For the Czechs, Rapid has become a real gift - thanks to its appearance, the annual production of Skoda has exceeded the one million mark and continues to grow. Maybe that's why the modernization that Rapid underwent, despite the five-year age of the model, turned out to be rather superficial? I'm not being ironic about this at all. It's even good that the design has barely been updated. Remembering, you begin to appreciate moderation and conservatism. Yes, there are changes, but they are so delicate that an unprepared person is unlikely to notice them.

So in front bumper there are new foglights. And the new ones are not only in form, but also in content - they are LED. Diode steel and running lights in the headlights. In addition, in expensive modifications, the optics acquired a bi-xenon filling and an automatic switching function with high beam to the nearest Side turn signals moved from the front fenders to the exterior mirrors, and rear lights got all the same LEDs.

I open the trunk - everything is still there. Rapid as it was, and remained in its volume: 550 liters! The suitcase and travel bag were simply lost in it.

The steering wheel is beautiful and sheathed in leather, but the seams are too rough, uncomfortable for the fingers. And there is no place to put a phone.

But in terms of equipment, progress is still noticeable. Inexperienced drivers will appreciate the appearance of front parking sensors. Everyone, without exception, will like the flagship multimedia system, the screen size of which has increased to 8 inches. In addition, it now supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto- in the age of smartphones, there is no way without it. In Europe, the owners of the updated Rapids will receive an Internet access point, but our cars will not receive it. We will not have adaptive cruise control and the system automatic braking in front of the obstacle.

I had no problem choosing a test car - I asked for the keys to a 1.4-liter 125-horsepower turbo version. The rest of the modifications did not interest me - they are not represented with us. What can I say - such a Rapid rides smartly, justifying its name (translated from English - fast, high-speed). The motor confidently pulls in a wide range of revolutions, and the 7-speed DSG robot with two clutches seems to have been taught to switch without jerking. well-coordinated power unit.

But the chassis left a double impression. On the highway, Rapid rushes collected, like a sniper bullet. And in the corners it doesn’t stew - it willingly rises to an arc and quickly reacts to pressing the accelerator pedal. Too bad the suspension is too stiff. Even on excellent German pavement, Skoda finds bumps, thereby perplexing the crew. more comfortable on the go.

“Shaking? - Shkodov's engineers are surprised. “We think the ride is in the acceptable zone.” They are cunning. But you can understand them. Given the greater mass of Rapid relative to the same Polo, as well as an extended wheelbase, the suspension had to be made a little stiffer.

And it would be nice if these sacrifices were justified by a high one, but no. The engine is small, but gluttonous: it eats almost eight liters a hundred miles away. He works to the limit, hence such an appetite.

In general, it is good that this engine is not offered in Russia. For our market, the line of engines has remained the same: the already mentioned 1.4 TSI and the good old 1.6-liter aspirated in two boost options (90 and 110 hp). It is this engine that the vast majority of buyers choose from us, and for good reason. The 1.6 motor is in all respects more pleasant than its turbo counterparts: high-torque, balanced. In addition, only this version offers a traditional automatic machine as an alternative to mechanics. Everything we love.

Rapid will arrive in the showrooms of Russian dealers in July. Prices have already been announced. Basic modification Entry and its successor Active have slightly risen in price. But the remaining three performances (Ambition, Style and Monte Carlo) have become a little more accessible.
