines and powerful wheel arches. Became more aggressive appearance the back of the model is a massive bumper, large angular optics and exhaust pipes on both sides, reminiscent of the off-road nature of the crossover. In general, the new BMW X3 is in line with modern trends and looks very good, the car in the M-body kit looks especially attractive.

Both competitors, the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 offer a wide range of body colors, and for an additional fee, the car can be painted in a unique color.

Salon and trunk

The interior design of the car is made in the traditional style of each of the brands without too much pathos, but at a fairly high level, corresponding to the class of cars. In terms of functional interior equipment, both options are equipped with a very worthy and offer a wide range of options.

The updated model of the Audi Q5 crossover inside, at first glance, looks too simple, but upon further examination it is noticeable how all the elements are thought out. In fact, Audi implemented high quality materials used in interior design and convenient placement of necessary functions. Auto systems are controlled via a touch screen on the front panel. Comfortable trips are provided, including lateral support with the option of adjusting the position of the front seats, heating and ventilation. The passengers of the car on the back sofa will not get bored either, they have the ability to adjust the microclimate and use multimedia - the monitors are integrated into the headrests. Longitudinal adjustment also available rear seats. Their transformation allows you to increase the volume of the luggage compartment of the Audi Q5 crossover from 550 to 1550 liters, which is very convenient for transporting bulky goods.

The interior of the stylish BMW X3 is also on top. The interior of the novelty is quite spacious and comfortable, although it is not replete with luxury and gloss, it is made of high-quality finishing materials to maintain the premium class level of the model. The driver's interaction with the vehicle controls is well thought out, fits perfectly into the overall surroundings and the new BMW iDrive infotainment environment. The only thing that is by no means impressive is the lack of basic configuration Apple CarPlay system, which is implemented by default in many models of cars of this class.

The BMW crossover offers just as much comfort as the Audi, while providing a bit more room for second-row passengers. The rear sofa consists of three sections with the ability to adjust each inclination. The volume of the luggage compartment of the BMW X3 with the seats folded is 1600 liters - impressively, as for a crossover, with the seats up it will drop to 550 liters, which is still a lot. In general, when compared with the trunk of an Audi Q5, the difference is negligible.

Engines and transmissions

Car engines with new generation models have become more powerful. If we compare the units installed on the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 crossovers, then only BMW can boast of a variety of available options for the Russian market, in the case of Audi you don’t have to choose.

The Q5 mid-size crossover is offered in Russia with only one installation - a 2-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 249 horses (peak torque is 370 Nm), paired with a 7-speed robotic gearbox and all-wheel drive that redistributes traction to the rear axle using a controlled multi-plate clutch.

In other markets Audi car Q5 is presented in a greater variety of modifications with several turbodiesels and more powerful gasoline engine. In such trim levels, an 8-speed automatic transmission is also available in pair with the engines, and all-wheel drive is complemented by a Torsen clutch.

Unlike Audi, the updated Bavarian crossover BMW X3 offers a diverse range of engines, consisting of gasoline and diesel engines.

Petrol engines:

The sports M-modification of the premium crossover is distinguished not only by the most powerful engine, but also by adaptive dampers, as well as a more active suspension.

Dynamics and fuel consumption

Cars of the new generation have become not only more powerful, but also more dynamic than previous models. Both the premium crossovers, the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3, demonstrate excellent dynamics, corresponding to the frisky character of the bolivars.

The Audi Q5 car with a two-liter engine, supplemented by two turbochargers, accelerates to hundreds in 6.3 seconds and reaches speeds of up to 250 km / h (in conditions of forced restriction). Gasoline consumption in the combined cycle is 6.8 liters.

Acceleration dynamics to 100 km / h for a BMW X3 with gasoline installations from 8.3 to 4.8 seconds, car engines consume much more fuel, an average of 10 liters in a mixed rhythm, but taking into account the power of the engines, such consumption is acceptable. All BMW X3 units provide a switchable autostart and stop option to save fuel when the engine is running on Idling. Diesel engines accelerate the crossover to hundreds from 8 to 4.9 seconds and consume an average of 6 liters of fuel.

Handling and maneuverability

The noble Audi Q5 crossover demonstrates a well-balanced driving performance and stable behavior on the road, while still suggesting a more measured ride, while the BMW X3 is significantly faster than the competitor and is quite suitable for aggressive driving enthusiasts, providing a complete feeling of control on the road.

The off-road characteristics of both models do not imply serious off-road driving, urban crossovers are not intended for taking mud baths in principle, and it is unlikely that the owner of such a car will dare to knead the mud at all, or even more so to overcome the fords, having unfastened more than three million rubles for the car. At the same time, the BMW concern allows the X-third to go off-road, prudently leaving him a good ground clearance at 208 mm, moreover, the automaker claims that this is one of the privileges of the updated model.

The Audi Q5 has a ground clearance of 204 mm, while other off-road characteristics are more modest. Comparing the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 models, we also note that the premium crossover from Ingolstadt clearly outperforms its rival in terms of acoustic comfort.
