Tesla car and everything about it

Tesla electric cars are environmentally friendly electric vehicles with exemplary technical characteristics. These cars travel up to 500 kilometers on a single charge and show good dynamics in acceleration.

Tesla electric cars Elon Musk

The founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX is one of the most significant figures investing in human progress and space exploration.

Elon (Elon) Reeve Musk(eng. Elon Reeve Musk) - Canadian-American engineer, entrepreneur, inventor, investor. Elon Musk is the founder of Paypal, SpaceX, Tesla, and also a member of the board of directors of SolarCity, founded by his cousins.

How does an electric car work?

An electric vehicle is a vehicle powered by one or more electric motors. Externally, electric cars look exactly the same as gasoline cars.

The only thing that an electric car gives out while it is moving is the almost complete absence of sound when the engine is running. But although gasoline and electric cars look very similar in appearance, they differ significantly in how they operate.
Under the hood of an electric car instead gasoline engine An electric motor is installed, which is powered by batteries. The batteries perform the function " fuel tank"and provide
An electric motor provides the energy needed to move the vehicle. The electric vehicle is also equipped with a controller - a control unit for the operation of the electric motor, which regulates the currents in the network between the batteries and the engine.

All other components in an electric car are practically the same as in a gasoline car: gearbox, brakes, airbags, etc.

Electric cars began to fill the streets of New York en masse 100 years ago. But why are they still not popular all over the world? The answer is simple - at that time there was not enough powerful batteries. With the development of battery technology large capacity appeared, and quite a long time ago.

Dozens of years ago, at various exhibitions and in news stories, prototypes of electric cars that were quite efficient and practical began to catch our eye. Each of these new products had something unique and innovative, some manufacturers even put them into mass production and set an affordable price for buyers. But why are cars with gasoline engines still the main means of transportation?

This is because at that time there was no electric car that could make a revolution. All electric cars were praised in narrow circles of geeks, but did not find recognition among ordinary people.

There were family models that could save money, but there was no supercar, the notebook on the cover of which schoolchildren would sweep off the shelves and which boys dreamed of with early years. The world of electric vehicles did not have its own iPhone and its Steve Jobs, who would have developed it. There was no electric car with “wow!” effect.

Start

Now such a revolutionary car exists. Meet the Tesla Model S. This full-size five-door luxury liftback began changing the world for the better in 2012. The ideological father of the project is the American engineer and entrepreneur Elon Musk, who presented the Model S prototype to the whole world at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in 2009.

Today, few people remember how many problems preceded this presentation; Tesla Motors was even on the verge of bankruptcy. However, Musk believed in the idea of a serial electric car to the end, invested all his savings and was able to find investors. And subsequently his efforts bore fruit: the first limited edition of 1,000 copies worth about $100 thousand each sold like hot cakes!

Such a fantastic success is not surprising, since until now Tesla remains an electric car with the largest reserve range without recharging, accelerates to 100 km/h in, just a minute, 2.8 seconds!!! (meaning the top version of the Modes S P85D with Ludicrous mode), and also has the title of the safest vehicle on the roads in the USA.

The reality exceeded all expectations. For the first time in 10 years of existence, Tesla Motors made a profit, paid off all debts and increased production of Model S. By this time, about 50,000 of these electric cars are driving around the world.

Tesla Model S battery and its characteristics

This electric car is equipped with a modern lithium-ion battery with a capacity 85 kWh or 60 kWh(depending on the configuration) . This battery is enough to cover a distance equal to 426 km And 335 km respectively!!! This indicator easily competes with others gasoline cars segment S. The battery consists of 16 blocks and is located along the bottom of the car, which further increases torsional rigidity and safety. Thus, this arrangement of the battery allows you to reduce the center of gravity of the car to 45 cm.

  • Battery type: Li-ion
  • Battery capacity: 85 / 60 kWh*
  • Range before full charge: 426 / 335 km*
  • Resource: 7 years or 160 thousand km
  • Battery dimensions: Length - 2.1 m, Width - 1.2 m, Height - 15 cm
  • Battery weight: ~450 kg

  • Charging time from a household AC 220V network: 50 km of travel is replenished in 1 hour
  • Full charging time at Tesla Supercharger station: 30 minutes and free

Tesla Model S Engine and Transmission

The electric vehicle has an asynchronous three-phase AC motor. The engine is own development company Tesla Motors and has no analogues. The electric motor is installed on rear axle car. Tesla Model S engine power in maximum configuration- 416 l. s., maximum (constant) torque - 600 Nm. The electric motor is cooled using liquid system cooling.

In addition, a modern electric car has reliable transmission from Mercedes-Benz, which drives the car using a single-stage gearbox (one speed). The gear ratio is 9.73.

  • Maximum speed: 209 / 201 / 193 km/h*
  • Power: 416 / 362 / 302 l. With.
  • Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h: 4.4 / 5.4 / 5.9 sec*

Tesla Model S is simply soaked modern technologies, is no exception and chassis auto. Air suspension is capable of changing the clearance of the car; it is enough to set the desired ground clearance and the car will rise or fall at the request of the owner. Due to the low center of gravity, the car feels confident even with decent ground clearance “ala Tiguan”.

The steering is rack and pinion and is, of course, electrically power assisted. The on-board computer allows you to set the steering stiffness. There are several levels, ranging from sporty hard to comfortable “Mercedes” soft, very comfortable, don’t you agree?

Tesla Model S Brake System deserves special attention. The main braking system consists of ventilated brake discs And electronic system parking brake. But the main feature of this electric car is the regenerative braking system. With its help, the car is able to brake the engine and convert the resulting energy into electricity, thereby charging the car's battery. This is an extremely useful and convenient feature. To activate the regenerative braking system, the driver just needs to smoothly release the gas pedal and the electric car itself will begin to slow down, converting the braking energy into useful energy.

How does a Tesla electric car work?

Under the hood there is nothing that we are used to seeing in a car with an internal combustion engine. There's a trunk here instead.

The back is the same. The trunk is quite spacious; if desired, you can install child seats facing the glass.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 85 kWh lithium-ion battery lasts for 426 km, which allows Model S to cover the greatest distance of any electric vehicle available on the market. Initially, Tesla's plans were to begin production of cars with batteries with capacities of 60 kWh (335 km) and 40 kWh (260 km) in 2013, but due to low demand, it was decided to abandon the 40 kWh model. The base S model uses a liquid-cooled AC motor that produces 362 horsepower s.

The car battery (there are 16 blocks) contains about 7 thousand AA batteries laid with a special distribution of positive and negative contacts, which is kept secret.

Let's take a look inside the car. Instead of the usual instruments on the panel, there is an LCD monitor with all the necessary functional buttons and information about the operating status of the car.

How to charge a Tesla

The simple answer is easy and simple.

Simple mathematics and basic electrical engineering course, 8th grade high school.

Remember that power is expressed in kilowatts and is equal to the current in amperes multiplied by the voltage in volts.

And the capacity of a Tesla battery is either 60 kWh or 85 kWh, depending on the modification.

And we also remember that it’s normal charger operates in the range 100-240V 50-60Hz. There are no problems with Russian power grids.

The main thing is not to submit three phases 🙂 but an abstract name without an electrician fighter will not cope with this task, and stupid electrician fighters are extremely rare in nature, natural selection is all that matters.

The machines are manufactured at the Fremont plant in the USA. As you would expect from Elon Musk's company, the Tesla plant is one of the most advanced automobile factories in the world. It is equipped with more than a hundred robots.

To build a new plant from scratch, Elon Musk decided to purchase an old abandoned automobile plant NUMMI, which is located in Fremont, in East San Francisco. From 1984 to 2010 this plant was used Toyota companies and General Motors for the production of some of its car models. The plant was purchased by Tesla for 42 million. dollars. The plant was first built in 1962. The total area of the plant and surrounding areas is 153 hectares. Tesla's production line is equipped with more than 150 robots. However, robots don't do everything here. The plant employs several thousand people. Many parts of the car, such as interior trim, can currently only be installed by hand.

Autopilot Tesla

Recently, new Tesla firmware was released, the highlight of which was actually a full-fledged autopilot, now available to all owners of Model S and Model X. Then we captured on video the first inclusion of this function in Russia on the roads of a metropolis. Of course, we couldn’t help but talk about it in detail - and we couldn’t find anything better than testing the autopilot in real “combat” conditions of live Moscow traffic.

The autopilot combines images from four cameras of the electric vehicle. At the same time, three of them demonstrate objects of the surrounding world that the autopilot recognizes, and the fourth shows what the passenger sees in the car.

Objects that are visible to the autopilot cameras are highlighted in different colors. So, road signs the system sees in purple, and pedestrians and cars in green.

Also, thanks to the system, the car independently slows down as it approaches the passenger and parks.

Tesla car price Tesla model

How much does an electric car cost, let's look at the table below and find out the price of a Tesla car

Prices for Tesla electric cars

Tesla truck Tesla Semi electric traction

And here is another step into the future, electric vehicles are stepping forward and are already beginning to conquer the freight transportation market.

Tesla introduced its first electric truck, called Tesla Sami. The presentation took place on November 16 in the USA (November 17, Kyiv time). The new product was traditionally presented by the founder and head of the company, Elon Musk.

As company representatives assure, the Tesla Semi's service life will be one million kilometers. This means that during its life cycle the truck will be able to travel around the globe 40 times.

But look below at the photo of the Tesla Semi electric truck

It first became known that Tesla was developing a truck in the summer of 2016. Then the automaker published a “top secret plan” that announced the development of such a model.

The same document indicated that Tesla would also make a bus, a pickup truck and a compact crossover.

This spring, Musk said that the debut of the truck is scheduled for September. Why the plans were revised is not specified.

Tesla plans to begin selling Tesla Semi electric trucks to delivery companies in 2019. The company is currently testing and improving electric trucks. As part of the testing, the company will continue to use electric trucks to deliver its own cargo.

Currently batteries for Tesla Model 3 assembled from elements of standard size 2170, which replaced to the previous generation 18650 cells, which were used in Tesla electric vehicles (Model S/X).

It should be noted that the volume of the cylinder grows exponentially with increasing radius, so even with a slight increase in the diameter (21 mm versus 18 mm) and length (70 mm versus 65 mm) of the battery, its capacity increases by almost a third.

Next we see how, after the battery is completely discharged, the demonstrator carefully opens it, cutting off the upper part. Underneath there is an insulator made of blue plastic, which prevents the internal contents of the battery, assembled in the form of a roll, from shorting to the body. There is a similar insulator at the opposite end of the element. Once the aluminum housing is cut, it can be seen that the inside has a thin layer of additional insulation. There are three small holes at the top of the battery to allow gas to escape when the cell heats up.

The extracted “roll” is a tightly rolled piece of thin copper plate (foil), about 80 cm long - this is the cathode (minus), and aluminum foil of the same length acts as the anode (plus), they are separated by a dielectric plastic film. Both metals are coated with a graphite layer, which is impregnated with lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide electrolyte (LiNiCoAlO2), which actually stores the electrical charge.

Thus, compared to the anode and cathode length of the 18650 cell (61 cm) used in the Tesla Model S, the 21700 cells received 30% more capacity

The American automobile company Tesla was created in 2003 in Silicon Valley by Martin Eberhard, who worked on improving batteries. The company's investors included Elon Musk from PayPal and Larry Page and Sergey Brin from Google.

From the very beginning, Tesla set itself the task of developing an electric car not for a narrow group of consumers, but for all car lovers. Appearance The concept electric car was created by designers from the Lotus company, so the similarity of its exterior with the Lotus Elise is understandable. Further cooperation between Tesla and Lotus led to the natural decision to assemble an electric car at Lotus Cars facilities.

Martin Eberhard had enough high-tech equipment employees in Silicon Valley, and automotive engineers had to be lured away from Lotus.

Lotus management threatened to shut down production of the electric car at its plant, and Eberhard had to look elsewhere for automotive engineers. By 2007, several roadsters with an electric motor had already been assembled, and they were shown to a stellar Californian audience.

At the show, you could only sign up in line to purchase a Tesla Roadster, and you were not allowed to drive a few hundred meters. Even the famous actor and governor of California at that time, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was not given an electric car.

The estimated original price for the roadster was $100,000. The dynamic characteristics of the Tesla model were not inferior to those modern car using high-octane gasoline. Electric car engine with a power of 250 hp. brings the roadster to a speed of 100 km/h in 4 seconds without engine roar. Without recharging, the Tesla Roadster travels about 400 km. The body of the electric car is made of carbon fiber.

Nowadays, Tesla is the leader in the electric vehicle market in the world. Tesla management is more than confident that the future belongs to electric cars due to the finite hydrocarbon resources on the planet. The company released its first mass-produced electric car, the Tesla Model S, in 2012; at the end of 2013, almost 5 thousand of these cars were sold in the United States. Second serial model Tesla has become the Model X crossover, the rear doors of which open like a gullwing. In 2016, the American company begins production of the most affordable and compact new product – Model 3, which is designed to increase demand for electric vehicles against the backdrop of the more expensive Model S and Model X. In 2017, the company’s founder, Elon Musk, presented the company’s further development strategy, according to which in the future production of commercial vehicles is planned.

It has become possible today to buy a Tesla electric car in Ukraine and Russia, especially if you have a sufficient amount of banknotes :)

How to register an electric car in Ukraine

According to Art. 31 of the Law of Ukraine “On traffic", vehicles imported into the territory of Ukraine are subject to inspection for compliance with current standards or must have a certificate issued by the UNECE Secretariat authorized for this - the Administrative Body for the Certification of Road Vehicles. This certificate of conformity is checked by both customs authorities and the State Traffic Inspectorate when registering a car. The rules for importing vehicles into the territory of Ukraine are determined by the Cabinet of Ministers.

The rules for state registration of vehicles, approved by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 1388 dated September 7, 1998, one of the documents confirming the eligibility of the purchase of a vehicle and being the basis for its registration with the traffic police, determines the customs authority’s certificate of registration of the vehicle (cargo customs declaration – for legal entities).

Therefore, it will be possible to talk about registration with the State Traffic Inspectorate only after customs clearance of the car is mandatory in such cases. In other words, if “customs gives the go-ahead” for the import of an electric car into the territory of Ukraine and backs it up with the appropriate documents, then there will be no problems with its registration with the MREO of the State Traffic Inspectorate.

Registering an electric car in Russia

Amendments to the Russian government decree “On state registration of motor vehicles and other types of self-propelled equipment on the territory of the Russian Federation” came into force, according to which cars with electric motors now also need to be registered with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate and a compulsory motor liability insurance policy must be issued for them.

This is reported by " Russian newspaper" In accordance with the new decree, state registration is required for all electric vehicles whose engine power exceeds 5.5 hp and whose maximum speed exceeds 50 km/h.

In addition, the new amendments strictly defined the procedure for issuing registration plates. Now numbers should be issued only in order of priority without reservation for legal or individuals individual series or combinations of characters. This means that now everyone who wants to get a “fashionable” license plate with a special combination of numbers or letters will have to wait until this series appears in traffic police departments.

Tesla Model S is the second car model of the American car manufacturer from Silicon Valley, which accounts for the majority of sales of Tesla, Inc. electric vehicles; 100,000 Model S units were sold by the end of 2015 alone.

Work on the projects began in June 2008, initially under the name "Whitestar". The prototype was shown on March 26, 2009 at a press conference. From June 22, 2012, the electric car was available to the first buyers.

Tesla Model S at the time of its production is a fantastic and exotic car for the countries of the post-Soviet space. In addition to this, an electric car is environmentally friendly and economically beneficial.

Depending on the battery capacity and driving style, the driving range on a single charge varies from 200 to 600 km. For long-distance travel, owners of most versions of the Model C (particularly those sold before 2016) are provided with free charging (for about 30 minutes) at more than 1,000 Tesla stations.

The body structure is predominantly aluminum, with steel used only to add strength in key areas. The resulting rigidity made it possible to give the car good dynamics, despite its size and weight.

Dynamics

It is unlikely that it will be possible to convey in words the feeling of accelerating in a Tesla... without gear shifting, delays, no engine noise - you only feel the dynamics of the sports car and hear the noise from the wheels.

Thanks to the low center of gravity, the 2-ton car behaves confidently and smoothly even on the roads of the CIS countries, and although rigidity is present, it does not affect comfort in any way.

Interior

Instead of a regular key, the Tesla electric car has a key fob shaped like a Tesla model with three buttons.

Using the key it is possible to open: 1 - Rear trunk lid; 2 - Full locking/unlocking of the car; 3 — Front trunk lid;

When it comes to the interior, it is worth noting that Tesla offers a unique and spacious salon, which is very modern, comfortable and may seem very unusual when you first get into the car. There are practically no buttons in the car for monitoring and controlling any functions (only the emergency signal buttons and for opening the glove compartment). Instead, many functions are controlled via a powerful touchscreen located on the center console.

All adjustments/settings are accessible through the main 17-inch touchscreen monitor. The interface looks like an iPad and is easy to use. If a person uses a smartphone, it will not be difficult for him to master the functionality of the user menu within a few minutes of studying the interface. It is possible to change the order of icons on the screen, just like on many modern smartphones. Internet access will allow you to look for directions or just any information while on the road.

Since Tesla is a software developer, the car software is updated periodically thanks to Internet access

In general, the materials used in the Model S are different high quality, but people accustomed to buying exclusive luxury sedans may think that some of the materials smack of cheapness. For example, the leather upholstery may not feel as soft as on a luxury car, or the gearshift knob like a Mercedes (influenced by the collaboration with DAIMLER). However, Model S offers high-quality interior, which is comfortable enough to compete with most other luxury sedans on the market.

There's plenty of legroom in the front and rear seats, but rear space can feel limited for tall passengers. The seats are quite comfortable and offer plenty of support.

Optionally, it is possible to order additional seats (third row), which effectively fold under the rear part of the loading floor and do not occupy luggage compartment. This option will turn a 4-door sedan into a 7-seater electric car, or even a minivan with the appearance of a sedan. But it is worth noting that the optional seats are small and suitable for use by people of short stature.

Trunk

As mentioned above, the key provides access to the trunks. The rear luggage space is impressively spacious and provides 745 liters of space, with a maximum volume of 1645 liters with the rear seats folded down. The volume of the front additional small trunk is 150 liters.

Equipment

Tesla Model C configurations allow you to choose quite individually external design in a minimalist style, and at the same time not deprive the interior of functionality.

Battery & Charging

The Model S battery represents an assembly of approximately 8,000 (the number depends on the battery capacity) 18650 lithium-ion batteries.

The Model S battery can be charged from a household 120-volt or 240-volt outlet in the home or at public charging stations using the universal mobile connector included with the vehicle. Charging a battery from a 240-volt outlet takes approximately 5 hours, for example a 40-kilowatt battery. Charging a 60 kWh battery will take about 8 hours, and an 85 kWh battery will charge in approximately 12 hours.

A dual charger will roughly halve your charging time.

The battery can also be charged using charging stations from Tesla Superchargers. Tesla car owners can charge the battery in 30 minutes, which is enough to travel about 270 km, but Superchargers are available in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.

Power system

Because Model S is an electric vehicle, its powertrain consists of a single water-cooled electric motor that is powered by a battery and sends power through a single-speed transmission to the rear or all four wheels.

The electric motor on the Tesla Model S is an asynchronous AC motor with liquid cooled and variable frequency drive. The operating voltage of the motor is 375 V, and the maximum rotation speed is 16,000 rpm.

Transmission

The Model C has a single-speed gearbox with a fixed gear ratio ( gear ratio final drive 9.73:1).
Broadcast reverse is carried out due to the reverse rotation of the electric motor, the speed is limited to 24 km/h.

Steering

Rack and pinion with electric booster, with variable force depending on the speed. The number of turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock is 2.45, and the turning diameter (along the outer wheel) is 11.3 meters.

Brake system

Type brake system— 4-channel anti-lock braking system And electronic distribution braking forces, dynamic stabilization system and braking energy recovery system driven by electronic pedal accelerator.

Suspension

Model S front suspension - independent, double wishbone, air or coil springs/telescopic shock absorbers, stabilizer lateral stability.

Rear suspension - independent, multi-link, with pneumatic elements or coil springs/telescopic shock absorbers, anti-roll bar (for vehicles with air suspension).

High voltage battery is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery with an operating voltage of 40 to 100 kWh. Voltage and polarity 366 V DC, the negative terminal is connected to the body ground.

Restyling

After restyling, the car's appearance changed significantly only at the front. The hood has become 2 centimeters longer, and the bumper (without the front grille) and front LED headlights have naturally changed. It is also worth noting that the radar on the front bumper has been moved under the left headlight.

The space in the front trunk has been increased and a new one has been installed air filter.

Model range

The Model C is the company's most popular version, a five-door liftback. Over the entire production period, Model S is available in several rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variations, the electric motor power of which ranges from 40 to 100 kWh.

The Model S lineup initially consisted of the rear-wheel drive Model S 40, 60 and 85.

According to Motor Trend magazine (USA), the Tesla Model C was recognized as the 2013 Car of the Year, but this is not the only award for the Model S

In the USA, the first deliveries of Tesla Model S started in June 2012, in Europe - in August 2013, and in 2014, deliveries to China began.

Since 2014, the Model S 60 began to be equipped with the same engine as the S 85, and in 2015 the 60-kilowatt modification was replaced by two S 70 models (with a 70 kWh battery) and an all-wheel drive S 70D (with the same battery, but with two engines).

At the same time, new models were introduced - Model S 85D (with two engines) and a more advanced version with all-wheel drive Model S P85D.

The letter “D” in Model S modifications stands for the abbreviation Dual Motor.

Tesla Model S Standard

IN standard Model S is equipped with one electric motor located on the rear axle.

Technical characteristics of the Tesla Model C model range in the basic configuration:

Tesla Model S Dual Motor

The all-wheel drive Tesla Model S has two motors (Dual Motor), one in the front and one in the rear, which gives independent control of torque at the front and rear. rear wheels, and the result is unprecedented traction control in all conditions.

The all-wheel drive Tesla Model C uses complex mechanical connections to distribute power to all wheels, effectively favoring the load. The Tesla Model S electric motor is lighter, smaller and more efficient than its equivalent rear wheel drive, which provides improved acceleration.

In October 2014, the first versions of Model S with two “Dual Motor” engines were presented. Thanks to the second motor, the front axle wheels are driven independently of existing engine rear axle, so the option with two electric motors not only provides significantly higher power, but also reduces energy consumption, which allows for an increase in driving range of ~ 16-20 km.

On October 9, 2014, the company announced the release of AWD models - S 60, S 85 and P85, these modifications are indicated by the letter D at the end of the model number.

In April 2015, Tesla introduced the Model S 70D with all-wheel drive and an increased range on a single charge.

The 85D replaced the electric motor on the rear axle with a smaller one to save on cost and weight, and a second motor of the same size was added to the front axle. This layout results in the all-wheel drive (AWD) version being comparable in power and acceleration to the rear-wheel drive Model S (RWD).

In June 2016, Tesla updated the S 60 and S 60D models, which had a 75 kWh battery installed, but 60 kWh was available in software (it was possible to unlock up to 75 kWh for a fee).

In August 2016, the S P100D model with Ludicrous mode was introduced as the top-of-the-line model with all-wheel drive and improved range (507 km). The peculiarity of this model is that it is the first electric car with a range of more than 300 miles, in addition, it is worth noting that the P100D model is the fastest in acceleration from 0-60 km per hour - 2.8 seconds, with the “Ludicrous Mode” mode. .

In April 2017, Tesla discontinued the S60 and S60D models, as most customers were buying more powerful versions, with a battery size of 75 kW, making the S 75 - basic model Model S lineup.

Parameters of the Model S lineup equipped with two engines:

Tesla Model S Performance

Performance doesn't mean top equipment, since in the case of Tesla, Model S Performance has a more powerful electric motor and sports suspension, and with all this, inside the car can without all sorts of available functions and retrofit elements.

It is also worth noting that Model S with all-wheel drive is more efficient and economical

Combination of technology, high performance front motor and high performance rear motor electric motor allows you to accelerate, for example, the Model S P85D from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.

Since December 2014, the first Performance Edition has been available - Tesla S P85. Model S Performance comes standard with all-wheel drive, except for the version with the 85-kilowatt battery.

Technical Parameters special version Model S with highest performance:

Dimensions

Guarantee

Since August 2014, Tesla has extended the factory warranty on the Model S to 8 years and unlimited mileage. Only the Model S 60 is excluded, which has warranty period 8 years with a maximum warranty mileage of 200,000 kilometers.

Bottom line

There is no doubt that the Tesla Model S is a unique car. Although it's no Rolls-Royce, this car comes with technology you won't find in others. vehicles, at least at first. In addition, you never have to visit a gas station and spend on periodic maintenance at a cost that exceeds the cost of maintenance for cars with internal combustion engines.

The Model X has been a long time coming. The prototype was shown at the beginning of 2012, and people started ordering the car 2 years ago. And now the first thousand cars rolled off the assembly line. The first buyer from Russia was Alexey, director of the Moscow Tesla Club. He received the 410th car to roll off the assembly line. I flew with him to Philadelphia to test the new car.

Two most popular questions:

What is the price?

$135,000. After paying all excise taxes, taxes and duties in Russia it will cost 200,000 dollars, or 16 million rubles.

How long does the battery last?

Maximum for 450 km. But this is under ideal conditions. In fact, it turns out to be from 350 to 400 km.

Now let's carefully study this miracle!

All photos and interesting details, as usual, are in the post, but this time I have also prepared a video review for you:

Thanks to the guys from the "Inside Out" studio for editing the video.

01. This is what Model X looks like. Officially it is considered a crossover, although I think it is a little small for a crossover. In size it is very similar to the BMW GT. Elon Musk said in 2012 that when creating X, the goal was to combine the functionality of a minivan, the style of an SUV and the characteristics of a sports car.

02. Looks prettier than , but still nothing special. What makes Tesla stand out is not its appearance, but its technology.

The machine exists in two versions:

The 90D model is equipped with two 259-horsepower engines and reaches 100 km/h in 5 seconds, which is 0.1 seconds faster than the 440-horsepower SUV Porsche Cayenne GTS.

The P90D version is equipped with two electric motors with a total power of 772 horsepower: 259 hp. on the front axle and 503 hp. on the back. This model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4 seconds, and with the optional Ludicrous Speed Upgrade package in 3.4 seconds. This model is faster than Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 or McLaren MP4-12C. The maximum speed is limited to 250 km per hour.

The car is so fast and accelerates so unexpectedly easily that the slightly tense smile of people that appears from a sudden overload has already been nicknamed the “Tesla grin” (“Tesla grin”).

We have just the P90D, but without the additional package;)

04. Pay attention to the front. If you remember, the S had a black plastic cover where the grille should be. The prototype Model X also had a plug, but it was abandoned on the production version. In my opinion, a very correct decision. The car began to look much more impressive.

05. Funny thing is that there is no room for a license plate on the front. This moment was somehow not thought through. In the USA, numbers must be hung only from the back; the “face” can remain pristinely clean. But Teslas are also sold in other countries, including Russia, but we need front license plates. In general, I wonder if one day there will be a special modification for Europe and Russia with space for numbers.

06. Everything is provided at the back. But Musk has planned the expansion of electric vehicles)

07. Model X has a huge windshield. It continues until the middle of the roof. On the one hand it is beautiful. On the other hand, it’s expensive to replace if a pebble hits. Other automakers, such as Opel or Peugeot, also install similar glass.

08. Glass also protects from ultraviolet radiation.

09. The most important thing is the gull-wing doors, which Tesla calls “Falcon Wing doors”. Their peculiarity is that they have two points of articulation, i.e. two loops, not one (unlike the gull wing). And the falcon’s wings first rise upward, clinging to the car, and only then open to the sides. This allows them to be opened in rather narrow spaces.

10. They open automatically. Getting into the back seat with such doors becomes much more convenient. You can stand up to your full height without having to bend over to get into the seat. With such doors it is also convenient to seat children in child seat: you don’t have to bend down when pulling weights into the machine with outstretched arms.

11. On the other hand, there are also disadvantages. Firstly, since the doors are automatic, they open slowly, about 5 seconds. That is, you won’t be able to quickly jump out of the back seat, just as you won’t be able to sit down quickly. Secondly, in winter, through completely open doors All the heat comes out instantly. Thirdly, there are sensors in the doors, and if another car is parked nearby, the door will not open. Although they only need 30 centimeters, these 30 centimeters are not always available in the parking lot. As a spectacular toy, these doors will, of course, bring joy to the owner, but in practice, it seems to me, they are of little use.

Although the presentation showed that the Model X can open the doors even when it is almost jammed by cars on both sides.

In addition, it has an ultrasonic sensor that detects maximum height, to which the doors can be opened. This is convenient, for example, in the garage.

12. Headlights

13. Rear

14. As with the Model S, great attention is paid to detail.

15. This configuration includes 22-inch wheels. The standard configuration is 20-inch.

16. Handles. If you remember, in the Model S the handles extended when the owner appeared. There were a lot of complaints back then: sometimes they didn’t work in the cold, sometimes they didn’t work at all. Despite the fact that all the errors with pens, in new car Tesla has abandoned retractable handles. In general, she refused pens. Now these are buttons. That is, you need to press the chrome plate and the door will open. Both the rear wing doors and the front doors now open automatically. There may be a problem here. If your door freezes in winter, you can pull the handle and still open the door. There is nothing to pull in the new Tesla. So if it’s frozen, it means it’s frozen. The second problem: if your car is parked on a slope, for example, you hit the curb with one wheel, then the door will open slightly, but will not swing open. And you will have to pry it with your fingers and open it behind the glass or metal edge. In general, again, a beautiful, effective, but completely impractical solution.

A few more words about doors. This is clearly visible in the video. Tesla's front doors now open and close automatically. The car senses when you approach (every time) and opens the door for you. You sit down in the chair, press the brake, and the door closes itself. Cool? Very. But there is a nuance here too. The front doors only have “resistance sensors”, that is, sensors for touching an object. To prevent the door from hitting something every time, sonars are also used at the same time rear doors and the car's autopilot, which helps identify side obstacles. Thanks to them, Model X can easily “see”, say, a neighboring car, but at first it may not notice some pin. However, the doors are also unique in that the accuracy of identifying objects and the algorithm for opening them improves over time. The Tesla service says that in just a couple of weeks the doors will “learn” to open more accurately.

Here's how the front door sensors work:

Like the Model S, the X has two trunks - front and rear. The rear one is ordinary, nothing special, but the front one has become more elongated. It can accommodate not big man! Convenient if you have to transport small people in the trunk.

By the way, in the event of an accident, the front part of the body, which, unlike conventional cars, does not have an engine with many rigid parts, is easily crushed. The engine will not be squeezed into the cabin, since there is no engine. This should save the lives of the driver and passenger.

In general, Model X is the safest of all existing SUVs.

19. Let's take a look at the salon.

20. The first thing that catches your eye is the trim of the seats. Rear end All seats are now finished in glossy black plastic. It looks incredibly beautiful. Again, I don't know how practical this is. It seems to me that children will quickly scratch this plastic with their feet, and it will not look so impressive. Also note that the second row seats recline and there is a third row of two seats! The third row, however, can only accommodate children. In this photo, the third row seats are folded down to form a flat trunk floor. The model also has a “cargo” mode, Cargo Mode, which allows one to automatically fold both back rows seats and turn the space behind the driver into a giant trunk.

Plus, Model X is the first electric car that can tow a trailer! True, for this you need to order additional option Tow Package for $750.

21. The rear has become much more comfortable than in the Model S. Now there is a high ceiling, and even a large person’s head will not rest against anything. In addition, there are now three full seats in the back, rather than two. The rear seats also have adjustable backrests and can be moved back and forth. The headrests on neither seat are adjustable.

22. Again, pay attention to how they are attached rear seats. Straight out of a science fiction movie. You can see the rails on the floor on which these seats move back and forth. Unfortunately, the legs are decorated with plastic rather than chromed metal. I think they will be scratched quickly by feet.

23. Rear passengers now have 2 more USB sockets and cup holders (they extend under the sockets when pressed).

24. If you remember, one of the main drawbacks of the Model S interior was the lack of storage space. In fact, there was nothing in the Model S other than the glove compartment. This error has now been fixed. Three compartments appeared in front: one for small items and charging (where the wire is), another deep one, where you can put additional cup holders, and another one under the monitor. There are also pockets in the front doors, which were not there before.

25. The rest of the interior is very similar to the Model S.

26. The seats have become more comfortable.

27. The steering wheel is exactly the same.

28. The quality of the interior trim is ideal. By the way, Musk at the presentation highly praised the air filter installed in the Model X. It protects not only from ordinary smog, but also from bacteria, viruses and allergens, and compared to conventional cars, the level of protection is hundreds of times higher. The air in this car is as sterile as possible in an urban environment. The Model X even has a "Bioweapon Defense" mode.

29. Unfortunately, inconvenient doors were also transferred from the Model S to the X. Please note that there is nothing for the passenger to hold onto. There are no handles, but the armrest is shallow, and the hand rolls off it. There are no ceiling handles in the car either. That is, only the driver can hold onto the steering wheel. All. This is very strange, because Tesla positions itself as sports car, but what should passengers do when the driver decides to accelerate from 0 to a hundred in 4 seconds and effectively take a turn?

30. In terms of build quality, if you find fault, you can find small mistakes. The door seal does not always fit perfectly; there are strange gaps in the area of the mirrors.

31. Time to refuel... Oh, wrong way!

32. The computer shows the nearest gas stations. We are interested in red...

When Tesla was just being developed, it became clear that there was one problem: there was no infrastructure for electric vehicles, there was nowhere to charge them. There are public charging stations, but they are few and not very powerful. Therefore, Tesla decided to create the infrastructure on its own and is now developing a network of powerful Supercharger charging stations with a capacity of 120 kW. In 40 minutes, it fully charges the Tesla battery (that is, it is about 16 times more powerful than public chargers). In the future, it is planned that you will exchange empty batteries for charged ones in 90 seconds.

Another problem is battery production. The current volume is not enough for mass production of Tesla, and the batteries are expensive. Tesla plans to build a huge Gigafactory, which by 2020 will produce more batteries than are currently produced worldwide. This will reduce the cost of the Tesla battery by at least 30%.

But you can also charge from a regular outlet.

Currently, the Tesla Universal Mobile Connector (charging cable with adapters) is supplied with the car. It can have three sockets:

1. A regular household network, then the car is charged at 13A/220V, i.e. power about 2.8 kW;
2. Single-phase blue socket 26A/220V, i.e. 5.7 kW;
3. Three-phase red socket, 3 phases of 16A each and 220V, total power about 11 kW.

If the car is equipped with optional dual chargers, then it can be charged from the charging station with 3ph currents of 26A and 220V each, for a total power of 17 kW.

How to calculate charging time? With a battery capacity of 85 kWh, the useful capacity is about 82 kWh. That is, we take this figure and divide it by the power of the source - we get the approximate time. Approximate, because the battery has a non-linear charging curve: it charges faster at the beginning, and slower at the end. This is due to the characteristics of LiOn batteries, as well as the fact that at the end the cells are balanced.

33. So, we arrived at the station to charge. Next to it is a Model S. Notice how better car looks good without the black plug in place of the radiator grille. Which is what I wrote about at the beginning.

34.

35. Filled up 210 miles in 30 minutes. All electric filling stations for Tesla are free.

36. Now let's see what's on the computer. It is almost no different from the Model S. Browser, music, navigation, calendar, phone and rear view camera.

37. All control is through the central monitor.

38. Detailed climate settings.

39. Navigation through Google Maps.

40. The screen can be divided into two parts and include a rear view camera, which is convenient to use instead of mirrors.

41. Dashboard is also customizable. Here you can display navigation, energy consumption information, music control and much more. Everything is like the Model S.

42. The car is all hung with sensors that show obstacles all around. Parktronic not only shows the distance to an obstacle with centimeter accuracy, but also draws it. It looks very nice.

43. Like the later Model S, the X has autopilot. This is a very cool thing. The car takes full control. It scans the road, determines which car is going where, determines the markings and keeps the lane. All this is possible at speeds above 20 km/h.

44. Driving like this is a little scary. We drove 50 km on autopilot on the highway. In the city, autopilot is useful in traffic jams. The car does not yet know how to stop at traffic lights, but it can change lanes in a “semi-automatic” mode: the driver only sets the direction by turning on the turn signal, and the car itself changes lanes, taking into account all the blind spots and markings. Through a continuous road, for example, the autopilot will not change lanes.

At the same time, Model X has an active safety system: the autopilot works together with a number of sensors that see obstacles at 360 degrees and can protect the car from a collision even at high speeds. For example, autopilot is capable of completely stopping a Tesla.

45. The autopilot setup menu looks like this. One of its most amazing features is self-learning. Autopilot, when turned on, collects data and sends it to Tesla Motors servers. This information is then taken into account in system updates. With the latest updates, Tesla itself has learned to leave the garage (by first opening the door) and park without a person inside. Elon Musk promises that in a couple of years the car will come to you on request across the continent.

46. Opening and closing doors - either with a handle or through a monitor.

47. Machine settings.

48. As in the Model S, you can create your own profile with settings for each driver.

49. Applications. You can't install new ones yet.

50. Setting up the light.

51. Air suspension.

52. Different driving modes.

53.

54.

55. Tesla X came out much cooler than the S. Unfortunately, not all the errors of the previous model were eliminated and some new ones were added, but overall the car is very cool. Tesla is very similar to iPhone. If you fall in love, then you no longer notice the shortcomings and cannot look at anything else.

56. Future. In the humble opinion of Elon Musk, Model X is best car from ever existing. But he admits that he's not sure if he'll ever release it again. Tesla car, equally crammed with technical innovations.

57. Are you already holding 16 million in your hands and wondering how you can quickly order a new Tesla? In Russia they are sold by Tesla Club. The first X will arrive in Moscow approximately on April 30, and there will be a Russian presentation at the same time.

Elon Musk is, of course, a genius. He not only knows what will happen in the future, but also gives us the opportunity to touch and buy it. I never cease to admire this man.
