The scenario for finding out the off-road abilities of our wards was prompted by life itself. Once my friends and I went on a picnic on the most ordinary, let's say, average SUV. Everything was familiar, if not trite: we arrived at the place, settled down, fried a barbecue, tasted ... One bad luck - while we were peacefully housekeeping in the open air, enjoying the fresh air and a wonderful view of a small lake, the weather took a turn for the worse. Clouds rolled in, a fleeting but heavy summer rain passed. Guess what I'm getting at? Correctly! We had to crawl back on the sodden dirt road and force a large puddle formed after the rain. In it we found our adventures.

A familiar picture? That's it! Something like this has probably happened to everyone. So we decided to repeat that “barbecue route” during our traditional big test, especially since three very “tasty” cars from the driver's point of view have already been selected for him.

However, before telling about how this little dramatization ended, I propose to digress directly to the test objects themselves. As you already understood, this time they were crossovers - Infiniti FX, Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6.

The usual ritual of getting to know cars, which, of course, begins with an examination of the interior, has been pretty long. This is not surprising - it took a fair amount of time to deal with all the optional stuffing that each of the trinity of luxury crossovers is stuffed with.


His Grace

Light and very airy Salon Infiniti Wrapped in leather and wood, the FX50 envelops those seated in front. On the driving position at the same time, a feeling of spaciousness is created, and at the same time, everything you need is nearby - literally at your fingertips. The architecture of the front panel with a "deep relief" is very successful. Climate and music controls are logically grouped on the center console. This combination features the characteristic Infiniti oval analog clock, and is crowned by a large color display that displays information from the navigation and multimedia systems, as well as images from the rear and side view cameras.

Next to the display are a whole “keyboard” and a controller puck that controls the on-board navigation and media systems. This placement of the control interface makes it easier to visually control all the settings being made, but if you have to dig into the menu for a long time, then your hand gets tired on weight.

Behind it will obviously be convenient only for two. This is hinted at by the shape of the rear sofa, equipped with only two full-fledged headrests and a tiny third in the center. Those sitting here have their own video monitor that retracts into the ceiling for watching DVDs. The rear seat is divided in a ratio of 2:3 and can be folded from luggage compartment. However, the trunk itself is small for a car of this class and lacks additional amenities such as curtains and cargo mounts.


Infiniti FX50

"Japanese American" Infiniti FX - the most expensive of the cars presented in this test. He can only handle light off-road, all the difficult sections of which the car will take "move".

Simple symmetrical differentials (D) are installed in the front and rear axles. If the electronics detects a difference in the angular speeds of rotation of the wheels, the differential lock simulation system (TM) comes into action: the discs are braked with the necessary force, and the torque does not “leave” through the running wheel.

The multi-plate friction clutch (M) is responsible for the distribution of thrust between the axles. With rectilinear uniform movement on a flat dry road, almost all the torque is transmitted to the rear wheels - in contrast to the "younger" Infiniti crossovers, power unit FX models installed longitudinally. For the same reason, engineers provided a toothed chain to transmit power to the front axle drive shaft.

If the rear axle differential lock simulation range is selected, but the torque continues to be wasted, the electronics that control the friction clutch come into action. Up to 50% of tractive effort can be realized through the wheels of the front axle.

At the disposal of the driver, however, there are two more means of improving the off-road capabilities of the car. Firstly, you can turn off the stabilization system - the VDC off button is located on the panel to the left of the steering column. Secondly, try to use the so-called winter mode. Its activation key is located on the central tunnel next to the automatic transmission selector. The ground clearance of the Infiniti FX is not adjustable, and this is another argument against the off-road use of the car: the “geometric” cross-country ability is not at the “height”.


Timeless classic

The interior of the Porsche Cayenne is a living classic. The traditional design of the dashboard, the layout of the center console corresponding to the classic canons, as well as the now rarely seen excess amount indicators in the instrument cluster. For example, you are interested in knowing what is the current voltage in the on-board network, what is the temperature of the oil in the engine? Hardly ... Well, maybe you'll be curious a couple of times and forget about these indicators. Then why are these devices here? Tribute to tradition. As well as a large steering wheel, and the ignition switch located to the left of it. The latter is frankly inconvenient. And no matter how much you refer to family roots and all sorts of corporate features there, it does not become more convenient.

But the seats are very comfortable, made in a sporty style and providing good lateral support. Both the familiar push-button interface of the media system and the original rocker switches for climate control, suspension and off-road transmission modes are convenient. That's just the plastic from which they are made, unpleasantly contrasts with its frank cheapness with luxurious leather upholstery. It's annoying. Indeed, there is hope that new owner firms - Volkswagen - will be able to "pull up" Porsche interior designers in this indicator. Fortunately, there is someone to learn from: Audi, which is part of the concern, has long been out of competition in terms of the quality of interior design, even among the German Big Three.

Like the Infiniti, the Cayenne back row seating is hospitable to only two passengers. Despite the sufficient space, the sofa itself is profiled for two, and the fact that the third will be superfluous is reminiscent of a small headrest. But in Porsche, rear passengers have an individual climate control panel. The trunk is the most spacious among today's three competitors and is equipped with a cargo locking system.


Porsche Cayenne GTS

By nominal features - a set of transmission elements - the Porsche Cayenne is a full-fledged SUV. By the way, his drive scheme is the same as that of his relative - Volkswagen Touareg.

Simple symmetrical differentials (D) are installed in the bridges, while a planetary gear (SP) works in the transfer case, the ratio of the gear teeth of which provides a 38:62 thrust distribution in favor of the rear axle.

There is also a locking center differential. For this purpose in transfer box coupler installed with electronic control(E). Interestingly, the degree of blocking can vary from zero to 100%. In the latter case, a rigid connection arises between the bridges: the torque is not distributed, and the differential is excluded from work. The last mode is the best suited for off-road.

In addition, a rear axle differential lock is optionally offered (it was not installed on the test machine). Then the imitation of the blocking of the rear cross-axle differential by the operation of the brake mechanisms is not applied. On the front wheels, a similar system is always installed - it is included in the basic equipment of the car.

If one of the wheels (front or rear axle) begins to slip, the blocking simulation (TM) system comes into play. After the range of its operation is selected, the center differential lock is connected. You can further increase the traction on the wheel by engaging a downshift (PP) in the transfer case.

As a means of improving the parameters of geometric cross-country ability, the driver has a clearance adjustment system.


bavarian style

Salon BMW X6 can be described in just three words: expensive, high quality and gloomy. It is difficult to make any claims to the materials used in the decoration. The level of interior execution, fitting of all details, the quality of upholstery seams is the highest. But the dark interior with a "minimalistic" design really does not inspire optimism. It is not enlivened either by the multifunction display at the top of the center console, or by such interesting details as the high-tech gear selector joystick with an indication of the selected mode. However, in light colors Salon BMW X6 looks much better.

Instruments BMW X6 seem unnecessarily modest - just a couple of round dials and a display, a simple red backlight. This is especially striking against the background of rivals. The center console also seems empty, as if the car has a poor package. In fact, everything, of course, is not so - just a fair amount of the functions are available through the iDrive menu. Someone likes such a decision - they say, progressively, - someone does not. But the front seats on the "Bavarian" are the most advanced in terms of all kinds of adjustments, settings and tweaks. I would especially like to note the change in the inclination of the upper back and the adjustment of the degree of lateral support.

Sitting in the back is also very comfortable, and already without any reservations, only together. There are only two individual chairs, separated by a center console with cup holders and a tray for small items. The trunk is slightly more modest in volume than the Porsche, but also has a well-thought-out cargo locking system.


BMW X6 xDrive 50i

Unlike its closest relative, the X5 model, the X6 has better off-road properties, although the transmissions of both cars are based on the same proprietary Bavarian xDrive scheme. When driving outside the asphalt, the driver will have to rely only on electronic systems: it cannot directly influence the distribution of torque.

With a straight-line uniform movement, the traction force between the axles is distributed in a ratio of 40:60 (in favor of the rear wheels). This distinguishes the crossover of the Munich company from the vast majority of competitors that do not have a center differential. When changing road conditions, the torque distribution range can vary from 0:100 to 50:50.

AT front axle a simple symmetrical (conical) differential (D) is installed. If the conditions for the adhesion of the front wheels begin to differ (this is expressed in the presence of a difference in their angular velocities), then the system for simulating the differential lock by the operation of the brake mechanisms (TM) comes into action.

But in the rear axle there is already an active differential (YES), basically having a free conical differential. YES is a mechanism capable of increasing the torque supplied to each of the axle shafts with the help of additional planetary gears. This helps to “turn” the car in the limit turn with additional traction on the outer wheel. Off-road, YES successfully replaces the self-locking differential, so that on rear wheels blocking simulation system (TM) is not installed.

The X6 is equipped with only automatic transmissions of a classic hydromechanical design, which improve the off-road capabilities of the machine.


Two go away

On the way to the place where the impromptu “jeep light” was planned, we overcame different sections of the road: an almost straight multi-lane highway, winding, full of turns, and primers of different quality and condition. In short, almost everything you need to evaluate the habits of each car from our dashing trio. Moving from car to car, each of us made up our own "verbal portrait" of the subjects. Well, the first exchange of views happened exactly after the crews left the asphalt for a country road. The debate gave an unexpected result: "And in the road disciplines, the Cayenne looks pale against the background of rivals."

Take at least dynamic characteristics. We selected competitors with almost the same engine power - the spread turned out to be small: from 400 to 407 hp. At the same time, Porsche and Infiniti have naturally aspirated engines, while BMW has twin-turbo engines, thanks to which it surpasses competitors in torque. As a result, the Bavarian, despite its largest mass, looks the most convincing in overclocking. Infiniti is the lightest of the three. Having a peppy seven-speed automatic (the "Germans" have six steps in the automatic transmission), he easily leaves Porsche. And the BMW is practically not far behind. Conversely, when starting with places Infiniti even slightly pulls ahead and only then slowly gives way to the championship of the Bavarian crossover. Well, the Cayenne lagging behind rivals with increasing speed becomes only more noticeable.

But if this can still be explained from the standpoint of logic or physics, then the loss of Porsche in the convenience of controlling dynamics is no longer amenable to such an explanation. The point is in the settings, and more specifically, in the non-linear nature of the response to pressing the accelerator. It seems that he has already pressed on the gas, and the acceleration is clearly not what he expected. You add a little more, and then the Cayenne rushes forward, so he has to be reined in. With brakes, Porsche also has something similar. This is especially noticeable at low speeds, when you need to carefully slow down. You gently press the pedal, and at first there is no reaction - as if you “choose” a free ride. A little more, and a sharp nod peck follows. On the highway, it's not as noticeable, but in the city it's annoying.

The rivals have nothing of the kind - there the control takes place on an intuitive level: how much you pressed, so much you went or slowed down so much. However, it cannot be ruled out that the Cayenne problems- these are just the features of a particular machine that has been on our test.

The sought-after perfection of behavior, which Porsche lacked so much, was found in the BMW X6. It immediately became clear what kind of machine the same genius was working on this time - a gloomy German one. The Bayern did everything so right that at times it became boring. Not in the sense that you start to yawn behind the wheel, no. Just sometimes there was a feeling that this machine does not need you - it will do everything without you. And it will do it perfectly accurately, without errors. In other words, this is a kind of elusive feeling of detachment from driving, which is difficult to formulate, but can only be felt in your own skin. This is probably also why I liked the Infiniti FX50 more. Perky, lively and honest in his reactions to control, he behaved, maybe not as refined as the Bavarian crossover, but he remained understandable, friendly and predictable in all driving situations.


From simple to complex

Okay, with asphalt habits the picture was clarified (although the study of some nuances was postponed until field tests), the most interesting thing remained - the off-road part of the program. Moreover, it was already close to the “test” puddle. Of course, taking into account the parquet nature of the off-road cars, the road mapped out soft.

Now is the time to see what our test subjects are wearing. Infiniti and Porsche sport huge 21-inch wheels with low-profile tires, and if the tires on the FX have a 45 percent profile, then on the Cayenne it is even less - only 35%. In such “slippers” it’s not a shame to appear on the race track, but you don’t want to climb into the mud at all. The most modest, but also the most suitable (if this word is applicable to such tires at all) off-road shoes for the BMW X6: landing diameter - 19 inches profile - 50%. The tread pattern of all three is infinitely far from off-road, so in which case the hope is mainly for blocking (who has them) and electronics.

On the rolled grader, which led us further and further away from the asphalt familiar to cars, the whole trinity proved to be more than worthy. The suspensions of the cars did an excellent job with moderate bumps and allowed to support enough high speed with almost no loss in comfort. Is that in the salons it became a little noisier. By the way, according to subjective feelings, the best soundproofing turned out to be in the BMW X6, although Porsche and Infiniti are also not bad.

We turned onto a damp primer after a night rain and in some places broken. Immediately I had to slow down and much more carefully choose the trajectory of movement. But here, too, our heroes behaved nobly. This is exactly the level of off-road, when the possibilities of all-wheel drive transmissions of our crossovers are already being used with might and main, and intelligent suspensions activate the mode corresponding to the conditions - “dissolve” shock absorbers and stabilizers roll stability. However, there are no slips yet, and mechanical and electronic interlocks do not come into operation. Simply put, a normal working situation, for which, in general, most are designed parquet SUVs with pseudo-permanent all-wheel drive. And of the three cars, this transmission option is on the BMW X6 and Infiniti FX. On the Porsche Cayenne, all-wheel drive, as they say, is honest - with a central differential, and in stock it also has a forced lock and air suspension with variable ground clearance. Then we went, albeit small, but already thoroughly muddy areas, where we already had to move with slippage. So we got close to the limit of patency. No, not yet cars, but only road tires.

Let them crawl awkwardly

The puddle, which I remember, had visibly shrunk in the time that had passed since that very picnic, but was still quite capable of taking our test subjects into its sticky embrace. Therefore, just in case, we removed the cables from the trunks and began to iron the alleged trap in turn, leaving a couple of cars on the shore of the "reservoir" as rescue tugs. The first to "swim" went BMW X6. After skidding and getting dirty, the crossover crossed the puddle several times without any complications in different directions, which caused disappointment in our ranks: “Well, did we trudge here in vain?”

The next to try their luck was the Porsche Cayenne. And he "didn't disappoint". At the next approach, the “landing” did happen! And although it happened almost on the edge of a puddle, get out in reverse Did not work out. The time has come to use the remaining off-road arsenal in reserve. Having twisted the switches on the central tunnel, I turn on the lowering and the central differential lock. There was no rear lock - this is an optional thing, and it was absent on our car. Well, what are they rich with ... The next several attempts to get out on their own also did not lead to the desired result. "Slippery" rubber instantly broke into a slip, leaving the car motionless. There was hope for an evacuation. But the last attempt, made rather to clear his conscience, unexpectedly turned out to be successful - he managed to catch the hook and jump out of the trap. We will assume that we got out not without the help of a downshift and blocking, and therefore, the Porsche Cayenne knowingly carries with it an additional bunch of gears and other important pieces of iron.

Another victim - Infiniti FX - after the previous experiment was introduced into the puddle with great apprehension. But after a couple of laps, caution left me, followed by immediate retribution. Almost in the same place where the Cayenne had just sat, the Infiniti settled down no less “comfortably”. Only to connect and block this time there is nothing. Attempts to move back or forward only led to the fact that the front end was completely chopped off. The clutch transmitting torque to the wheels of the front axle overheated and automatically turned off, as eloquently evidenced by a fire on dashboard lamp. Well, now it's definitely evacuation! One of the colleagues had to tinker, catching the cable to the lug that was unsuccessfully placed on the Infiniti. After that, BMW, without much effort, removed the person in distress from the “aquatic environment”. Now the planned experiment to determine the off-road capabilities of the three crossovers could be considered successfully completed.

Provided a theoretical basis

Debriefing was carried out at the training ground. To begin with, we carried out all the necessary measurements of the angles of patency and ground clearance. Checked suspension articulation. Inspected from below for security assessment. All this only confirmed the already formed opinion about the machines.

The Porsche Cayenne turned out to have the best off-road “geometry”, which is largely due to the adjustable air suspension. Together with the wider transmission capabilities, which has a reduction range in the transfer case and a forced locking of the central differential, this provides the Cayenne with unconditional leadership in our current trio off-road.

The X6 looks almost like a coupe and performs well on the road. But this does not prevent him from feeling confident in the mud. And the plastic aerodynamic flaps that cover the entire bottom of the BMW provide some kind of protection even off-road. Yes, and layout misses (so that some node or assembly is clearly asking for a stump) were also not noticed. In general, in the X6, Bavarian engineers managed to really combine a sports coupe and an SUV.

Well, Infiniti is still more a car. It is good for everyday trips or travel, but does not like off-road trips. This becomes clear when looking at our pivot charts and table. FX yielded to competitors only in the off-road discipline, and in the rest it at least looked no worse or scored the most points. So if there is no need for off-road, then the Japanese crossover will probably be the best buy. And, undoubtedly, the most profitable among today's rivals. ORD
