All about nissan patrol y61. Should I buy a used Nissan Patrol Y61 series? Off-road benefits

Cars are different. Some model can be safely called ordinary, the other is considered worthy. But there are cars that are considered legendary. Nissan Patrol is one of them. Initially created for the needs of the army, the Patrol U61 SUV won the hearts of off-road lovers around the world. Patrol is the official vehicle of the UN, it is used to travel to the most dangerous and difficult places.

Patrol U61 is the name of the fifth generation, which is no longer in production, in 2010 it was replaced by the sixth generation. But finding a car is not so difficult, and the price of a supported version is much lower than the sixth generation Patrol. The article will discuss the features of all-wheel drive, power plants and operation in difficult conditions.

The main dimensions of the car
Length 5045 mm
Height 1855 mm
Width 1940 mm
Clearance (ground clearance) 220 mm
Wheelbase 2970 mm
rear track 1625 mm
front track 1605 mm
Luggage compartment volume from 183 to 2287 liters
Basic tires 275/65R17
Full mass from 2920 to 3200 kg, depending on the configuration

Appearance and interior

Photos will tell more about the appearance of the car. The body does not differ in brutal appearance, but at the same time it looks reliable and unshakable. And this is true - the body is made of a thick layer of metal, which is why the mass of the car reaches 3 tons. On the one hand, this makes it stable, and on the other hand, it negatively affects fuel economy.

Inside, everything is also simple and practical. There are no bells and whistles here, but the driver feels confident behind the wheel. And passengers usually do not complain. The only minus of the car interior (except for the decoration that is simple by modern standards) is the interior mirror.

Body Features

Nissan has tried to make the car as "indestructible" as possible. The body practically does not rust. After examining a car with ten years of experience, the experts found corrosion only in places of deep chips. But if the driver decides to buy a car from an off-road fan, then the body should be carefully examined, since the time spent in the swamps has a bad effect on the rapids and wheel arches.

It is necessary to carefully examine the frame, especially its rear part, since corrosion appears first of all there. The body is made of a thick layer of metal, so the resource is quite large. But it will be great if, after the purchase, the owner will process the “weak” points of the design.

Specifications

It is worth talking about iron separately, but for now we suggest studying the engines. For all the time, many options have been released, but we are considering those engines that can be easily found in the CIS countries. It is worth saying that in the Russian market of used cars, the right-hand drive Patrol is a frequent guest.

And if possible, it is better to choose just such a version of the "Japanese". The right-hand drive SUV will have a Safari badge, which is appreciated among off-road enthusiasts. In general, such versions have a richer finish and content. The electronics settings are slightly different from the European versions of the Nissan Patrol. For example, in the root model you can find a 4.2-liter diesel unit, issuing 160 horses.

Base diesel engine 2.8 TD

The 2.8-liter engine, like other fifth-generation Nissan diesel options, is turbocharged. The design includes six cylinders, which have an in-line arrangement. The power of the turbodiesel is 129 horsepower, bursting out from under the hood at 2000 rpm. Torque peaks at 252 H*m at 4000 rpm. The motor works only with 5-speed mechanics. The engine has the following dynamics and economy indicators:

  • The power plant accelerates Patrol from 0 km/h to 100 km/h in 18.4 seconds.
  • The speed limit is 155 km/h.
  • In the town base engine eats about 15 liters, on the track - 9.5. Mixed mode - 11 liters.

Diesel 3.0TD

The volume is 2953 cm3. The location here is also in-line, only there are already 4 cylinders, not 6. When choosing a medium diesel engine, it can be equipped with either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. Power is 158 horses at 2000 rpm. The maximum torque is 380 H * m, which appears at 2000 rpm. The performance of a 3-liter diesel engine is as follows:

  • Acceleration from 0 km/h to 100 km/h takes 15.4 seconds with mechanical box or 16.9 with an automatic.
  • Maximum speed - 160 km / h.
  • Consumption in the city is 14.3 liters with mechanics, the machine will reduce the figure to 13.9. On the highway, the car consumes 8.8 liters with a manual transmission or 8.6 with an automatic transmission. Mixed mode for both options requires about 10 liters.

Diesel flagship 3.0 TD

The top diesel has become the "favorite" of Russian offroaders.

The most expensive turbodiesel has an in-line arrangement of four cylinders. The choice of boxes is exactly the same as in the previous motor: 5MKP or 4AKP. The maximum power is 160 horsepower, which becomes available at 3600. Torque peaks at 380 H * m. The flagship received the following indicators:

  • Acceleration 0-100 km / h takes 15.2 seconds with a manual transmission or 16.3 with an automatic transmission.
  • The speed limit is 160 km/h.
  • Fuel consumption in the city should not exceed 14.3 liters with mechanics and 13.9 liters. with an automatic. On the highway, the car consumes 8.8 liters with manual transmission and 9 with automatic transmission. Average consumption is equal to 12 liters.

4.8 petrol engine

The only gasoline engine has an in-line arrangement of six cylinders. Only a 5-speed automatic is available for it. Power is 245 horsepower at 3600 rpm. Peak torque is 400 N*m at 3600 rpm. The engine "feeds" on the 95th gasoline. The most powerful option boasts the following indicators:

  • Acceleration time to hundreds lasts 11.7 s.
  • The speed limit is 180 km/h.
  • In the city, a car equipped gasoline engine, requires 19.6 liters per hundred. On the highway, fuel consumption drops only per liter - 18.1.

Nissan Patrol features - testers notes

Now we know what can be inside the SUV. The final puzzle is the car's ability on the road. Feedback from ordinary motorists and serious testers helps to see the big picture. If the SUV "rolls" on the asphalt, then only rear drive. And this is convenient, because fuel consumption drops, the ride becomes more comfortable, and driving a rear-wheel drive car is much easier. But if the driver gets off-road, then in his arsenal appear: a rear differential lock, low gears and four-wheel drive.

Once in extreme situation, the owner of the machine can even disable rear stabilizer. This element looks like a shock absorber. In normal mode, the rear stabilizer is locked. In this position, the wheels are hung out earlier, as a result, there is less roll. But on a real offroad, the element becomes redundant, so the driver can disable it with one button on dashboard. After that, the electromagnet will release the stem. As a result, each Nissan Patrol wheel will receive 70 millimeters of free play. The symbiosis of these functions and a reliable body provide excellent cross-country ability to the car.

Returning to the stabilizer, it is worth warning that it should be turned off only in serious situations, since the wear of the part occurs quite quickly. Replacement will cost almost a thousand dollars. The rest of the parts that form the four-wheel drive are of high strength. True, the hub couplings of the front wheelset may be an exception. Here the situation is the same as with the stabilizer - they work in automatic and manual mode. So that the couplings do not cause trouble, they need to be monitored and serviced in time. This includes disassembly and lubrication of the hubs and steering knuckles. These procedures are performed every 40-60 thousand kilometers. In general, the car has no problems with off-road: an excellent all-wheel drive system, a strong body and a powerful power plant.

Patrol can be called unique because of the suspension, which is dependent on both front and rear. But this highlight has a positive effect on the reliability of the “running” both on a flat surface and offroad. The car turned out to be quite economical when compared with other SUVs. For example, bushings and stabilizer struts change only after 50-60 thousand km. With the steering of the car, too, everything is fine - with increasing speed, the effort on the "steering wheel" also increases. As the experience of Russian owners of Nissan Patron shows, steering parts are no less durable than the body.

Eventually

The brakes may seem a little too hard for some, but for an SUV, this is a plus, not a minus. With frequent use of the car on the road, replacement of the pads may be needed after 20 thousand mileage. If only the disc is worn out, you can grind it yourself and return it to operation.

You can buy a car for 1.5-2 million rubles, depending on the configuration and power stop.

Nissan Patrol (1997–2010 onwards). As a result of restyling in the fall of 2004, bumpers and fog lights were updated, the radiator grille changed slightly and became more massive.

AT model line Nissan's off-road Patrol appeared back in 1951. And for almost 60 years, the principle of its design has remained unchanged: a powerful spar frame, dependent wheel suspensions, a rigidly connected front axle and a reduction gear. The model has proven itself to be reliable and unpretentious - they say, "Patrol" is easier to sell than to torture "to death". Therefore, a simple and horse-drawn Patrol from the third generation has been widely used by UN peacekeepers and in expeditionary support around the world. And machines of the fourth and fifth generations were used as the main vehicle in the Irish army. Moreover, from the third generation (1980–1994), the Nissan Patrol began to be produced in a five-door body, and its production, in addition to Japan, was established in Spain. On the fourth "Patrol", which started in 1987, springs appeared in the suspension instead of springs, and the model became known as the Patrol GR (Grand Raid).

In the fall of 1997, the fifth generation Patrol (Y61) debuted. Its design remained the same, and the main know-how was the “switchable” rear stabilizer roll stability, which reduced body roll in corners and increased suspension travel off-road. In 2002 and 2004, the Nissan Patrol was restyled. And in 2010, sales of the sixth generation model with the Y62 index started, which is still in production.

Equipment

In our market, there are mainly dealer Nissan Patrols, which were offered only in a five-door body. There are specimens from Europe, Africa and the United Arab Emirates, the main disadvantage of which is poor corrosion protection. Officially, Patrol was delivered to us in expensive trim levels Luxury and Elegance.

The initial version of Luxury had ABS, electric windows and heated side mirrors, front and side airbags, alloy wheels(since 2004), climate control for the front and rear of the cabin. The armchairs are trimmed with velor, and the panels are trimmed with woodgrain inserts, but the gearshift and transmission control levers are made of genuine leather.

The Elegance variant was complemented by power front seats, a sunroof, fog lights, cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel and a six-disc CD changer. The interior was decorated with natural wood and leather seats.

Patrol's all-wheel drive transmission operates in three modes: rear-wheel drive (2H), used on hard surfaces, all-wheel drive with a rigid connection of the front axle (4H), used on off-road or slippery road, all-wheel drive with low gear engaged (4Lo). In addition to the “lowering”, you can forcibly block rear axle(option).

Engine

In the Patrol Y61 engine range, at first only in-line “sixes” were used: diesel engines with a volume of 2.8 liters (129 hp) and 4.2 liters (125 and 145 hp), as well as gasoline 4.5 liters (200 hp). Since 2000, the R6 2.8 turbodiesel has replaced the 3.0-liter 4-cylinder (158 hp), and since 2004 the gasoline engine has grown to 4.8 liters (245 hp). We sold Patrol with R6 2.8 liter and R4 3.0 liter turbodiesels, and after restyling in 2004, a 4.8 liter gasoline “six” was added.

A six-cylinder turbodiesel is prone to overheating, which is why its long aluminum block head (repair - from 35,000 rubles) is deformed and cracked. Seals leak over time crankshaft, the EGR valve is clogged. But fuel pump high pressure withstands up to 300 thousand km. Its repair will cost from 25,000 rubles. A new node costs from 130,000 rubles. A turbocharger (32,800 rubles) with caring owners “lives” up to 400 thousand km. But it is advisable to change the timing belt one and a half times more often than the prescribed regulations of 90 thousand km.

At the same mass Nissan engine Patrol - 3-liter "four" ZD30DDTI - in the gas distribution mechanism drive there is a strong and durable chain that does not require attention up to 200 thousand km. As a rule, the injection pump (from 125,000 rubles) and injection nozzles (5,300 rubles each) serve the same amount, and the turbocharger (from 50,000 rubles) lasts even longer. About 80 thousand km were released to the drive belt tensioner (from 6500 rubles). Pistons burned out on many engines from the first batch. This was due to design miscalculations in their lubrication and cooling system (special nozzles supplied oil to the piston bottoms). On this occasion, there was even a revocable action, and the motors were changed under warranty. The problem was completely solved only after 2005. At the same time, sensors became more durable. mass flow air (from 4500 rubles), which had previously been a headache for Patrol owners.

The inline 4.2-liter "six" is a legendary engine. He nurses up to 600 thousand km, and this is not the limit. Perhaps and weaknesses he doesn't have it at all. Even in the timing drive - a set of gears, the so-called guitar. A turbocharger (from 50,000 rubles), as a rule, dies along with the engine. Only here in the secondary market it is difficult to find a modification with such a unit - usually these are cars from Arab countries.

Gasoline R6s are also reliable, but voracious. And the power of a 4.5-liter is not always enough.

Transmission

Mechanical 5-speed gearboxes, depending on the engine paired with them, have a different service life. With in-line 6-cylinder turbodiesel overhaul MCP (from 20,000 rubles) will be required closer to 300 thousand km. The “mechanics”, aggregated with a 3-liter turbodiesel, proved to be more durable. Its repair (23,000–35,000 rubles) may be needed for 400 thousand km. But the “manual” box combined with a 4.2-liter diesel engine, as a rule, will be asked to rest along with the engine, and far beyond half a million km.

With all turbodiesels, the clutch unit (12,000–15,000 rubles) lasts the same long time - guaranteed 150 thousand km, and often more. When replacing it for the second time, pay attention to the flywheel (from 11,000 rubles). If there are scuffs and cracks, it is advisable to update it, otherwise after a couple of tens of thousands of km you will still have to change it and pay twice for the same work.

A quad "automatic" was offered as an option with any of the diesels, and on petrol modifications Patrol, it was installed as standard (since 2004 - a 5-speed automatic transmission). It is also durable and can withstand 300 thousand km before repair (from 40,000 rubles). But frequent off-road driving kills it sooner.

In order for automatic transmissions to live safely to a ripe old age, which is about 300–320 thousand kilometers, it is recommended to change the oil in them (from 8,000 rubles) every 90 thousand km. And after active participation in off-road raids, it is advisable to conduct a complete revision of the automatic transmission.

And after active participation in off-road raids, it is advisable to conduct a complete revision of the automatic transmission.

And if you drive constantly in 4x4 mode, the chain (from 15,000 rubles) is quickly pulled out in the transfer case. It is also necessary to follow the semi-automatic clutches that connect the front axle shafts. Firstly, it is necessary to change the lubricant in them at each MOT, and secondly, on off-road couplings (20,000 rubles each) are “turned on” manually, otherwise they will collapse by 100 thousand km. Moreover, the steering knuckles of the front axle and splines are also lubricated in the transmission cardan shafts. Otherwise, before the deadline - 200 thousand km - it will be necessary to update the universal joints (40,000 rubles) and the bearings of the gearbox shanks.

Chassis and body

In the dependent suspension of the Nissan Patrol, there is nothing special to break. Even the stabilizer struts and bushings (from 3,000 rubles per circle) are enough for 50–60 thousand km. Shock absorbers (front - 4200 rubles each, rear - 2900 rubles each) can withstand up to 120-150 thousand km. But frequent off-road rides reduce the service life of these parts by one and a half to two times. In addition, the bar itself (6500 rubles) of the stabilizer wears out quickly from sand and dirt, and the springs also burst (5800 rubles each). After 100 thousand km, silent blocks of levers “die” (500 rubles each). Moreover, the Panhard rod (from 5000 rubles) changes only as an assembly - its elastic bands with hinges are not sold separately. A switchable rear stabilizer deserves a lot of criticism, in which the left telescopic strut quickly breaks (about 25,000 rubles) or its servo drive mopes (20,000 rubles). Therefore, as a rule, it is not changed, but completely removed. After all, the stabilizer does not give any special advantages on off-road and on the track over a conventional adjustable stabilizer.

In steering, by 120-130 thousand km, the rods (5900 rubles each) and their tips (2300 rubles each) wear out. But the worm gearbox itself flows only closer to 300 thousand km. Its bulkhead will cost 10,000 rubles.

The Patrol body is not highly corrosion resistant - on early cars, pitting rust is already creeping out on the fifth door, sills, fenders and rear wheel arches. And even on the frame. The hood hinges turn sour - they need to be lubricated periodically, but to get to them, you have to remove the panel in front of the windshield. And chrome parts begin to “bloom” already on three or four-year-old specimens.

After a few years of Russian operation, the telescopic antenna turns sour (7500 rubles). The motors of brush headlight cleaners (4500 rubles), as well as connectors and wiring connections, are also quickly surrendered - it is poorly protected from dirt and moisture.

Modifications

The three-door version of the Nissan Patrol was not officially delivered to Russia. And those rare specimens that are presented on our market, as a rule, were brought from Europe. Meanwhile, in comparison with the five-door, the short car has better geometric cross-country ability due to the smaller wheelbase, for which it is appreciated by avid "jeepers". Therefore, if you have a burning desire to purchase this particular option, it is advisable to order it in the Old World, where there are quite a lot of such modifications. And most importantly, most of them are in good condition.

The publication

Externally Nissan Patrol 1998 model year stood out with powerful square fangs on the front bumper and brushed headlight wipers. Officially, the car was sold in Russia with a diesel “six” with a volume of 2.8 liters (129 hp), which combined both mechanical and automatic boxes gears.

The Nissan Patrol is, without a doubt, a real master of the off-road. And even the current fashion for "SUVs", which behave better on the pavement than in the mud, could not change its "character". This SUV is made exactly according to the “classics” - a spar frame, dependent long-stroke suspensions, a transfer case with a demultiplier. These cars are rare.

The latest generation Patrol with the Y61 index, which appeared on the market in 1997, is much more focused on comfort than its predecessors. Why the interior of the car is made quite spacious, and its equipment includes a large number of various "bells and whistles". Moreover, most often the cars presented on the secondary market have the richest configurations (in Russia, for example, simple Patrols were not sold at all).

Surprisingly, almost all mechanics involved in Nissan SUVs have nothing against the Patrol Y61 brought from the Middle East: they do not have the traditional bad features in such cases, their equipment is always very rich, and the technical condition is usually pretty good. By the way, there is no need to be particularly afraid of off-road vehicles that have gone through one or another refinement aimed at improving their off-road capabilities.

A significant part of the Nissan Patrol Y61 is under the hood diesel engines. And there are several of them. At first, the car was equipped with a 2.8-liter 6-cylinder turbocharged engine developing 129 hp. or 135 hp (for Japanese market). In addition, there is a 4.2 L diesel (145 hp or 160 hp), but this is usually found on vehicles originally intended for the Middle East or Japan. There is also a third motor powered by diesel fuel, which appeared in 1999. Its volume is 3.0 liters, and the power is 158 hp.

The range of gasoline units is just limited. This is either a 4.5-liter 6-cylinder engine with 200 hp or a 4.8-liter engine producing 245 hp. Moreover, cars with the latest power unit are officially delivered to Russia. The main disadvantage of gasoline engines is fuel consumption, which even for an economical driver is 20 liters per 100 km of city driving (and if you drive more or less quickly, then all 25-30 liters). But for this they pay with decent dynamics, which diesels cannot provide (with a 245-horsepower engine, the maximum speed of the Patrol is 190 km / h, and the acceleration time to “hundreds” takes 10.9 s - for such a large SUV, these are quite good indicators ). As for the reliability of gasoline engines, these 6-cylinder engines, with timely maintenance and use of decent fuel, do not seem to break down at all.

Here is a resource!
Among diesel engines, the 4.2-liter unit is rightfully considered the best. It is characterized by a considerable consumption of diesel fuel (the same 20-25 liters as that of gasoline engines) and a huge resource - it is able to serve over 500 thousand km. Moreover, if you follow the manufacturer's recommendations, change the oil in time and let the engine run for a couple of minutes after stopping, the turbine will also be able to overcome the half-million mark! In addition, the 4.2-liter diesel engine, which has earned fame back in previous generation Patrol, is distinguished by good maintainability, easily “digests” medium-quality diesel fuel and, in addition, does not have a timing belt (the drive is geared there and does not require maintenance). In general, the Patrol Y61 with a 4.2-liter diesel engine (internal designation TD42T) is a great option to buy. At the same time, it must be remembered that the reverse side of amazing reliability will be mediocre dynamics.

Although cars with a 2.8-liter diesel engine will seem even more “sluggish”. This motor, by the way, is criticized not only for the lack of horsepower, but also for its mediocre reliability compared to a 4.2-liter diesel engine and expensive spare parts. So, sometimes after a run of 150-200 thousand km, here you need to change the turbine, which costs $1000. It happens that the cylinder head gasket burns out, it happens that the “head” itself warps from overheating (in the latter case, sometimes it cannot be polished and you have to buy a new one). A 2.8-liter diesel engine is more demanding on fuel quality than its 4.2-liter "big brother", and the need to replace injectors is not uncommon here. In addition, there have been cases of failure of an expensive high-pressure fuel pump (TNVD), the repair of which costs more than $ 1,000. Another not the best feature of a 2.8-liter diesel engine can be considered the presence of a timing belt, which, together with two rollers in Russian conditions, is best changed every 60 thousand km ($ 250 with work).

The 3-liter diesel looks clearly better than the 2.8-liter. It is not only more powerful, but also more reliable. For example, in the gas distribution mechanism, an “eternal” chain is already used here, and the high-pressure fuel pump is much more reliable. Although there is one unpleasant feature - if the high-pressure fuel pump of a 2.8-liter unit can be repaired, then this will not work on a 3.0-liter engine. And a new high-pressure fuel pump costs, by the way, $5000-6000! However, a 3-liter diesel engine, like all Patrol engines, including a 2.8-liter one, is very reliable and rarely breaks down.

Gearboxes to match the engines - cases of their repair are rare. True, at maintenance KP masters sometimes have to tinker. For example, it is quite difficult to pour oil into the “machine”, for which you need to spend several hours, which negatively affects the cost of work. Yes, and replacing the clutch, especially with a 3-liter diesel engine, is not a cheap pleasure ( non-original spare parts cost $200-250 and the same amount of work).

Just don't spare the lubricant
When driving on asphalt, the Nissan Patrol Y61 only has rear-wheel drive. However, off-road, the driver can connect the front axle, lock the rear differential, “cut in” downshift and, most interestingly, turn off the rear stabilizer. It is a small shock absorber, which in the normal position is blocked by a special electromagnetic latch and does not affect the operation of the stabilizer (and it, in turn, reduces roll in corners and has a positive effect on handling). But off-road, the stabilizer already interferes - the wheel begins to hang out earlier. In this case, the driver of the Nissan Patrol just needs to press the button in the cabin - and the electromagnet will release the cylinder rod, allowing it to move freely up and down. Thus, the wheel has an additional free play of 70 mm! All this provides Patrol with amazing cross-country ability. The switchable stabilizer proved to be a fairly reliable element, but if the car used to drive off-road often, it may already be worn out. And the replacement of the stabilizer will cost almost $1000!

As for the reliability of the all-wheel drive system, it is at a very high level. The only part that fails from time to time is the front wheel hub couplings, which the Patrol can operate in both “manual” and automatic modes. If the driver does not follow them, they will turn sour. The hubs must be disassembled and re-lubricated every 40-60 thousand km - by the way, the same applies to the steering knuckles in the front axle (all this work will cost $ 150-200). The remaining elements of the all-wheel drive transmission break down extremely rarely, but when buying a car, it is necessary to check the operation of the transfer case, locks, etc.

Both suspensions on the Nissan Patrol are dependent (by the way, the rarest case in modern automotive industry). However, it is largely due to this that the reliability of the chassis is so high. And not only when driving on smooth asphalt, but also when operating the car on the road. Only the stabilizer struts and bushings may require replacement after 60 thousand km, and even then these parts are not too expensive. The steering also breaks very rarely (sometimes, however, after 100 thousand km, you need to install new tips or even the rods themselves - $ 70-100 in the first case and $ 200-300 in the second). brake pads have good resource, but sometimes they need to be changed after 15-20 thousand km, and in some cases even together with warped disks. A set of pads costs $70-100, and a disc is $70 apiece. Although if the disk is slightly damaged, it can be pierced and put back on the machine.

Those who want to buy a Nissan Patrol should know that this car is not quite suitable for frequent trips on the highway and the city. It's tough and hard to handle high speeds, and the buildup of the body is quite noticeable. But for those who constantly travel to nature Patrol - perfect option. After all, this is a real uncompromising SUV, capable of overcoming the most difficult sections.

EXCURSION
Nissan has great experience in the creation of SUVs. For the first time, a Japanese manufacturer began assembling such cars immediately after the last salvos of World War II died down: in 1946, Nissan began to produce a copy of the famous Willys at its facilities. And in 1951, the Japanese had already made their own changes to it and equipped it not with a 4, but with a 6-cylinder engine producing 85 hp. (at first, the "Nissan" Willys had 60 hp). Exactly last car and received the name Nissan Patrol.

In 1960, Nissan released the Patrol of the so-called 60 series, which looks like american SUV and having a similar design. True, under the hood of the Patrol 60 series there was already a 4.0-liter diesel 6-cylinder engine with a capacity of 125 hp. or 135 hp This Patrol was made for quite a long time in a variety of options, including extended 8-seater cars.

Fundamentally new nissan Patrol series 160 appeared on the market only in 1979. It became much more comfortable than its predecessors and was equipped with good gasoline and diesel engines. In 1983, the Patrol appeared under the index 260, which is an improved modification of the Patrol 160.

In 1987, the Japanese showed a further development of the theme of serious SUVs - the Y60 series car (on sale since 1988). Nissan Patrol has already received a spring suspension, although some modifications still remained spring. A 4.2-liter V6 gasoline engine was installed under the hood of the SUV, producing 160 hp, as well as 2.8-liter (115 hp) and 4.2-liter diesel engines (124 hp or 145 hp). With.).

The Nissan Patrol Y60 has proven to be very reliable car With great opportunities for off-road driving. All these qualities were retained by the Nissan Patrol Y61 shown in 1997, often called the “second GR” (the Patrol Y60 was also designated as the Grand Raid). The car has become much more comfortable and has received a richly trimmed interior. However, at the same time, Patrol retained a frame structure with dependent suspensions. And in addition to the usual “bells and whistles” for such an SUV, the Patrol Y61 was equipped with a unique switchable rear stabilizer, thanks to which its cross-country ability has noticeably increased.

In 2004 took place restyling Patrol- slightly changed the appearance of the car and interior.

Nissan Patrol) - a full-fledged SUV with a frame body structure. One of the biggest advantages of this model is that it, over time, does not go out of fashion and does not lose its relevance. Also, a large margin of safety can be attributed to the advantages of this car, which allows the car to remain in good condition. technical condition even after 10 years of operation. But, as often happens, such machines forget to properly and, most importantly, service it on time, as a result, on secondary market instances fall outside of best condition. Therefore, today we will talk about what surprises a used Nissan Patrol of the fifth generation can present, and what to look for when inspecting this vehicle.

A bit of history:

Like many full-fledged SUVs, the Nissan Patrol was created as an army vehicle. The first generation of the car was introduced in 1951, visually, the car resembled one of the first American army vehicles. Willys Jeep. A little later, was released civilian version car. The second generation of the model appeared on the market in 1959 and differed from its predecessor by the presence of a soft roof. Starting with this model, the car was assembled with a short, medium and long base. In 1980, the third generation of the car was presented to the public. Starting from this generation, all versions began to be equipped with leaf spring suspension. Also, various trim options became available, and on luxury models they began to install air conditioning and power steering. In 1983, a restyled version of the car appeared, which is better known as the "MK Patrol". The fourth generation debuted on the market in 1987. The novelty was very different from its predecessors, not only in appearance, but also technically.

Starting with this version, the car is equipped with a spring suspension, stability stabilizers appeared, drum brakes were replaced with disc brakes, and a synchronizer was installed in the transmission reverse gear. Nissan Patrol 5 (Y61) was presented at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1997. Starting from this generation, the manufacturer abandoned strict lines in design, but despite this, the appearance of the car still corresponds to the image of a hardy and severe SUV. Overall length is 510 mm, width 193 mm, height 185 mm. In addition to the extended five-door version, you can also find cars with a short base (three-door) on the market. The car is presented in four body types - station wagon, pickup truck, cargo-passenger van and hardtop. In 2004, a small restyling was carried out: new optics, bumpers and a 4.8 petrol engine. In 2010, a completely updated sixth generation of the model (Y62) appeared on the market.

Weaknesses of a used Nissan Patrol 5

Looking ahead, I would like to note that one of the most vulnerable places of this model is the body. Despite the fact that the paintwork is not of poor quality, corrosion on the body of this car is a common occurrence. Most often, rust appears at the joints of doors, sills and wheel arches. And, if there is no rust in these places, then the car was thoroughly prepared for sale, in this case, the main thing is that the place affected by corrosion should be cleaned and treated with anti-corrosion material, and not just filled with paint.

Engine

The fifth generation Nissan Patrol was equipped with gasoline engines - 4.5 (200 hp) and 4.8 (245 hp) and diesel engines - turbocharged 2.8 (125 and 136 hp), 3.0 (158 and 170 hp). ) and atmospheric 4.2 (125 hp). by the most the best option a 3.0-liter diesel power unit is considered for purchase, since gasoline engines have unreasonably high fuel consumption, and a less powerful diesel engine is frankly not enough. Motor 3.0 of the first years of production had significant disadvantage(the pistons burned out), but in 2004 the manufacturer upgraded and eliminated this defect. Otherwise, this power unit is very reliable and, with timely maintenance, can last more than 500,000 km without major repairs. However, minor troubles may appear after 200,000 km. So, in particular, problems were noted with the air flow meter sensor (traction disappears) and oil pressure in the line and intercooler (if not eliminated in time, there is a high probability of burnout of the pistons).

At each maintenance, it is recommended to check the condition of the high-pressure fuel pump, since if it malfunctions, malfunctions of the injection system occur. Also, over time, oil leaks appear from under the rings of the vacuum pump. A 2.8 engine in terms of reliability is not much inferior to more powerful engine and practically does not cause problems, but only if overheating is not allowed (in most cases, the cylinder head cracks, replacement will cost about 1500 USD . ). In order not to run into an overheated engine, be sure to diagnose the engine in the service. Unlike other power units, this motor is equipped with a timing belt drive, which requires attention during operation (the replacement interval is 60-80 thousand kilometers).

It is also worth noting that all diesel engines are sensitive to fuel quality. The resource of the turbine, on average, is 200-250 thousand km, and its replacement is not a cheap pleasure (about 1000 USD). To check the condition of the turbine, it is necessary to remove the hose that leads from the turbine to intake manifold if there is oil in it, the turbine will soon have to be changed. Also, on cars with a mileage of more than 200,000 km, hydraulic lifters begin to knock (replacement 200-300 USD). There are no special comments on the reliability of gasoline engines, their biggest drawbacks are: high flow fuel (up to 25 liters per 100 km), a small power reserve and a small resource of the belt tensioner attachments(up to 60,000 km).

Transmission

The fifth generation Nissan Patrol was equipped with two types of gearboxes - mechanics and automatic transmission. Both transmissions are quite reliable and do not cause much trouble for 400-500 thousand km. Clutch resource mechanical transmission directly depends on the operating conditions, but it is worth noting that even in the hard “off-road” mode, it will last at least 60 thousand km, and with careful operation it can please with a mileage of 200,000 km. The car is equipped with a plug-in all-wheel drive (regularly rear-wheel drive), but since it does not have a center differential, it can only be used on slippery, snowy or sandy roads, as well as off-road. Otherwise, premature wear transmission parts (chain transfer box, bearings, etc.) and tires are unavoidable. When inspecting the transmission of a car, you need to pay attention to the condition: transfer cases and bridges, as well as check the level and condition of the oil in these mechanisms. In addition, they require special attention"Harbs" (couplings), anthers of steering knuckles, crosses and spline joints of the universal joint.

Suspension reliability Nissan Patrol 5

There is no need to talk about the level of comfort in the car, since the front and rear suspension Nissan Patrol dependent (solid axles with springs suspended on powerful levers) and very rigid. If we talk about its reliability, then it all depends on the operating conditions, but it is worth noting that even under conditions of tough operation, the suspension does not cause any special problems. On average, consumables such as stabilizer struts and bushings live up to 80,000 km. Silent blocks, thrust bearings, tie rod ends, thrust bearings and seals will have to be changed about once every 100-150 thousand km. One of the weakest points in the suspension is the mechanism for changing the stiffness of the stabilizer stroke. With a constant off-road assault, it quickly fails (appears with a knock in the suspension) and needs to be replaced, and this is not a cheap pleasure (about 1000 USD). Therefore, in order to save money, many owners install an all-metal rack. Steering reliable, but, with frequent off-road forays, there may be problems with the steering damper.

Salon

Salon Nissan Patrol 5 is made of enough quality materials, thanks to this, even on cars with a mileage of more than 300,000 km, it does not look pretty shabby, and does not irritate with squeaks and knocks while driving. As for the reliability of electronics, failures occur in it, but, as a rule, they are minor and are eliminated by restarting the system.

Outcome:

In the city, it will be inconvenient to constantly use the Nissan Patrol 5, since it is not agile, and fuel consumption is very high, but on the roads it has practically no equal.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your review that will help readers of our site when choosing a car.

History wide well-known brand The popular SUV Nissan Patrol begins in the mid-50s, the first Japanese jeep with this name was introduced to the world back in September 1951.

For the entire period of production, a concern from Japan created six generations of cars of this brand, and Nissan Patrol 5 has truly become a bestseller in the SUV class.

A bit of history

Each car model produced in its original body is assigned an index, the fifth generation of a full-size SUV received the abbreviation Y61.

For the first time this model appeared in public at the very end of 1997, it was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although the car in this body began to be produced a long time ago, it was sold for the market of some Asian countries for a long time, the Nissan Patrol Y61 was produced until 2013 in parallel with the car of the last, sixth generation.

Its characteristic features are dependent suspension, frame structure body and razdatka with a demultiplier, a car with such design features in our time is no longer common.

Initially, the assembly of the model was carried out in Japan, but in 2000 it was discontinued.

In 1998, the production of the car was launched in Spain, and in 1999 in the Philippines, then Nissan Patrol began to be produced in South Africa and Pakistan.

In 2004, the "off-road conqueror" was restyled, according to tradition, the changes primarily affected the exterior, and the car was modernized:

  • both bumpers;
  • rear lights;
  • head optics;
  • radiator grille.

There have also been some changes in model range power units, the Japanese all-terrain vehicle received a new 4.8-liter gasoline engine.

The main production of the Nissan Patrol 5 was discontinued in 2010, and cars were imported to Russia from the United Arab Emirates, assembly was carried out until the end of 2012.

Appearance and body types

The bodies of all Patrol cars of early releases had angular rectangular shapes, and only in the form of the 5th generation car did some rounding appear.

But the SUV, originally intended for the Armed Forces, still retained an army bearing early, and in his stern appearance you can guess that he is not afraid of swamp slurry and snow-covered country roads.

The impressive dimensions of the Japanese "rogue" also deserve respect, its length in the 5-door version is 5080 mm. There are no large overhangs on the body of the car, so the all-terrain vehicle can easily overcome very steep descents and ascents, ford water obstacles up to 0.7 m deep.

Wide plastic moldings are installed along the bottoms of the doors, and the wheel arches are protected from dirt flying from the road with plastic decorative overlays.

Same automobile company Nissan produced Patrol with a short base in a 3-door version, the length of the short-wheelbase car was 4395 mm.

There are several different types of Y61 bodies, these are:

  • Van (cargo-passenger version);
  • four- and two-door Pickup;
  • Station Wagon (wagon type body);
  • Hardtop (car with a removable hard top).

Solidity in appearance the car is combined with the reliability of the model, even if the design of the SUV is not refined, but this “tank” will not let you down on the road.

Nissan Patrol equipment

For Russia, the Arabic-assembled Patrol Y61 comes in two basic trim levels: Elegance and Luxury, with mechanical or automatic transmission, diesel 3.0 or gasoline engine 4.5 liters (after restyling 4.8 l).

In all variants, only all-wheel drive is provided; Luxury equipment includes:

  • central locking;
  • braking assistance system;
  • power windows,
  • integrated into front bumper fog lights;
  • electric mirrors.
  • air conditioning in the cabin;
  • CD changer;
  • power front seats.

A design feature of the Nissan Patrol is a rear stabilizer bar that can be switched off to improve the vehicle's off-road performance.

In the Elegance configuration, the car looks more solid, in addition to those listed, it has additional options:

  • electric sunroof;
  • leather seats and steering wheel;
  • electric driver's seat;
  • xenon;
  • salon inserts under a tree;
  • Cruise control;
  • subwoofer.

In all variants, four airbags are installed on the Patrol Y61: front passenger and driver, two side airbags.

Nissan Patrol engines

Although for Russian market only three types of engines are presented, in total there are six types of internal combustion engines in the Patrol-5 model range:

  • gasoline 6-cylinder - 4.5 and 4.8 liters (TB45E and TB48DE);
  • diesel 6-cylinder - 2.8 (RD28ET) and 4.2 l (two models - TD422 and TD42T3);
  • diesel 4-cylinder - 3.0 l (ZD30D).

The petrol 4.5-liter power unit has a capacity of 200 horsepower with a maximum torque of 348 Nm.

This six-cylinder internal combustion engine is in-line, with distributed fuel injection, 12-valve.

The engine is designed to work with 95th gasoline, but can also "digest" AI-92.

The engine itself is very reliable, but it has a significant drawback - high fuel consumption. The actual fuel consumption on the highway is 16-18 liters, in the city - up to 25 l / 100 km.

Motor TB48DE - 245-horsepower, six-cylinder, in-line, with a torque of 400 Nm. Up to one hundred kilometers per hour, the internal combustion engine allows the car to accelerate in 10.8 seconds, drive with maximum speed up to 190 km/h.

In terms of reliability to this power unit there are also no complaints, but the consumption of gasoline with it is even greater: on the highway - 14.3 liters, in the city - 25 l / 100 km ( real consumption up to 30 liters).

Turbocharged diesel ZD30D 3.0 l with direct fuel injection has good traction characteristics, allows you to accelerate the car to 160 km / h, dial "hundred" in 16.3 seconds.

Motor power - 160 liters. s., maximum torque at 2000 rpm - 354 Nm. But with decent enough characteristics for a diesel engine, the internal combustion engine does not differ high reliability, first of all, the cylinder head fails.

The main cause of the breakdown is engine overheating, which occurs as a result of coolant leakage, and this is a characteristic disease of the Nissan Patrol 3.0 liter.

Transmission

The 5th generation Japanese SUV Patrol (1997-2010) is equipped with four types of gearboxes:

  • 4 and 5-speed automatic transmission;
  • Manual transmission-5 in two versions - FS5R30A and FS5R50B.

The manual transmission is paired only with the 3.0 TD turbodiesel, also with diesel engine put 4-tbsp. automatic box.

A five-speed automatic transmission is available in the Elegance configuration with a 4.8-liter gasoline engine.

Nissan gearboxes on these cars rarely break down, most often Nissan Patrol repair is necessary if the car has been used for a long time in severe off-road conditions.

On the "mechanics" from frequent slipping, the clutch disc linings wear out, and the car owners themselves are mainly to blame for the malfunctions that occur in the transmission.

For bad roads and passing various obstacles, it is better to choose a car with a manual transmission, such a car is more adapted to harsh road conditions.

Nissan Patrol axles are one-piece, rear-wheel drive is permanent, front axle is forced to connect. Moreover, you can connect it only at low speed - the center differential is not provided here.

Hubs are installed on the front wheels, which are automatic, semi-automatic and mechanical.

The latter type of hubs is very reliable, but in order to connect the front axle, the driver with this design has to get out of the car every time.

On the restyled version, mechanical hubs were no longer installed, and the need to manually change transmission modes disappeared.

Chassis

Both suspensions on an SUV are dependent, the design is very simple, and there is practically nothing to break here. Most vulnerable spot are rear retractable stabilizer struts switchable stabilizer.

The brakes on both axles are disc, and the brake discs are all ventilated.

On early versions of the Nissan Patrol car, the suspension was spring, in the Y61 version, springs were already installed.

But such a design decision made the car move a little softer: when driving on rough roads, passengers in the car shake thoroughly, and it is difficult to somehow deal with this.

Body

The iron on the body of the SUV is not thin, you can’t push it with your finger. But the appearance of rust on paintwork- the phenomenon is not rare, especially often corrosion occurs under the moldings of the side doors, on the wheel arches, on the lower edge of the tailgate.
