HISTORY AvtoVAZ

For the first time, the fact that it was necessary to build a new modern automobile plant in the USSR was discussed in 1966, it was in this year that the history of AvtoVAZ began. At the next congress of the Central Committee of the CPSU, which took place on July 20, it was approved that a new production facility would be built in the city of Togliatti, which would produce the most modern cars. In order for these machines to be competitive in the world market, to technical equipment and training of personnel, the Soviet government decided to connect the Italian automobile concern Fiat, which was friendly in those years.

The new plant began its operation in 1969, it was then that its first labor teams were formed. The first cars left the assembly line a year later. These were cars that were designed on the basis of the Italian car FIAT-124. Below, we will tell you more about this and many other cars that have ever rolled off the AvtoVAZ assembly line.

VAZ 2101

It's four door sedan, which, as we said above, was built on the basis of the Fiat 124. To adapt to Soviet roads, the car has undergone more than 800 changes. So, he was equipped with a more voluminous carbureted engine- 1200 cubic centimeters, plus, the car received a higher ground clearance, as well as its body and wheel system were strengthened.

A little later, on the basis of this car, the so-called series classic cars: VAZ 21011, which received an even larger engine - 1.3 liters, 21013 - an analogue of 21011, but with an engine from VAZ 2101, as well as a special model for the needs of the police: a VAZ 2101-34 car, which was equipped with the most powerful engine in this family.

VAZ 2102

The history of AvtoVAZ and its cooperation with the Italian concern Fiat did not stop at the VAZ 2101 model, just a year after the appearance of this car on the market, a new car appeared: which was a licensed version of the Fiat 124 Familiare.

The main improvement, compared to the VAZ 2101, was the trunk, which was at floor level. This was done in order to facilitate loading and unloading procedures. Unfortunately, due to this refinement, the car had a serious minus: a weak level of sealing of the interior from the rear door, which caused dust to enter the interior, as well as vapors that came out of the gas tank neck.

Another problem of refinement was the increased mass of the car, which required the shock absorbers and suspension to be made more rigid. This, of course, allowed us to maintain an acceptable carrying capacity: up to 250 kilograms with 2 passengers and up to 55 kilograms with five passengers, but made the car very hard to drive.

In 1978, a special model was released: VAZ 21021, which was intended for export. The engine, which was taken from the VAZ 21011 model, as well as the rear luggage glass, which was equipped with a washer and wipers, underwent changes.

Later, for five years, the car was constantly upgraded, but did not change the name. A more reliable ignition system was installed in it, an even more powerful engine, and other, less significant adjustments were made, but all this could no longer save the car and in 1985 it was discontinued.

VAZ 2103

The VAZ 2103 car is a modified version of the VAZ 2101, which was based on the same Fiat 124. It appeared on the market in 1972. The main differences were a more powerful engine: 72 horsepower, and a more spacious interior: the space above the head of passengers and the driver was increased by 15 millimeters. Also, it should be noted that the VAZ 2103 became the first domestic car on which a vacuum booster was installed. brake system, as well as a "sports" panel.

In 1980, this car was equipped with a new carburetor, which made the VAZ 2103 more reliable, but just like in the case of the VAZ 2102, the innovations did not save the model. In 1984, it was discontinued.

VAZ 2104

The history of AvtoVAZ began with the VAZ 2104 car, as official manufacturer station wagon cars. This car was released to replace the VAZ 2102 and was designed to absorb all the best from this car, but leave all its shortcomings in the past. For the first time, this car was released in 1984 and was produced until 2012. During this huge life span for a car, a lot of modifications of this car appeared on the market:

Initially, the car had a bunch of shortcomings (many associate this with an unusual body for designers: a three-door hatchback), which is why it was not very popular on the market, but after a couple of years, most of them were fixed, consumers were presented with three trim levels: “Standard”, "Norma" and "Lux", and also equipped the car with a more powerful engine, which breathed new life into the car, which lasted until 2003.

VAZ 2109

Car VAZ 2109 - five-door hatchback with front wheel drive. It was produced at AvtoVAZ from 1987 to 2004, and after that, with a larger engine of 1.6 liters, it continued to be produced in Ukraine for the domestic market.
Like other AvtoVAZ cars, many modifications of this car were produced, but no critical changes took place, even the change from a carburetor engine to an injection one became typical for its time.

VAZ 21099

The car is the same VAZ 2109, but with a rear overhang increased by 200 millimeters. Even the modifications of these cars came out similar. The only serious difference was the more thoughtful and up-to-date security system of the VAZ 21099, which was the best among domestic cars of that time.

VAZ 2110

The car was presented to the management and the general public five times. The first four times it was not approved, as it looked either featureless or strongly resembled cars from other manufacturers, which would make it difficult to enter foreign markets. Only after specialists from Porsche were involved in the design development in 1988 did the designers manage to create a car that nevertheless went into production and replaced the VAZ 2106 line, which by that time was obsolete.

This was due to the fact that it sold well for export, but it was necessary to strictly comply with environmental standards that often changed in those years. So, “tens” were released, which corresponded to Euro 2, Euro 3, and even Euro 4.

VAZ 2111

This family station wagon, which was released to the market to consistently replace the VAZ 2104, but could not really achieve the desired result. At the same time, under the export name Lada 111, he found considerable popularity among foreign buyers. It was all about a very large trunk, which, depending on the position of the rear seats, had a volume of 490 to 1420 liters.

Like other cars that the history of AvtoVAZ knows, it has come a long way in life, during which more than a dozen modifications of the VAZ 2111 were produced.

VAZ 2113

The VAZ 2113 car became the successor to the AvtoVAZ line of small cars with front-wheel drive in the back of a three-door hatchback. The decision to resume production of such cars was made under pressure from consumers who wanted to see an analogue of the VAZ 2108 on the market.

VAZ 2115

The VAZ 2115 is a four-door front-wheel drive sedan that was put into production as a successor to the market of the previously very popular VAZ 21099.
The designers released two modifications, but unlike previous years, they did not change the name of the car in any way, and also, instead of strengthening the engine, they experimented with installing smaller engines. Today, the company, owned by the Renault-Nissan alliance, produces more than one car model, but four: Renault, Datsun, Nissan and LADA. The main production workshop and the administrative complex are located in a large Russian city with an Italian name - in Togliatti.

It was here that the first workshop for the assembly of LADA cars was built in 1966. The leadership of the USSR, after lengthy discussions, decided to build a domestic automobile plant, the main function of which was the production of inexpensive ones that citizens could purchase for personal use. At that time, the market could offer Russians extremely expensive cars that came from abroad in small batches, which significantly limited the circle of owners. Cars made in Russia had to quickly absorb the high demand of compatriots for relatively affordable cars.

Even before the start of construction of AvtoVAZ, business relations were established with the Fiat concern. According to the concluded agreement, the Italian manufacturer was engaged in the most important elements of the construction: he developed a technical project, provided the necessary equipment, relevant technical documentation, and, in addition, trained the required specialists by his own example. The first AvtoVAZ models, of course, were built on the basis of Fiat.

Construction of an object

At the beginning of 1967, almost every resident of Russia knew about the construction of the largest Komsomol facility - the construction of a plant for the production of domestic cars. It is worth noting the speed with which construction developed day by day. To ensure the construction in an accelerated and extremely compressed time period, almost 850 machine-building plants located in different cities of the Soviet Union, as well as 900 foreign concerns, each of which supplied the necessary equipment.

After 3 years, the first car came off the assembly line of the plant - the Zhiguli, called the VAZ 2101. The model largely copied the design of the Fiat-124. Its main difference was the use of domestic components, which, according to Russian designers, gave the VAZ 2101 800 significant differences. In addition, the car was equipped not with disc, but with drum brakes, had significantly higher ground clearance, suspension and powerful body. All the differences made it possible to make the VAZ 2101 more adapted to the harsh realities of the Russian climate.

History of Russian AvtoVAZ models

The history of the plant begins in 1969, when the initial teams of the plant's workers were formed. The main composition of the workers was represented by young people who took an active part in the construction of the building. Installation of a huge amount of various production equipment was carried out with the help of foreign colleagues. The plant involved employees from firms and companies not only in Italy, but also in Germany, France and England.

March 1 is considered a significant day for the domestic automaker, in 1970 it was on this day that 10 new bodies were produced - the basis for future cars. The main role in this process was played by the welding workshop, after only 1.5 months, on April 19 of the same year, the first VAZ 2101 cars were produced.

The history of the models of the Volga Automobile Plant begins with the Zhiguli car, the ancestor of the VAZ 2101. The car had 5 seats for passengers (including the driver). The final weight of the VAZ 2101 was 945 kg. This model subsequently became the basis on which the entire family of the “classic” category was created. Over the entire history of the plant, 2,700,000 models have been produced.

During its existence, the VAZ 2101 has undergone many modifications:

  • VAZ 21011, although it had a distinctive design and engine, with a volume of 1.3 liters;
  • VAZ 21013 - an analogue of the VAZ 21011, equipped with a model 2101 power unit;
  • VAZ 21016 was equipped with the same engine as model 21011, but resembled 2101 in external characteristics;
  • VAZ 21018 and 21019 had uncharacteristic rotary power units, in addition, for some time the production of a large number of export options with right-hand drive was launched;
  • VAZ 2101-94, which was designed for the needs of the Soviet police, was equipped with a 2103 engine.

The history of the creation of AvtoVAZ directly depends on the Italian concern Fiat, apparently, this led to the creation of the 2102 model, which became the full licensed version of the foreign car Fiat 124 Familiare. VAZ 2102 first appeared on the Russian market in 1971.

The updated car reminded many of the equipment of the basic version of the 2101 sedan. The dashboard and the driver's seat remained without significant changes. To simplify the loading and unloading of things in the luggage compartment, the elongated edge of the door, reaching the bumper, allowed. The gasoline power unit had a return of 64 hp. from. and worked on the AI-93. Since 1978, a modification of the previous model, the VAZ-21021, began to be produced, which was equipped with a four-cylinder engine from model 21011. Its main purpose is to satisfy exports. The car sent for sale abroad was equipped with a windshield wiper and a device for washing the windows of the fifth cargo door, in addition, the seats had headrests.

The history of models, which began with the Fiat 124, which became the prototype not only of the VAZ 2101 model, but also in many respects served as the basic basis for the VAZ 2103, began with the signing of an agreement to provide a Russian automaker with a technical design of facilities with full documentation for the creation of two base cars. The first of them had to meet the category "norm", and the other - "luxury".

At first, there were problems at the plant that did not allow the start of a full-fledged production of “triples”, in particular, the creation of parts for decorating the interior of a car was not established, which is why new model it was temporarily completed with salon 2101 and bore the index B in the name, denoting temporary production. The basic version of the car had a power unit with a return of 72 liters. s., reached acceleration to 100 km / h in just 15 s.

A vacuum brake booster appeared under the hood of 2103, and the dashboard acquired a “sporty” interface. Significantly increased the space from the seat to the ceiling, it amounted to 86 cm.

The main distinguishing feature of the fourth AvtoVAZ model is a tangible update of the previous version of the Zhiguli, which made it possible to create a rear-wheel drive station wagon. Established since 1984, the 2104 issue was focused on creating such conditions that contributed to the maximum reduction in the cost of producing cars and at the same time increased consumer demand.

First of all, the roof of the body has undergone changes, its significant elongation contributed to the placement of an additional trunk. The back door of the station wagon opened up, the driver could heat the rear windows and use the built-in wiper. VAZ 2102 is a licensed version of the Fiat 124 Familiare, with numerous differences similar to the base model VAZ-2101. In addition, some cars left the assembly line with pre-installed anti-theft system, electric door locks and power windows. The appearance of the lining of the rear side windows, the steering wheel, etc. also changed.
Obvious advantages and advantages of the car are typical for all models of the Sputnik / Samara family: high dynamic and high-speed qualities, good handling and stability on various types of roads, strong bumpers. There are also significant drawbacks: worse, compared to the "classic", patency, vulnerability of the engine crankcase and oil filter, reduced maintainability relative to previous VAZ models, rattling interior trim made of cheap hard plastic, poor ergonomics of the pedal assembly, etc.
Thanks to the layout with a transverse arrangement of the power unit and front-wheel drive, this car has become more compact and lighter than the classic Zhiguli. In addition, more efficient use of space in the car, increased directional stability and passability of the car on roads with slippery surfaces, skids due to wheel slip are excluded, a relatively high level of passive safety is ensured in case of a frontal impact.
Compared to the previous (rear-wheel drive) VAZ models, the Sputnik cabin is 60 mm longer (although the overall length of the car has been reduced by 120 mm), the size of the tunnel on the floor has decreased as a result of the transition to a new layout. Dimensions (not counting the height) have not changed, but thanks to the curved side windows, the internal width of the cabin at shoulder level has significantly increased. Reducing the height of the body led to a slight decrease in the convenience of getting into the car, and the pedal assembly turned out to be not very convenient due to the pedals being too close to each other. The luggage compartment is separated from the passenger compartment by a folding shelf that rises when the tailgate is opened. The rear seats can be folded down to carry a larger load.
The heating and ventilation system provides air supply simultaneously to several points of the passenger compartment and ensures uniform heating of the entire volume of the passenger compartment and windows. The front anatomical seats with head restraints significantly improved comfort. With the longitudinal movement of the seat, the cushion simultaneously rises and rotates relative to the horizontal. The car requires less corrective steering movements, allowing faster and safer cornering, especially on slippery roads. The overall reduction in the mass of the VAZ-2109 is ensured by the use of a more rational layout and the widespread use of aluminum for the radiator and other parts, as well as plastics (about 80 kg). Reduced air resistance losses and fuel consumption. The system of built-in sensors signals a drop in the level of brake fluid, dangerous wear of the brake linings, a tightened parking brake, a drop in oil pressure, and a discharge of the battery. The appearance of the car is peculiar due to the wedge-shaped (“chisel”) shape of a two-volume body with curved side windows and a minimum number of chrome-plated decorative elements. The VAZ-2109 is characterized by large angles of inclination of the windshield and rear windows, pronounced molded edges of the wheel openings, block headlights, the outer surface of which, as it were, merges into the shaping surface of the body. Compared to foreign counterparts, there is a lower body height, which gives it greater sportiness to the detriment of comfort and ease of landing.
VAZ-2109 has two doors on each side, which makes it easier for passengers to board and exit compared to the two-door version; the central pillar separating the doors is shifted forward, due to which the distance between the pillar and the rear seat cushion has increased; the position of the upper attachment points of the seat belts has also changed and they are less restrictive when traveling.
For the VAZ-2109 and its modifications, the production of plastic gas tanks has been mastered. Not inferior in strength to metal ones, plastic containers are lighter, more technologically advanced and safer. In the event of a fire, a metal gas tank usually explodes. The plastic one catches fire, swells, burns out, etc., but usually does not cause an explosion.

The first layout 2110 appeared in 1983! The car was named VAZ-2112 - it was a sedan that suspiciously resembled the Opel and Ford models of those years (Ascona and Rekord). The project was not approved and sent to the archive.
In 1984, a new prototype for the VAZ-2110 was created, which was shown to the management. The car was faceless, even against the background of their domestic counterparts, and also died before being born.
In 1985, at the Volga Automobile Plant, the development of a new car VAZ-21099 of the Samara family began. At the same time, work began again on the front-wheel drive VAZ-2110, which was supposed to become the flagship of the VAZ lineup.
During the design process, several prototypes were created. Their working names were "100", "200", "300". The first two soon left the job, as they did not contribute anything new. Around 1987, she went to the work of "300". Porsche specialists took part in the work on this model (as well as in the design of the VAZ-2108, thanks to which it turned out to be very successful in terms of handling).
In October 1988, at the AutoDesign 88 exhibition, a rear-wheel drive sedan VAZ 2110 was presented, which was created by designer M. Demidov. The machine was supposed to replace the 2106 family.
There is a version that the Moskvich-2143 Yauza car served as a prototype for the serial VAZ-2110. This unofficial statement is based on the external similarity of design solutions.

Currently, the carburetor engine has given way under the hood to a new generation of engines with distributed fuel injection and electronic control.
The model with an 8-valve 79-horsepower engine with a working volume of 1.5 liters with distributed fuel injection has the VAZ 21102 index. Such an engine provides sufficient power (56 kW) and torque (118 Nm), with moderate fuel consumption. The maximum speed of such a car reaches 170 km / h, and acceleration to "hundreds" takes 14 seconds. Cars with such an engine, due to its high elasticity and traction, are especially good when traveling in heavy urban traffic.
For more active drivers, a 16-valve version with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine was developed based on this engine. with a capacity of 94 hp, with a twin-shaft cylinder head, providing increased performance in terms of power (69 kW) and torque (130 Nm), allowing the car to have improved dynamic qualities. A car equipped with such an engine has the VAZ 21103 index, the maximum speed is already 185 km / h, and acceleration to “hundreds” takes only 12.5 seconds. These modifications on the roads are becoming more and more common, as well as the 2-liter 150-horsepower versions of the VAZ-21106 CTi are quite economical, expressive and expensive. No wonder, because the Opel X20XEV engine with a twin-shaft 16-valve cylinder head and a point injection system allows you to accelerate to 205 km / h. With it, the hundred-kilometer barrier is overcome in just 9.5 seconds. There is also a combat 240-horsepower (!) VAZ-21107 "Rally" 2.0 V16 with a special tubular safety cage built into the body. Its maximum speed is 220 km/h, and the acceleration time to 100 km/h takes only 7 seconds! But they make it piece by piece, only by order of athletes, but it costs - like foreign rally cars: expensive (22 thousand dollars). There are also all-wheel drive versions of the "dozens" of a sports or all-terrain orientation, but they are either experimental or small-scale, and therefore expensive.
Modern interior design (which is still not as neat as foreign counterparts), good aerodynamics, roomy luggage compartment(480 l) with wide transformation possibilities (a hatch in the rear seat and a trunk lid reaching the bumper allow you to carry long loads), a high degree of maintainability - all this is in favor of the VAZ-2110.
The front-wheel drive "tenth" family from Tolyatti, designed from a sheet, is, of course, a new word in the domestic automotive industry. Compared to previous VAZ models, the softness, smoothness and stability of the ride have increased (for which I had to pay with more “cottoniness” of the steering, which, however, is acceptable for a higher class, which included the “ten”). The volume of their luggage compartment (with a total carrying capacity of 500 kg) varies from 490 to 1420 liters. This is possible due to the fact that the rear seats, if necessary, can be folded so as to obtain a flat horizontal floor, and the backrest, as on imported counterparts, can be expanded in a ratio of 1:2, and then it is convenient to transport both bulky cargo and passengers. Additionally, 50 kg of cargo can be placed on the roof rack.
The cabin can easily accommodate 5 people. Landing on the driver's seat makes it equally comfortable to drive a car for both miniature women and solid men of high stature (188 cm).

VAZ-2111 is available in three versions - the base 2111 with an injection engine, 21111 with a carburetor engine, and 21113 with a sixteen-valve engine and 14 inch wheels. Perhaps because of this, the initial terms for the development of the VAZ-2113 (2002) were repeatedly revised.
A three-door five-seat hatchback of the SAMARA-2 family - VAZ-2113, based on the LADA 2108 car, appeared in serial production only in the fall of 2004. The model differs from its predecessors (VAZ-2108) in the front part of the body with original headlights, a modified shape of the hood and front fenders. The interior of the cabin was also updated, a new instrument panel appeared, all this creates the perception of the upgraded car as a new model.
The car is equipped with a 1.5-liter injection power unit that complies with Euro-2 standards. Since 2007, it has been produced with a 1.6 liter engine that meets Euro-3 standards.
The main engine for the Samara-2 family gradually became the 8-valve 1.5-liter VAZ-2111 engine with a distributed injection system, although the first batches of the VAZ-2115 were equipped mainly with the 21083 carburetor engine, but the 16-valve 2112 on "Samara-2" was never officially set.
VAZ-2113 is supplied in three configurations: "standard", "norm" and "luxury". The latter includes an on-board computer, rear seat head restraints, anti-glare rear mirrors, athermal glass, two-tone horns and fog lights.

VAZ 2114, hatchback 5 doors

VAZ-2114 "Lada 2114" - a five-door hatchback of the Volga Automobile Plant, created on the basis of the VAZ 2109 car. It was created in the mid-90s as part of the development of the Samara-2 family. This car is a modified VAZ-21093 with a front part from the well-known VAZ-2115 model (optics, radiator grille, front spoiler) and with a slightly modified design of the rear part of the body (the rear bumper was changed, an additional brake light was installed). Bumpers are painted in body color, moldings and sill fairings are installed on the sides of the body. The first copies of the VAZ 2114 were assembled on the factory conveyor in 2000, in 2001 they assembled a pilot batch of 50 cars. Serial production of the car began in April 2003.
The aerodynamics of the VAZ-2114 is similar to the VAZ-2115, in which Cx has slightly decreased, the lifting force has decreased and its distribution along the axes has noticeably improved. VAZ-2115 / Lada Samara - a four-door front-wheel drive sedan developed by the Volga Automobile Plant).
The updated VAZ-2115 sedan was created as part of the Samara-2 project, work on which began in the early 90s. Moreover, thinking primarily about the new appearance of front-wheel drive cars, Togliatti did not forget about aerodynamics. Therefore, in 1993, the VAZ design team arrived at the Dmitrovsky auto training ground - the VAZ people decided to work on the style of the updated cars right in the wind tunnel!
We started by removing standard bumpers from ordinary VAZ-21093 and VAZ-21099 cars, and in their place they fitted new ones that were fashioned from plasticine. The designers noticeably rounded the corners of the plasticine bumpers, and along the lower edge of the side doors they placed developed moldings-thresholds, “flowing” onto the edges of the wings. Using the same technology, a new, slightly longer and sharper “muzzle” was made. Complements the appearance of a small wing on the trunk lid.
After several wind tunnel sessions, during which the shape of all parts was optimized, the designers came up with the final version of the plasticine "armor". And we went back to Tolyatti. And a few months later, the "live" Samara-2, embodied in metal and plastic, was brought to Dmitrov! These were the VAZ-2113 and VAZ-2114 hatchbacks - an alternative to the "eights" and "nines" - and the VAZ-2115 sedan, which was supposed to replace the "ninety-ninth" model. On the whole, Togliatti residents were satisfied with the results of blowing out cars and were already going to prepare Samara-2 for serial production. It was 1994.
Then came the crisis. The main forces and resources at the plant were thrown into finishing work on the "top ten", and the financing of the Samara-2 project was severely curtailed. And as a result, out of three cars, it was decided to bring only the VAZ-2115 to mass production so far. This took almost two years. Only in 1996, the "fifteenth" began to be produced in small batches in the pilot production of VAZ. Since 2001, assembly has also begun on the factory conveyor.
In comparison with its predecessor (VAZ-21099) - VAZ 2115 lengthened by 225 mm. The appearance of the car has noticeably changed - the front and rear parts have been changed, the interior has been updated, while the sidewalls, doors and roof have remained the same. The new model features a front end with original headlights, a reshaped hood and front fenders, new rear lights with an insert between them, body-colored bumpers, a trunk spoiler with an additional brake light, door moldings, sill fairings, a new trunk lid with floor level connector. New efficient lighting equipment is provided.
A number of design solutions were borrowed from the "tenth" VAZ family - an adjustable steering column, upper attachment points for the front seat belts, and a combination of instruments. The back number of the car, as on the "top ten", is located on the bumper.
The car is equipped with 1.5 and 1.6 - liter petrol engines. Initially, modifications with a carburetor engine were produced. But in 2001, a modification came out with an engine with distributed fuel injection. To improve durability and reduce noise on Idling a new clutch disc with an idle damper is provided.
Display block onboard system control carries information about the closing of door locks, unfastened seat belts, wear limit of brake pads, left ignition key, oil level, cooling and washer fluids. The applied new design of the heater provides efficient heating of the passenger compartment.

VAZ 2121 Niva


VAZ-2121 is a completely original, purely VAZ design, entirely developed by factory engineers. The car was born in those distant years, as they say, in the same breath. In 1972, the first two "crocodiles" quickly proved their right to a worthy place under the sun.
The very next year, the car acquired a metal roof and its own, which soon became famous, name - "Niva". The case progressed so quickly that in January 1974 the car was submitted for state testing. And in the hot sands of Turkmenistan, and in the sky-high heights of the Pamirs (with a height of passes up to 4600 m), the car turned out to be at home.
The compact SUV VAZ-2121 "Niva" with a load-bearing body is rightfully considered the most original and successful development of the domestic automotive industry. In April 1977, the Niva made a real sensation on the world market with a combination of passenger comfort and high cross-country ability, unique for its time, at a more than competitive price (though only outside the USSR). "Niva" had practically no analogues in the practice of the world automotive industry! In 1980, the car "VAZ-2121? awarded the gold medal of the 53rd International Fair in Poznań.
No other Russian passenger car has come close to such success in the international arena. Autoexport received applications from all over the world. There were also two special export versions: VAZ-21211 with a 1.3-liter engine (for countries with expensive fuel and high taxes on engine size) and VAZ-21212 with right-hand drive. The latter, by the way, was in very good demand in England. Export volumes grew rapidly. In the late 1980s - early 1990s. it sometimes exceeded 50% of the output. Over the years of production, out of more than one and a half million cars produced, more than 500 thousand were exported to more than 100 countries.
"Niva" - a cross-country vehicle with a permanent non-switchable drive of all wheels (for off-road vehicles before the "Niva" only "Range Rover" had this) with an interaxle locking differential and a transfer case with a lowering row. At the same time, the power unit was taken from the mass model of the Zhiguli VAZ-2106, and the transfer case was connected to the gearbox with an intermediate cardan shaft.
Many foreign tuning companies offered successful plastic body kits and other types of fine-tuning for the Niva, for example, by no means superfluous, additional sound insulation. Some even made pickups based on it. By the way, since the 90s, Niva has been one of the favorite objects for Russian tuning shops. By design, the VAZ-2121 was maximally unified with the Zhiguli (in terms of the power unit and many interior elements - with the VAZ-2106 model), but this turned out to be not entirely justified, especially with regard to a separate transfer box, connected to the standard "Zhiguli" gearbox with a short cardan shaft. In the absence of mutual balance of these units, the transmission is terribly noisy. This knot became the "Achilles' heel" of the model.
In the 90s, with the end of the shortage of a number of spare parts, the Niva became the most affordable domestic SUV. The plant has the opportunity to create on the basis of the Niva various modifications in demand by the market, as well as to modernize the base model.
So, in 1993, a transitional version of the VAZ-21219 appeared with an old body and a more powerful and high-torque 1.7-liter carburetor engine "21213" equipped with a contactless ignition system. The gearbox was equipped with an overdrive 5th gear (although it was not installed on all cars), the gear ratios of the main pairs were changed from 4.3 to 4.1 and 3.9, which reduced fuel consumption. In addition, between the “razdatka” and the main gearbox, they began to install a shaft with a CV joint from the “Oka”, which somewhat reduced noise and vibration.
As a result of modernization in 1993, a new model "Taiga" was born, which was assigned the index "VAZ-21213". This is a four-seater off-road passenger car with permanent non-switchable all-wheel drive. With their predecessor "Niva" these models look like twin sisters. VAZ-21213 received a modernized body with a third door reaching the bumper (loading something into the luggage compartment has become much easier) and square lights instead of rectangular ones from the "six". The updated interior has a modern instrument panel of the "2108" type, as well as modified front seats. It's hard to believe that there are 16 years between these modifications. During these years, the plant did not make almost any changes to the design of 2121.
Another intermediate version with an old 1.6-liter engine was designated as VAZ-21217, and an export version with a Peugeot 1.9-liter diesel engine was designated 21215. Even such a half-hearted modernization allowed the Niva to successfully survive until the 21st century. But time takes its toll and Niva meets modern passive safety requirements with difficulty, however, the export version was still able to be brought up to EURO III standards for safety and emissions of harmful substances. By the way, landing and disembarking on the fully foldable rear seat is very difficult, and the trunk is frankly too small for a multi-purpose vehicle.
In the 90s, a version 21214-36 was produced for export with an engine equipped with central injection and a catalytic converter. Then the motor was upgraded for distributed injection and began to be delivered to the domestic market (without a converter).
Since 1995, the Togliatti company PSA "Bronto" has been making small series on the basis of the "Niva" the cash-in-transit armored car VAZ-212182 "Fors" extended by 300 mm along the base and its "civilian" version of the VAZ-212180 "Fora". These models are distinguished by comfort and smoothness of the ride with almost the same cross-country ability and maneuverability. Even longer (by 500 mm) five-door station wagons and pickups based on the Niva are made by OPP VAZ and several small Togliatti firms (see VAZ-2131).
"Niva" is not designed for constant off-road driving, and at the same time it is not very convenient for urban use due to increased consumption fuel, "heavy" steering (without hydraulic booster) and noisy transmission. However, its competitive price, the relative cheapness of spare parts and ease of repair attract attention even to used copies of the Niva.
At one time, the fate of the Niva was in doubt in connection with the organization of the joint venture GM-AVTOVAZ for the production of the Chevrolet Niva. By agreement with the Americans, the production of the old model was to be stopped by 2006, but in connection with the revision of the agreement, AvtoVAZ now has the opportunity to produce Lada Niva (since 2005 it has been officially called Niva). In addition, its CKD kits have been supplied to the new assembly plant"AZIA AVTO" to Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan), to the Ukrainian "LuAZ" and several assembly plants in South America.
VAZ-2121-21214 (Lada Niva) - one of the most popular on domestic market SUVs, even new cars have practically no competitors in terms of price + quality + cross-country ability, and moderately used ones (from one to three years) are generally out of competition. All the specific problems of this model are well known to repairmen (although they are not always successfully treated), spare parts are quite cheap and common no less than for the Zhiguli. When buying, you must carefully inspect the body and chassis for intensive use. If the car was often used off-road or as a tractor, it is better to refuse such a purchase. Other things being equal, it is better to choose a car with a less noisy “razdatka”.

VAZ-21212 - Modification of Niva VAZ 2121 with right-hand drive. It was made in very small batches for England to compete with the Rovers there.
VAZ-21213 "Taiga" - different from basic modification a more powerful 1.7 liter engine that adapts better to load changes, a Solex carburetor coupled with a contactless ignition system (both reduce fuel consumption), an aluminum radiator, a different shape of taillights, a different shape of a tailgate and much more . VAZ-212180 "Handicap" - A version of the conveyor "Niva" extended by 300 millimeters. The growth was due to the increased size of doors and, accordingly, doorways. In this regard, "eight" hinges are installed on the doors. The enlarged interior made it possible to install a three-seater rear seat, slightly pushing it forward from the tightness of the wheel arches. Thanks to this, the trunk here is noticeably larger than that of the VAZ 21213. The roof in the rear part of the body is raised due to the plastic “snap”, which allows the rear passengers to feel more at ease. IN standard equipment included automatic system fire extinguisher installed in the engine compartment. The wheels on this model are initially light-alloy from the Togliatti company "Slik" with tires "Nokia HRC". They are larger than the usual standard ones, so the spare wheel moved to back door, although attached to the rear bumper. This greatly reduced visibility, especially with rear-view mirrors from the classics. As an additional option, a power steering, air conditioning, a plastic bumper bar in front of the radiator grill are offered. The interior is standard, from 21213, but the rear seat is from VAZ 2107. VAZ-212182 "Force" - Issues of booking the "Niva" were worked out on the first such machines with the prefix "B", created from the VAZ 2121. These are no longer produced today. The armored version of the VAZ-21218 is primarily intended for servicing banks and collectors. Armor and special laminated glass are able to protect the driver and passengers of the car from Kalashnikov bullets of 5.45 and 7.62 mm caliber. The thickness of the steel sheet is 4.5 mm, and the special bulletproof glass is 28 mm. The side doors have reinforced hinges, additional locks and loopholes for firing back. VAZ-212183 - A beach SUV with a Lando or Landole type body (a body with an opening roof over the rear seat) was created on the basis of the VAZ-21218. The absence of a part of the roof and doors on the car made it necessary to reinforce the body with the original "strapping" of pipes, on which, if necessary, you can pull a light awning or attach brackets for transporting water skis, surfers, boats and other beach utensils. True, to disperse the Chevrolet Niva faster than 135 km / h is not an easy task. But it allows you to keep an average of 100-110 kilometers and move comfortably from point A to point B. The brake system has been seriously modernized, including the design of the master cylinder and brake booster. The changes affected the clutch and gearbox, in which the bearings, the gearshift mechanism, as well as all gaskets and seals were replaced.
