Due to this, the combustion chambers will be reduced, which means that the compression ratio will increase, which, in turn, will lead to a significant reduction in fuel consumption.

Do not be too zealous, because practice has shown that grinding more than 2.5 mm leads to breakage of the head mounting studs, the explosion becomes so strong. The standard compression ratio is 7.4, while after grinding it rises to 9. this is a critical value, exceeding which will damage the engine, possibly even burning the pistons.

  • After grinding, the use of 92nd gasoline is mandatory, which means that it is necessary to replace piston rings for higher quality ones. In addition, there will be an increase temperature regime work, so you need to think about forced cooling.
  • Some craftsmen bore cylinders for a piston of 79 mm, from 2106, therefore, the volume increases to 1.3 liters. The power in this case increases up to 60 Horse power.
  • It is advisable to dilute the exhaust system by 2 exhaust pipes, which will allow you to fine-tune the operation of the engine. Since the ventilation of the cylinders will be significantly improved

The advantages of LuAZ have been known for a long time: the minimum weight, the original torsion bar suspension and wheel gears provide decent ground clearance and, as a result, excellent cross-country ability both in deep ruts and in the swamp. But there are plenty of downsides, too. weak motor, the general fragility of the transmission, unable to "digest" wheels of a larger dimension, as well as incorrect weight distribution, due to which the LuAZ lifts its rear "legs" on steep slopes, leaning on the ground with the ski of the front protection. In general, with such initial data in the jeep trial, there is nothing to hope for, therefore the well-known Gomel racer Andrey Koshchenko decided to change everything that did not suit him in LuAZ.

Refinement was carried out on all fronts, so not a single one was left without attention. weakness. One of the first items in the refinement program was wheel gears. So standard tires and under normal operating conditions, they do quite well, but if we are talking about sports and "evil" rubber of a larger dimension, the gearbox simply cannot withstand the loads. We need a reinforced one - and Andrey found one, and, as it turned out, Belarusian craftsmen make it, although it would seem that LuAZ is a rather rare bird in our area.

The standard LuAZ engine also did not suit Andrei, and in all respects: firstly, low-power, secondly, unreliable, and thirdly, it lies outside the wheelbase, in front of the front axle. In principle, it would be possible to simply replace the motor with another one, as many do, but for Andrey the issue of weight distribution was also far from the last, because the car was being prepared for the jeep trial as well. Yes, and a standard box would hardly have coped with a more powerful engine, so during the "swap" it was decided to convert LuAZ from a front-engine to a central engine.

The new engine, and it was a 1.6-liter diesel VW (cheap and reliable), was shifted back within the wheelbase - so much so that now there is just a lot of free space under the hood. But in the cabin it became somewhat smaller - I had to "give way" to the power unit.

Since the "native" box is no longer suitable for such a scheme, Andrey also changed the transmission scheme: instead of a constant leading front axle and a hard-wired rear axle, Crazy Frog now has a permanent four-wheel drive with center lock. The diesel engine is docked with the Zhiguli gearbox, and the gearbox transmits the moment through the cardan to the Nivovsky "razdatka".

"But how is it done? front-wheel drive, after all, in LuAZ, the gearbox is also a front differential?" - the attentive reader will ask. And it is made to ingeniously simple: it is installed in front ... a rear differential from the same LuAZ, with a factory forced lock. That is, now both in front and in the center, and there are forced locks at the back, just like the Gelika!

The second cardinal change is the lengthening of the wheelbase. To reduce the front overhang and again ensure perfect weight distribution, the front axle was moved forward by about 100 mm. If you look from below, you can see where the standard attachment points were and where the axle "left" during the alteration.

In addition to the transfer of the front axle, Andrey also lengthened the levers - he welded in special "inserts" so that tires of a larger dimension 215/90 R15 could be installed. Theoretically, a longer lever should also increase wheel travel, but it was not possible to realize the potential of this idea by 100% - the travel has increased, but now they are limited by the axle shaft.

“In a good way, it was necessary to take the front gearbox a little back so that the axle shafts did not look strictly to the sides, but a little forward and would go parallel with the levers. But this “puncture” became clear after assembling the car, during the tests. It turns out to do everything is as it should be, you need to take the engine back a little more, cook new cardan shafts ...
