In the late 1980s, due to the replacement of the GAZ-66, there were attempts to unify the production of an existing car. So, in 1990, the GAZ-3301 model appeared, built to meet the requirements of the military. Also, a distinctive feature of this car was the presence of a diesel engine. However, the collapse of the USSR and the decline in state purchases put an end to the promising car. In view of this, the production of "shishiga" (GAZ-66) was continued.
However, the development of the new machine continued. Taking into account the softened requirements of the military, and also in view of the practical experience of using a cab above the engine on the GAZ-66 with all its inherent disadvantages (high danger to the crew in case of a mine explosion, great difficulty in repairing the engine, low level of comfort and poor ergonomics in general), and most importantly, a sharp reduction in government purchases for the army and the national economy, the plant management returned to the bonnet layout, but the design of the all-wheel drive chassis remained consistent.

The first prototype of a new all-wheel drive truck was created by the Gorky Automobile Plant in 1995 under the GAZ-3309P index. Serial production of the model, which received the industry index GAZ-3308 and its own name "Sadko", began in December 1997.

In the Russian army, the 2.3-ton truck GAZ-3308 replaced the GAZ-66-40 model with a cab over the engine. The GAZ-3308 uses a modified one (other wings with enlarged wheel arches) cab from GAZ-3309, as well as drive axles and transmission similar to those used on GAZ-66-40.

In September 2000, the GAZ-3308 was offered for export to the armed forces of Ukraine.

The history of the appearance of the GAZ-3308 "Sadko"

GAZ-66 was a unique car for its age, but already in the 1980s it became clear that it was very outdated. In terms of cross-country ability, the car still had no equal, but the GAZ-66 had many shortcomings associated with its age:

Since in the early 90s the Gorky Automobile Plant was practically left without a livelihood, new car had to be developed to reduce the cost of production as much as possible. For this, it was decided to take the GAZ-66 base chassis, lengthen it and install the cab from the GAZ-3309. The first car was released in 1995. She received the GAZ-3309P index. After passing a series of tests, the car was allowed into the series, calling it GAZ-3308.

Appearance of the GAZ-3308 "Sadko"

When new trucks just began to appear on the territory of Russia, many were sure that this self tuning GAZ-3309 models. The cab at first glance was no different, although if you look closely, the new car could notice the following differences:

  • The wide fenders of the original design were needed to accommodate the large wheels;
  • The powerful front axle, like the GAZ-66, was immediately striking;
  • The air filter has been brought out.

In general, the GAZ-3308 turned out to be quite interesting car, reminiscent of the standard "Lawn" modified for off-road. Complete unification with "Shishiga" and GAZ-3309 allowed manufacturers in the conditions of the most powerful economic crisis to release the car in the shortest possible time. For those who previously operated the GAZ-66, the new off-road car from the Gorky Automobile Plant seemed incredibly comfortable. The cab, taken from the GAZ-3309, had the following advantages:

The designers did not manage to get rid of one of the disadvantages of the GAZ-66 - landing in the "Sadko" is still too high and uncomfortable. There are no handrails in the car.

Technical characteristics of the engine and transmission "Sadko"

The most important innovation, which concerned the technical part of the new car, was the new GAZ-3308 engine - this is the MMZ D-245.7 diesel engine, which is produced in Minsk. GAZ-3308 diesel, with a 4.75-liter engine, has sufficient power and throttle response. The turbine in the engine allows the car to accelerate faster.

This engine is considered quite reliable and high-torque, its fuel consumption is about 17 liters. Naturally, when driving off-road, consumption can increase to 25-30 liters. The only thing that drivers who have cars with Minsk engines complain about is insufficient speed characteristics, but you should not expect speed records from a tractor motor. The engine complies with Euro-4 environmental standards and develops 122 hp.

Another popular engine that has been equipped with the GAZ-3308 chassis since 2013 is the YaMZ-53442. This motor is faster.

In addition to diesel engines, GAZ-3308 was also equipped with Gas engine ZMZ-5231. This is an old carburetor engine that runs on gasoline. Its technical characteristics are far from the parameters of more modern diesel engines, but from easy to maintain and repair.   • Fuel consumption is 30-40 percent lower and power diesel engines higher than the GAZ-66.

GAZ-3308 also has some disadvantages:

  • Now the car looks out of date, while it is very far from the brutality of "Shishiga";
  • Inside the cabin, cheap materials are used, and the steering wheel is too large;
  • Compared with foreign cars, it does not have comfort for the driver and passenger;
  • The high cost of both new and used trucks, although this indicates the demand for this vehicle.

Since it is unlikely that it will be possible to buy a GAZ-3308 for little money, these machines are operated mainly legal entities. Hunters and travelers prefer the old GAZ-66, which is several times cheaper. At the same time, the Gorky Automobile Plant designed its new cargo SUV, taking into account subsequent deep upgrades.
