Sales of the updated Lexus NX started on our market in November last year, however, the representative office of the company arranged a large-scale acquaintance of Russian journalists with the crossover only this spring. Perhaps this was done in order to combine the test drive of the new NX with the finals of the Lexus Design Award, which the Japanese organized back in 2013.

The Lexus Design Award is an annual creative competition that seeks ideas that can contribute to a better future. But back to the hero of our material. How has the Lexus NX changed after restyling? Designers Japanese company worked on the appearance of the crossover: the original spindle-shaped radiator grille received a new design - now the car looks more like its older brothers in the face of RX and LX. To give the crossover a more aggressive look, the spacing between the bars below the centerline of the grille has been increased. Also, the car received new angular air intakes and a modified front bumper. LED headlights in NX now support adaptive control system high beam, and the direction indicators from serial connection LEDs appeared both front and rear.

At the stern, not only the turn signals have changed: the bumper has somewhat changed its shape, and the new lamp blocks are distinguished by an oblong shape and black edging. It cannot be said that restyling has radically changed the appearance of the crossover. However, this was not required. The facelift slightly refreshed the already modern design of the Lexus NX. For fans European cars it is unlikely to please, but fans of the "Japanese" should like it, as well as young people in general.

Restyling Lexus NX brought some changes in the cabin. So, the diagonal of the display of the multimedia system has grown: simpler configurations have received an 8-inch screen, and top-end crossovers are equipped with a display with a diagonal of 10.3 inches. In addition, the appearance of the climate control unit has changed: the main parameters can be adjusted using four pretty toggle switches.

The area of ​​​​the touchpad responsible for managing the multimedia system has slightly increased. Unfortunately, you still can’t call it convenient - input devices in competitors from the German trio are noticeably more thoughtful.

The dimensions of the compartment for wireless charging of smartphones have also increased, so even very large devices should fit there.

The rest of the interior remained unchanged. Before us is the same solid interior, distinguished by the use of materials that are pleasant to the touch and quality finish. There were also some interesting little things: for example, a mirror is built into the lid of one of the compartments on the central tunnel on the reverse side - the girls will surely appreciate such a surprise.

Lexus NX buyers can now choose from light brown or beige finishes. I must say that the crossover with a bright interior looks much richer. And even veneer inserts look appropriate here.

Passengers on the second row will appreciate the spaciousness: there is plenty of legroom here. But of the amenities at the rear, the Lexus NX can only offer an armrest, air ducts and heated seats.

The electric drive of the fifth door is supplemented by a proximity sensor: just wave your foot under the rear bumper and the trunk will open automatically. Volume luggage compartment- 500 liters (475 liters for a hybrid), and the trunk itself pleases with the correct forms, but upsets with a rather large loading height. The second row seats fold in a ratio of 60:40, but do not form a flat floor.

Depending on the configuration, the Lexus NX can be equipped with an 8- or 10.3-inch screen on the center console. The screen is not touch, you need to control it with the touchpad, which takes some getting used to. The interface is familiar from the car. The elongated shape of the display allows you to use its area for two tasks at the same time: for example, you can display a music player in one zone, and use the second to control the performance of the car.

⇡ On the road

The route of our test drive passed through picturesque places in the Alps - we started in Milan and finished in Zurich. Unfortunately, there were no off-road sections on the way, so it was not possible to check the behavior of crossovers on the road. However, it is unlikely that the owners of compact Lexus often leave asphalt roads.

Speaking about potential buyers of new products, representatives Lexus shared their expectations. According to their calculations, for many of the future owners of the NX will be the first premium car. These are people aged 25-35 who have started earning enough to afford to buy their first premium brand car. For them, of course, the price will be a priority factor when choosing. After all, the NX is close in size to cars such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, but it costs noticeably less, at least if you compare the initial versions.

Although before buying a Lexus NX200, you should think hard. If you need a car for comfortable movement around the city, then everything is fine. But about the pleasure of driving, from acceleration and overtaking should be forgotten. The 150-horsepower engine is frankly weak for a crossover weighing under 2 tons. More than 12 seconds to 100 km / h is a very, very long time. The lack of dynamics is felt on any country road.

After the 2-liter NX on the CVT, the version with a turbo engine and an automatic is perceived completely differently. Still, 5 seconds difference in acceleration time to 100 km / h is a whole abyss. The NX300 AWD gives the impression of a complete car with no noticeable flaws. Due to the increased rigidity of the body, the crossover steers well - you can get a hefty dose of adrenaline by blasting through narrow mountain alpine serpentines with a breeze. In conditions of intense acceleration and braking, the bottleneck in the bundle is a 6-speed automatic - it's a pity that Lexus did not decide to equip restyled cars with a new 8-speed automatic, which relies on the older RX model.

But the more expensive hybrid NX300H somehow did not impress. Yes, its fuel consumption is, of course, somewhat lower than that of a conventional 300, but it will not be possible to save much. More than 200 thousand overpayments for technically more complicated car, on a variator and with a reduced trunk, it is unlikely that a hybrid crossover will be popular in Russia. But in Europe, with local fuel prices and enthusiasm for "green" technologies, the hybrid will certainly have its customers.

Lexus fans will find almost everything they love about the Japanese brand in the new NX. Yes, the suspension of the crossover has become a little stiffer, but it is still very comfortable on European roads. Quality materials in the interior are not only pleasing to the eye, but also pleasant to the touch. The Lexus NX will certainly be popular among the fair sex - most will be quite satisfied with the NX200 version, and the main arguments for buying will be a high seating position, spaciousness on the second row, bright appearance and premium status.

Although the size of the Lexus NX, as I said, is close to the crossovers of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, the price is closer to the more compact representatives of the German trio. For example, the base Audi Q3 with a 1.4 TSI engine and a robot costs 2.09 million rubles, which is close to the cost of the initial NX. At the same time, the German will be noticeably more dynamic, but it will not even have climate control, not to mention the leather interior and other options.

The base BMW X2 is also priced at the same 2 million, which will also be very poorly equipped for this money. Tandem robotic box and a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 140 forces is able to accelerate the crossover to hundreds in 9.6 seconds.

The simplest Jaguar E-Pace is noticeably more expensive - more than 2.5 million rubles. For this amount, you can become the owner of an all-wheel drive crossover with a 9-speed automatic and a 2-liter diesel engine.

Restyling of the popular compact crossover Lexus NX was definitely a success: the car began to look brighter, received new systems active safety, it has several new options. At the same time, it has risen in price compared to its predecessor quite slightly - and as a result, it is offered on our market much cheaper than commensurate crossovers of other premium brands. The combination of a reasonable price and the familiar reliability of Lexus cars will allow the new product to take a significant market share in the segment of premium compact crossovers.

The fact that the Lexus NX is a potential sales leader in the class of compact crossovers became clear more than two years ago, when it flashed under the guns of photo and video cameras at the stand of the Moscow International Motor Show in the fall of 2014. Since then, the NX has already managed to become the best-selling car in the class of compact premium crossovers, and we have tested the most expensive hybrid version of the NX 300h and the base naturally aspirated NX 200 with a power plant from the direct relative of the Toyota RAV4. And now the turn of the most interesting modification of the NX 200t has come, under the hood of which there is a 2.0-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 238 hp. and a traditional six-speed automatic.

From the outside, the version with the NX 200t turbo engine can be distinguished from the other two by two nozzles exhaust system gaping from under rear bumper. On the NX 200 and NX 300h they are hidden.

The Lexus NX was doomed to success at the behest of the designers. Looking at the NX, it seems that before coming to Lexus, chief designer Nobuyuki Tomatsu learned the art of origami for years before channeling his creative impulses into automotive design.

Outside, Lexus beckons with its forms. Almost every body part has a unique relief, the signature trapezoidal grille reminds of belonging to the brand, and the sharp-angled front and rear optics add even more spice to the already bright image of the NX. Even after two years, the car still looks fashionable and relevant.

As for the constant talk about the technical similarities between the NX and Toyota RAV4, in my opinion this is the lot of envious people. In a modern car, a structure without unification is nowhere, so the use of one architecture and common structural elements has long been familiar. The relationship between NX and RAV4 is proved only by the dry numbers of the width (1845 mm) of the wheelbase (2660 mm). But we have already talked about trim levels and other things in past NX tests. Now the main role in the NX 200t is played by power point led by a turbo engine. It was not for nothing that the fall before last, when I sat down to write the text of the test of the base NX 200, I began with the words, — “It's good when there are 238 hp under the hood.” We will talk about this in the next part.

Part 2: hot heart

We reveal the character of the 238-horsepower Lexus NX, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo engine and automatic transmission.

In terms of transmission, it is the NX 200t version that is the most attractive. After all, it is the only one that is equipped with a traditional hydromechanical machine, and not a variator.

Before meeting Lexus' first-ever turbocharged engine, I had already gotten to know the base naturally aspirated and hybrid versions of the NX. The first with a capacity of 150 hp. does not shine with dynamics, and the hybrid is traditionally expensive, so in my opinion it is the NX 200t with a turbo engine that is the most optimal modification for a Japanese crossover. Moreover, unlike the other two, where the variator plays the role of transmission, it is equipped with a traditional hydromechanical "automatic".

The 8AR-FTS engine with a working volume of 1998 cm3 is one of the latest developments of Japanese engineers from the Toyota concern. Already now it is equipped with the NX and RX crossovers, as well as the IS sedan, but soon it will appear under the hood of most models related to Lexus brand. The 2.0-liter "four" is equipped with a system direct injection fuel, a twin scroll turbocharger and a dual VVT-iW variable valve timing mechanism, which allows the engine to operate both in the Otto cycle and in the Atkinson cycle, which contributes to fuel economy.

The maximum power is 238 hp, and the peak torque, reaching 350 Nm, is available in the range from 1650 to 4000 rpm. At the same time, the declared acceleration time to 100 km / h is 7.2 seconds, and the average fuel consumption during the test was kept within 10-11 liters per 100 km.

In the main disadvantages of the Lexus NX, I would write down poor sound insulation compared to older models and indistinct power steering settings, which is too isolating the sensations from reality. On the plus side - bright appearance, high-quality interior and a tandem of a turbo engine with a gun.

The behavior of this engine is easy to confuse with a powerful aspirated. There is no tangible turbo pickup, no noticeable dips at the start. Only assertive smooth acceleration to the synthetic accompaniment of a symposer imitating the sound of an engine. It is a pity that the real voice of the engine in the cabin is almost inaudible even on high revs, and its tuned voice acting does not always fall in time with divisions on the tachometer dial.

The rest of the power unit NX 200t leaves only pleasant impressions. It accelerates well, and the mutual understanding of the engine and gearbox can only be envied. Of the minuses - subtle delays when switching the six-speed automatic transmission to lower speeds. But in city traffic you can’t find fault with automatic transmission. The transmission operates crisply, smoothly and softly, as befits most Lexus models.

Schematically, the NX and RAV4 suspensions are identical (McPherson strut front and multi-link rear), but that's where the similarities end. All the elements used in the NX design have received their own settings, and the suspension geometry has been slightly changed.

NX does not deprive passengers of comfort, but the compact crossover cannot boast of Lexus' signature velvet ride, like older models, when the car literally soars on the road. This is partly due to rigid suspension, noticing more bumps, in part - soundproofing, letting the rumble from the tires into the cabin. NX shakes even on small potholes and zealously meets pits with sharp edges. At the same time, the comfort level of the compact crossover is still quite high, and on good coverage in front of more expensive models, it is only given out by weaker sound insulation.

Despite the fact that, compared to Toyota, the electric power steering settings were made sharper, and with their bright appearance and powerful motor NX 200t unambiguously hints at a perky character, there is no desire to chess in a stream or fight to storm suburban chicanes on a Lexus. Personally, EnX inspires me more on quiet ride. He is not a bully and not a provocateur. You roll yourself to the juicy sound of the premium Mark Levinson audio system and the world around ceases to exist. And even though there is neither sharpness nor a bright emotional character, the traffic jam behind the wheel of a Lexus NX after a hard day's work no longer seems so tiring, and being in stylish interior filled with the noble smell of expensive leather and high-quality finishing materials, you can rest your body and soul.

Part 3: Recipe for Success

We find out which Lexus quality NX has allowed it to become the undisputed bestseller in its class so quickly, as well as how much insurance and maintenance costs.

In the first two parts of the long Lexus test NX 200t, I talked about a modern stylish design that has not lost its relevance, as well as a pleasant tandem of a powerful two-liter turbo engine and a hydromechanical “automatic”. Both of these moments played a significant role in the successful sales of the crossover in Russia, although, by the way, the most affordable modification of the NX 200 with a modest 150-horsepower aspirated and CVT, which was borrowed from the Toyota RAV4, remains the most popular with us.

But often the female audience, which for the most part are EnX customers, does not matter at all what engine and transmission are located under the hood. In addition to the price, for a potential owner of the Lexus NX, the appearance and comfort of the cabin come to the fore here.

There are no questions about interior design. It's not high-tech or classic. The Lexus salon is like a good renovation in an apartment - it smells of expensive leather in an original, high-quality and pleasant way. This style should appeal to most. A lot of leather, natural veneered inserts, soft plastic. Only silver-plated plastic elements stand out from the total mass, reducing the cost of rich interior design. Otherwise, it is almost impossible to find fault with the NX interior. However, as for the configuration. All standard amenities are complemented by seat ventilation, a power trunk and an all-round camera system.

Excellent front seats, a nice three-spoke steering wheel, clear instruments, warm lighting, convenient controls - everything is worked out here and everything is in its place. Women will appreciate the removable make-up mirror disguised between the front seats, and men will appreciate the high-quality Mark Levinson acoustics. The only pity is that the graphics on the screen of the multimedia system do not yet reach modern standards, and in terms of ease of operation, the touchpad similar to laptops is far from being a standard for a car.

There are no questions about the interior. It is beautiful, modern, high quality and comfortable.

But in the case of the Lexus NX, it was possible not to go into details of the description of the interior and driving qualities. It just so happened that the market is all on the side. The Lexus NX is already the top seller in the class. Causes? It looks great, costs less than the German competitors and drives well. And also Brand Lexus enjoys respect no worse than a Mercedes or BMW, where it loses its price much slower than the Germans and is famous for its reliability. Is this not enough to become the best-selling car in the class?

Exterior

The most noticeable innovation in the appearance of the car is a new grille. She (visually) became even larger and acquired often standing horizontal slats. Thus, the NX stylistically approached the older brothers RX and LX. The shape has changed front bumper- the "lip" disappeared from it. We are talking about regular versions of the car, and the modification with sports styling F-Sport looks almost the same as before the update. The junior crossover received dynamic turn signals both front and rear, new stampings in the form of a branded spindle on the trunk lid, as well as a non-contact trunk opening system with a wave of the foot. In the F-Sport modification, the exhaust system couplers have become larger, more angular and more aggressive.

A micro-revolution has taken place in version indexing: a car with a turbocharged 2-liter engine with a capacity of 238 "horses" is no longer called the NX200t, but the NX300. The Japanese nevertheless succumbed to the pernicious influence of the Germans, who a few years ago interrupted the correlation between engine size and model index number. It's a pity.

The names of the other two versions remain the same: NX200 (two-liter naturally aspirated engine with 150 hp) and NX300h (hybrid power plant with a total output of 197 hp).

Interior

The small 7-inch central screen with too wide side frames, which was previously uncontested for all NX trim levels, in the older versions grew to an impressive 10.3 inches and became almost frameless, and in the younger ones it grew to 8 inches, which is also good. And got a new stylish interface graphics - the same as on the flagship LS sedan and LC coupe. True, the uninformative touchpad for managing the multimedia system has not disappeared. In the city, the NX300h feels definitely more comfortable than on the highway. Accelerating smoothly, speeds of 40-50 km / h can be achieved on one electric traction. But on the track, no matter how carefully and calmly you drive, at a speed of 90 km / h without using the classic gasoline engine no longer manageable. The fuel consumption of the hybrid fluctuates at the level of 5-6 liters per 100 km.

To be honest, before I got behind the wheel of the NX 200, I foreshadowed mediocre dynamics. Of course, the Lexus lacks traction when overtaking highways, but for a measured ride around the city, the capabilities of the power unit are quite enough. Under heavy acceleration, the presence of the CVT is reminiscent of the monotonous hum of the engine at high speeds, but if you drive slowly, the NX 200 pleases with smooth reactions and convenient traction control. The appetite of the two-liter "four" is moderate. Of course, these are not the declared official 7.2 liters per 100 km, but the result of 9.1 liters, resulting from three thousand kilometers traveled in mixed mode, can also be considered quite good.

The 150-horsepower engine does not have enough traction for confident overtaking on the highway, but for a measured movement in the city, the power is enough. Average consumption according to the test results, it was 9.1 liters per 100 km.

E det NX is unexpectedly tough. Without looking at the road, passengers in the cabin can determine not only the caliber of pits and bumps that come under the wheels, but the profile of the coating, for example, when a worn-out chipped coating is replaced by freshly laid smooth asphalt. "ANX" tightly jumps over speed bumps, responds with a railway knock in response to cracks in the asphalt and does not spare the ass of passengers in the pits. But when there is a smooth surface of good coverage under the wheels, the crossover flies like an arrow. fast track- the only place where I regretted that I took the weakest engine for the test, and not the gambling 238-horsepower "turbo four". NX is good on a straight line, does not "dance" in ruts and pleases with a clearly adjusted zero position of the steering wheel.

And the Lexus was a pleasant surprise on winding country roads with an abundance of different turns and turns. Compared to the folk RAV4, the geometry of the suspensions is preserved here, but a lot of improvements have been made, starting with reinforced subframes, ending with new springs and shock absorbers. Hence the lively behavior, not devoid of a twinkle. The NX has little to no roll in corners, and the payoff for an overly rigid chassis is precise and quick response to driver input.

The crossover is responsive and responsive on good pavement, but as soon as the road deteriorates, the suspension becomes stiff.

And the power steering did not disappoint. Here in suit and light artificial effort and good feedback, allowing you to intuitively feel even a small angle of rotation of the front wheels. Lexus does not give up, even if the driver decided to go wild. Together with the excess speed of entering the turn, with the excitement of a passenger car, the crossover predictably slides with the front end and obediently returns to the trajectory under the gas release and delicate steering. It is a pity that the soundproofing is not up to par. Of course, the interior of the Lexus NX is quieter than in the mass segment models, but there is no such isolation from the outside world as, for example, the GS sedan or the RX crossover is not here. The main problem is the rumble from the tires, which makes its way into the cabin almost constantly, regardless of the speed and quality of the asphalt. By the way, that problem is being actively discussed at the forum of the Lexus Russia club. Summing up all the impressions received from the Lexus NX for a month, we can say that the Japanese have a very interesting and even somewhat out of the brand concept car. Yes, it is not without flaws, the main of which are the stiff suspension and insufficient sound insulation, which are atypical for Lexus cars. But the NX has enough advantages. Suffice it to note the bright design, excellent interior trim, good handling and cost-effective compared to competitors.
