A 1.6-liter gasoline engine of the Pentagon series (on the Mini it wore the index W11B16C), which in the atmospheric version could develop 90 and 115 Horse power, turned out to be quite successful. With proper maintenance, it can withstand a mileage of 250-300 thousand kilometers without problems. This power unit deserves a small note, except for a certain tendency to consume oil. Mini owners who prefer an active driving style have to top up about one and a half liters of oil for 10 thousand kilometers. There are no special claims to the compressor versions of this engine. They are more powerful than atmospheric options (from 163 to 200 horsepower on the Cooper Works version), but they lose only a little in reliability.

But to the gasoline engine of the same volume of the Prince series (EP6), which began to be installed on the Mini after restyling, there are a lot of complaints. BMW developed this power unit together with the French from Peugeot and Citroen, but as a result, the fruit of joint efforts turned out to be frankly “raw”. Complaints rained down as soon as Mini owners with this power unit managed to drive the first 20-30 thousand kilometers. But if at first the new engine upset only the loss of traction, then after another 30 thousand kilometers, many owners had to deal with stretching the seemingly eternal chain in the gas distribution mechanism. This is due to a too weak tensioner and progressive shock loads. Most often, it didn’t come to breaking the chain, but so many Mini owners had to face the “leaving” of the gas distribution phases. For the most inattentive, it came to the meeting of valves with pistons and the subsequent overhaul of the engine. In a word, problem followed problem.

The scale of the disaster was so great that official dealers soon they stopped blaming low-quality fuel and improper operation of the car and began to change the chain, defective tensioner and damper, as well as the cylinder head as part of the warranty repair. In turn, BMW also held serious work over mistakes. Several dozen changes were made to the design of the ill-fated engine, which significantly increased its reliability.

Not all is well with Mini Cooper gearboxes. In the "mechanics", which was installed on the car until 2004, after 80-100 thousand kilometers, wear of synchronizers and gear shift forks was observed. After 2004, the Germans began to install a new Getrag manual gearbox on the car, which turned out to be much better than its predecessor in terms of reliability.


Installed on the Mini and CVT produced by the German company ZF. At quiet ride its resource is at least 200-220 thousand kilometers. But the problem is that rarely does anyone drive a Mini calmly. As a result, the resource of the variator may well be halved. And when buying a car, this should be taken into account, since the repair of the variator cannot be cheap by definition.

In 2005, for the Mini, they began to offer the usual automatic transmission. Its main problem is not enough efficient system cooling. For this reason, as a result of frequent overheating, the “machine” may suffer from oil starvation. In addition, I would like more reliability from the pressure regulator and solenoid valves in the valve body. The oil temperature sensor was also not very reliable.

The Mini Cooper's suspension is not only very stiff, but also very weak. Already after 15-20 thousand kilometers it will need to replace the bushings of the stabilizers, after another 30-40 thousand kilometers it will be the turn of the stabilizer struts. Not very reliable and ball joints. At best, they will withstand about 60 thousand kilometers. The rear shock absorbers on a hatchback can even last a little more than 100 thousand kilometers, but along with them, most often you have to change the suspension arms that have almost exhausted their resource.

Too many problems with the Mini. A funny little car, although it will delight every day with its stylish appearance and excellent handling, but in return will require regular service calls. The small Mini car was first created a very long time ago - about 50 years ago and was as simple as a door. But in 2001 German concern BMW, this car was re-released, but there were a lot of differences in it compared to the old car: the design became more complex, new technologies were introduced, general machine turned out to be quite serious in technical terms. Therefore, modern Mini is extremely difficult to repair.

BMW has been developing a new Mini Cooper for a very long time, 6-cylinder BMW engines did not fit under the hood, but a compact 4-cylinder was needed. So, I had to take the 1.6-liter Pentagon series engine, which was installed in some Chrysler cars.

This motor has an index W11B16C, it turned out quite reliable engine, there are options with a mechanical Roots compressor, which is on the Cooper S and Cooper Works, the power of these motors varies between 163 - 200 hp. from.; and an atmospheric version of the engine, which is installed on versions of the Mini One with a capacity of 90 hp. from. and Mini Cooper, whose power is 115 liters. from. The atmospheric version with the W10B16 index is considered more reliable, it will easily last at least 300 thousand km, if you make sure that the oil and coolant levels are normal. If you drive in active mode, then the oil consumption can be 1.5 liters per 10,000 km. run.

There are also diesel engine W17D14A, its volume is 1.4 liters, it is installed mainly on Mini One, it is also enough reliable motor, in early models it was taken from Toyota, which installed these engines on Yaris 1999-2005. In 2006, there was a Mini restyled, so the diesel engine also became more modern - from the joint concern Peugeot-Citroen. Only in 2009 did Mini begin to install diesel engines own production - N47 engines, the volume of which is 1.6 and 2.0 liters. These engines are also distinguished by their durability, unlike French engines, which are sensitive to fuel quality, and their control electronics are more complex.

But these are all trifles compared to the problems that were Prince gasoline engine (EP6), which began to be installed on the Mini after restyling in 2006 instead of the Pentagon series engine.

This engine was installed on Mini, Citroen and Peugeot, all owners of these cars had problems with the engine after 30,000 km. Traction began to disappear, and all due to the fact that the design of the cylinder head was unsuccessful. The channels of the block head were clogged with deposits. And after 60,000 km. started to stretch valve train chain due to a weak tensioner and increasing shock loads.

Then everything goes according to several scenarios: either the chain breaks, which immediately leads to overhaul engine, or the valve timing is gradually shifted. Since the drive sprocket crankshaft is not securely fixed, with just one bolt, without keys and splines, then the situation worsens even more - the motor loses power, pistons may burn out, and on turbocharged versions, boost may turn off at a certain rotation of the sprocket and traction will suddenly disappear.

In general, the outcome is also not happy - the pistons will meet the valves and then an expensive (about 6,000 euros) overhaul follows. Therefore, in order to prevent such a situation, it is necessary immediately, at the first extraneous noise from under valve cover, or, when traction starts to disappear, immediately change the timing drive completely, it will cost 2000-3000 euros, which in the end is cheaper than doing a major overhaul.

This problem is common, and dealers have already stopped blaming low-quality fuel and careless operation and have begun to change cylinder heads, timing chains, dampers and tensioners under warranty. Only in 2010, BMW did a great job, during which bugs were fixed, the engine received a huge number of changes: a new cylinder head, new tensioner and oil pump, even new software for the engine management system and much more.

Transmission

Concerning gearboxes, then here the situation is different: Minis of the early years of production were equipped with rather short-lived mechanics for 5 steps (Midland), English-made, a new one costs 3500 euros, it was installed until 2004. After about 90000 synchronizers the end comes, also the shift forks also wear out a lot by this run, as a result, the gears are stuck in with difficulty and easily fly out. After 2004, the manufacturer began to install more reliable German-made Gertrag boxes in 5 and 6 steps in the Mini. A 5-speed is more reliable, and on a 6-speed after 140,000 km. synchronizers fail.

Regarding the 2-pedal Mini, but initially there were models with ZF variator, which serves for a long time, if you drive quietly - more than 200,000 km. But the variator does not like active driving, it starts to twitch and after 100,000 it fails. New box costs 5000 euros, and if you make repairs, then you need to prepare about 2000 euros.

After 2005 there was 6-speed automatic Aisin 6F21WA, which was installed on the Golf, Passat and Audi A3, such a box lasts longer than the variator. But it has a slightly weak cooling system, so this box can overheat in hot weather when driving through traffic jams. In general, in an unfortunate combination of circumstances, when overheating occurs in the box, oil starvation, scuffing on the bearing bushings of the pump and planetary gear set. In general, the repair can pull up to 2000 euros, the pressure regulator can also go out of standing, solenoid valves from the valve body and an oil temperature sensor. But in general, the box is reliable.

Overheating happens not only in the gearbox, even the first generation Mini suffers from overheating power steering pump when the auxiliary fan fails, after which the pump starts to make noise. Replacing the old pump with a new one will cost 900 euros, and a new additional fan costs 120 euros. By the way, this fan is not very well located - at the bottom engine compartment, so it quickly becomes clogged and ceases to function. On cars manufactured after 2006, they began to install electric power steering, but they have a risk that over time, play will appear in the rack and pinion mechanism. So, summing up, we can say that Mini Coopers are not particularly reliable, repairs are expensive, there is no comfort in the cabin, and the car is impractical. Yes, and it is a little expensive - if you take a less problematic package from the German mechanical box gears and a Brazilian engine, then such a car manufactured in 2006 will cost approximately 500,000 - 600,000 rubles. Many will say that the same Countryman or Clubman already exists as a 5-door version, but alas, this is a crossover class, and not a compact hatchback. The regular 5-door Mini Cooper was the first to be presented, and not so long ago, a charged version was introduced, also known as the Mini Cooper S 5D.

With the usual 5-door Mini Cooper, the differences are minimal, but still, the charged version of the hatchback looks an order of magnitude richer and more stylish. Apart from standard options Mini Cooper S, the manufacturer offers many options to emphasize and diversify the usual look of a hatchback. In the article, we will consider a charged 5-door hatchback Mini Cooper S 2018-2019, also named by the manufacturer as 5D.

The appearance of the 5-door hatchback Mini Cooper S 2018-2019 is almost no different from the usual 3-door counterpart. But if you take a good look, then there are still differences, both in the door frames themselves and in individual details of the exterior. The front of the new charged Mini Cooper S stands out with a more evil grille and an additional one at the bottom of the bumper. The radiator grille includes a large number of small parts, including sensors and sensors for security systems. The upper part is made of black mesh insert.

Below the grille is divided into two parts by a black glossy wide strip and a small chrome one.
