What does stance mean. History of Stance culture and USDM culture. Choosing the right colors

This material was drawn by me on the pages of the foreign magazine about Stance culture TheLowDown and I will share with you my thoughts on how the Stance culture was born.

Let's be realistic, the passion for fitment and stens in our country has become more than just a tribute to fashion. Very often, Stance culture causes furious controversy in the automotive forums and beyond. Adherents and fans of Stance culture have long united in groups such as Stanceworks, Hellaflush, Rimtuck and Slamburglars.

The birth of the Stance culture itself is rather difficult to define, because the roots of this car traffic lead to multiple sources. Whatever the stensers themselves say, the Stance can be considered a fashion now, but its pedigree is rooted in the practical application of wide wheels with a short overhang. Even decades ago, such wheels began to be used in motorsport to create a wider track of the car, which provided powerful cars better grip and serious cornering stability. But do not forget that Stance culture is more multifaceted, there were other promises to its origin.

The use of wide, house-stretched rubber is now associated with the Stance movement, but the first to use such a modification were Japanese tuners, adherents of the bosozoku / bippu / shakotan and kaido movements (you can read about these auto subcultures in the group In Europe, house rubber was a hallmark of the DUB culture (This has also been covered by someone else on Carakoom.) This feature was gradually imported into the US, where it became even more common among tuners and car enthusiasts.

Without a doubt, the greatest influence on the formation of Stance culture came from the Japanese. However, like many popular things in our world, Stance culture finally took shape in America, in the attempts of the USDM car scene to adopt the Japanese style.
You might start arguing that the Japanese were the first or the Europeans with their Dub scene. Definitely, there was a similar trend in those parts, in history there were cars with a similar style and the modern Stance scene, some techniques were adopted from the Japanese and Europeans. However, it should be understood that the “states” are responsible for the dissemination and popularization of the Stance culture.

The foreign car culture in the US is now in its second generation. The first generation was quite accurately reflected in the film The Fast and the Furious. The first generation automotive culture in the United States was built on the aspirations and aspirations of many tuners, modifiers and core builders. Gradually, the culture matured and now we can observe its second generation. Stance culture took root in this second generation.

Today, Stance is determined by two main parameters: clearance height and fitment (you can also read about what this is on Carakoom). Despite this, there are a lot of schools of "correct thinking" and this reflects a large number of sources that influenced the formation of culture. For some, it is important to maintain (and even improve) driving performance car, the work of its suspension, for others, there is nothing more important than the shocking appearance of a car with an aggressive understatement.

Stance culture, like many others, gave its speakers new words, such as 'fitment' 'tuck', 'poke', 'stretch', 'scrub', 'flush', 'static', 'lowered' ('sacked' , 'slammed', dumped', 'decked', 'railed', 'dropped' etc.).

There are a few other elements that have entered the American automotive scene along with the fitment trend. Most notable: the rat-rod (which you can also read about at and retro accessories, parts and superb quality wheels from Japan. In the compact sports scene, everyone is now obsessed with incredible and insane engine swaps.
This is how it works abroad. If you are interested in learning about the Russian automotive scene and Stance culture in Russia, then I recommend reading the article by Ivan Fedorov from Ranflas magazine. Fortunately, he is also somewhere in the neighborhood.

Friends, I want to talk to you about sore points, or rather, to speculate on such a topic as stance. Why do we choose this culture? It's so impractical, especially in our urban environment. But why do we still strive to be low and wide? I often hear the phrase: "How can you drive in Russia in such a low car?" to which I immediately get the answer: "Is it really low?! It's high! Look at what a bad wheel gap". You've probably heard this question too: "And the wheels don't strike on the arches?" Yes, I will only be glad if they start to strike, because then I will know that my fitment is in order. So, why do we need all this and what do all these terms mean? Let's take it all in order.

What is Stan?
This is a very simple word often used by western tuners. But in its simplicity, it has no analogues in the Russian language and therefore, for most domestic enthusiasts, it implies a whole direction of finalizing their car to a truly stunning look. If translated literally, then it sounds like a "rack", which explains to most the nature of this direction. We are trying to give the "correct stance" to our car. Let's now see what it is eaten with.

Wheel Gap (wheelgap)
The distance from the top edge of the wheel to the edge of the arch, that is, the change in the clearance of the car. In other words, jeeps have a wheel gap, be healthy! The essence of stance culture is to minimize this distance as much as possible and the smaller it is, the higher your level.

We are responsible for this suspension struts. Alternatively, you can simply cut off the coils on regular springs. But as a rule, this method will not give you the correct wheelgap, but will only disable the racks faster. To properly obtain a clear car landing, we have two ways:

Coilovers (helical suspension)
This type of suspension has height and stiffness adjustment. The clearance limit for some manufacturers reaches up to -100 mm from the standard indicator, and the rigidity of the racks can have as many as 30 adjustments. All this is adjusted only mechanically due to adjustments on the shock absorbers themselves. In slang terms, "screws" (as they are called) have a lot of respect in stenser circles and are considered "true".

Since we have to overcome all the obstacles on our way, scraping with our “belly”, leaving some signatures on the bottoms of our cars, thus the expression “puzoterki” appeared.

Air Suspension (air suspension)
This type of suspension has all the same features as the screws, with the exception of the springs. They are replaced by air cushions. The height of the car is adjusted from the inside of the car by forcing or bleeding air from the pillows. We can say that this type of suspension is very practical and relevant for our roads, as we facilitate our movement in problematic places. However, such a view in stance circles is considered "cheating", i.e. roughly speaking, we bypass obstacles, but do not overcome them. But in this version of the suspension, we get the most clear wheel gap.

Fitment (fitment)
The location of the wheel in the arch, in other words, how beautiful it looks in the arch of your car. The task of stance culture is to minimize the distance between outer edge wheels to the inner edge of the arch. Disc offset (ET) is responsible for this indicator. The smaller the number, the more wheel will protrude outward and thereby compensate for the distance you lack for a perfectly correct fitment. achieve good result can be done in two ways:

Outer Lip / Rim (outer rims)
This method is only suitable for owners of compound disks. It is enough to change the outer shelves of the disk to wider ones, thereby reducing the distance we need.

Spacers (spacers)
Exists for changing the offset of the disk. Mounted between wheel and hub. There are spacers different widths, from 5 mm to 50 mm and more.

Stance is a flexible concept and it also has its own degrees and levels. They are formed due to those two components, Wheel Gap and Fitment. Let's take a closer look.

slammed
When the wheel "hides" under the wing. In most cases, the suspension is deliberately lowered in order to sink the wheel into the arch. Basically, such combinations are found on VDUB or VIP cars with air suspension. VIP culture is also a separate story, which we will talk about sometime.

Flush
Something similar to the Russian "flush", but a little different. The wheel with the tire, as it were, continues the shape of the wing, or is on the same vertical line with its edge. At the same time, the distance between the edge of the disk and the wing can be about half an inch, which makes it possible to use the car on a daily basis, or, for example, for drifting.

HellaFlush
The extreme degree of radical fitment, when the edge of the disk or the sidewall of the tire literally rubs against the edge of the wing. The term HellaFlush itself is slang, possibly invented by a certain Jerry in 2003 and developed into a whole movement with the motto "Offset is everything". In other words, HellaFlush's adherents strive by hook or by crook to shove wider wheels into the car. For this, things like "camber kit" and "stretch" are often used. We will return to them a little later.

hellafail
In this situation, the wing seems to lie on the rim of the disk, the wheels collapse into a house, a crazy negative camber is made. As a rule, this option is used on machines with air suspension. Most often, such a fitment can be found on VIP cars.

However, there are also negative manifestations of the desire for gauge width, for example "Too much poke" or "MexiFlush"- the case if the wheel sticks out too far from the arch.

It is worth noting that achieving the correct fit is in no way intended (although not excluded) to improve the handling or turning ability of the machine. Fitment is a feature of the appearance of the car, nothing more.

Stretch (stretch)
Rubber house. We specifically select tires for the disks initially narrower than it should be for this disk. For example, on a 10x17 disc, according to all the laws of physics and safety precautions, it is necessary to install 265/40 rubber. We are trying to put 215/40.

For what and why? First of all, this is done to simplify the process of installing a wide disk. For example, a disk with 265/40 tires simply will not fit in our arch, it will strike and catch everything that is possible. Secondly, this so-called stretch makes the disc more voluminous by minimizing the rubber on it, which in turn creates the effect of large and expressive wheels.

But this also has its downsides. Disc rims lose protection in the form of rubber on the edges, which is fraught with dents or splitting of the disc rim from contact, for example, with a curb (curb). Therefore, one must be extremely careful, because beauty is a terrible force!

Camber Kit (negative camber kits)

They have very large negative camber values, up to 10 degrees. They are used for the same purpose as stretch - installation in the arch of wide wheels. There are many varieties of this device, including on screw racks, sometimes it is possible to adjust the camber. I will show the most common methods in the photo.

Also, the suspension of the car is made as rigid as possible. Imagine what will happen with a clearance of 5 cm if the car has soft suspension. Therefore, we are trying to make the entire suspension of our car as rigid as possible, like a kart, in order to avoid contact with the road on uneven areas.

Let's not forget about the body of the car. This very important part should be as fresh as possible. Various body kits, trims, cilia and tinting take place if it is in harmony with the overall appearance of the car. Usually OEM ( original parts) have a correct and harmonious design. As for tinting, there is no clear definition. A lot of attention is paid to small things, such as the backstage, panels in the car, the steering wheel, and so on. Create your own unique style and grace! Let's sum up a little what is needed for the right stance car. Let's call it the "rule of three principles":

1. Clean and fresh appearance body.
2. Correct landing of the car.
3. Impressive with their width and beauty of the wheel.

So why stance? Probably because it is very exciting and interesting. Because in our opinion it is very stylish, because we ourselves set the style and character of our car. Because a lowered car on wide wheels immediately looks different, the body lines look much more beautiful and elegant. Because the car takes on a sporty and aggressive look. There are many "becauses", but we have made our choice and we suggest you also make your choice in favor of this culture. And we, in turn, will definitely help you with the right advice and resolving emerging issues. Friends, let's develop this culture together, because it's so interesting!

We break stereotypes that style is not for our roads!

Art in human understanding is broad and multifaceted. An incredible number of styles and varieties of artistic painting can cause you a whole range of emotions - from shock to euphoria. Each of you decides for yourself: to admire the famous "La Gioconda" by Leonardo da Vinci, or to fall unconscious from the headache that her gaze causes.

Suprematism is a direction, the founder of which was Kazemir Malevich. The essence of the paintings of this direction is conveyed by the author through the prism of the simplest geometric shapes and outlines. Originating in the first half of the 1910s, it was doomed to years of misunderstanding. However, today there is no person in the world who would not know the famous "Black Square" by Malevich, the cost of which is estimated at millions of US dollars.

The style of car tuning is its own art form with its own history and values. So, the relatively recent style of stance, like Suprematism, often remains underestimated by others. Despite this, the circle of admirers of this direction is growing with each goal, capturing most of the motorists from all over the world. Let's try to figure out what stance is and what is the reason for its popularity.

The name stance commemorates a whole culture of car tuning, the main distinguishing feature of which is a low "stance". It is noteworthy that the term itself appeared a few years later, after the popularization of understating cars. To create a stance project, it is necessary, first of all, to reduce the clearance of the car, and then, do not forget about installing the “correct” rims. In order to make the car "lower", there are several methods:

Static

"Static" suspension, or static, is the most a budget option changes ground clearance. Typically, your car's springs are changed to similar, shorter lengths, which greatly reduces the number of "undesired" inches under your car. Note that it is not worth cutting the springs, since this operation will lead to the destruction of the remaining turns and incorrect work shock absorbers.

screw suspension

Coilover suspension, or "coilovers", is a very practical and inexpensive solution for those who want to "lower" their car. The main difference between this method and static is the ability to mechanically adjust the movement of the support cup, as a result of which the vehicle's clearance increases or decreases, depending on the actions performed.

Air suspension

Cars equipped with special “airbags” instead of shock absorbers, as well as a compressor to create the necessary pressure in the system, can change the ride height in a matter of seconds by pressing the corresponding button on the control panel. This option of "lowering" the car is the most expensive, but the comfort and practicality that it will provide is worth all the money spent on the kit.

Of course, to create a “correct” fit, it is impossible to just “lower” the car, since the degree of your “lowering” directly depends on the position of the wheels, called “fitment”. For a visual understanding of the varieties of "fitment", an illustration is given below.

In most cases, the wider the rims, the more attention the project deserves. To ensure the possibility of placing disks of the maximum possible width, a negative “camber” is used, which allows the disks to be “filled up” into the “bowels” of the wheel arches.

The final step in preparing a stance project is to install the "correct" disks. The variety of existing manufacturers and models is amazing. We have already talked about how to choose the right discs for your. However, stance is an art that requires sacrifice. And to install discs once popular in this culture from Bentley Continental GT for any other car, adapter spacers are needed, which allow not only to change the hub characteristics and the number mounting holes, but also wheel offset.

Wheel spacers are installed directly between the hub and rim. There are two types of spacers: spacers and adapters. The first ones are used to increase the wheel offset, which visually allows you to expand the track of the car, as well as get rid of the effect of "absorption" by the wheel arches. Adapters are used to change the drilling of the car or if the size of the CO on the disc does not match. As a rule, spacers of this type are attached to the vehicle hub with automotive bolts, after which rim attached to the spacer with additional bolts.

You can purchase spacers to increase the overhang or adapters to change the drilling by contacting the professionals in their field, Master Fitment.

Despite the existing stereotype, modern wheel spacers are different high quality alloy and durability, and their design allows not to create a critical pressure on the hub, which entails its early failure.

In conclusion, we note that regardless of the make and model, any car can be turned into an eye-catching stance project. In what ways to achieve the desired result, each owner decides for himself, depending on financial capabilities and taste preferences. And despite all the misunderstanding of others, stance has become a kind of art that you can love or hate, and now it is already impossible to deny the fact that it has conquered the entire globe.

Looking through foreign forums and delving into automotive styles, it is not uncommon to come across the buzzword Stance, but no one really explains what it means. Armed with a translator, we begin to understand ...

Stance(translated from English "landing") - is increasingly applied to cars with respect to clearance (clearance) and replaces the word Drop (translated from English "fall"), which refers to a car that is underestimated and dropped on its belly (dropped).

The main elements of Stance movement are the landing (clearance) of the car and the location of the wheel in the arches (): disk width, tire width and profile, disk overhang, etc.

Fans of Stance culture on their Stance cars consciously sacrifice fast and comfortable travel on the roads, slowly crawling over speed bumps, encounter problems in the form of bad roads and other potholes, paying tribute to style and culture in general.

In the bodybeat.ru blog, Oleg Milchenko identified 2 types of car "landing":
- Low station- when the car literally lies on the bottom, it is not uncommon to see on cars made in;
- gay stance- an additional increase in ground clearance, making a "jeep" out of the car.

So how is it good example provided 2 photos of Infiniti Q45. I hope he does not mind that I will post the same pictures on my blog:

low gay

All this allows you to highlight the car on the road from the gray mass and make it more attractive. But in fact, “nothing at all” was done with the car: replacing the springs or a slightly more expensive option - screw racks, wheels with a maximum reach and an acceptable width are selected, rubber is selected (usually low-profile) and pulled onto the disks, now all this is installed on the car, fitted under the arches and collapse is done so that these same discs fit. In addition to the style, a modest (emphasizing dignity) body kit can be added. After all this, the machine acquires the same stance style, which was conceived by the owner of the car. Now you can be sure that your car has become unique and 100% will not get lost in the crowd.

And of course Stance culture(or as they sometimes call themselves Stance Nation) could not ignore, here is proof for you:

As you can see from the left column, Stance and complement each other. It is with such a symbiosis that your car will receive more than one thousand goggles.

At the end of the post - a short video about stens:

Thank you for your attention.

P.S. Do not forget to subscribe to updates, leave comments, retweets, put likes and all that. Let's make the project better and more popular together. Many thanks in advance to everyone!

For the majority of motorists, a personal car is just a means of transportation, but there are aesthetes for whom a car is a way to stand out from the crowd, it is unlimited opportunities to turn their “faithful iron horse” into a chic work of art, it is a modified and expensive masterpiece of automotive culture.

There are a huge number of tuning styles that dramatically transform the car, highlighting it from the gray mass of fellows. One of the most popular and sought after styles among motorists different countries world is stance-style.What is stance movement? How comfortable is driving on Russian roadsStance car? stensIs it a tribute to the restless auto-fashion or the practical application of wide wheels with a small overhang?

Stens culture in Russia or how to build a Stens car

The history of the emergence of the stens movement

What is stance and who can be considered the founders of culture? Invented exquisite auto-style tuners from Japan. But innovators from America contributed to the spread and popularization of culture. Stance The movement has its roots in the practical use of wide wheels with negative offset.

In the 70s of the last century in European countries, Porsche and Turbo manufacturers began to use negative camber and wide wheels. The innovation guaranteed safe cornering stability and better grip on the track.

Rubber "house" on disks - distinguishing feature modern stance-movement, was first used in 1980 by the Japanese. However, in Europe, wide "house" rubber was associated with DUB-style. US Tuners Combined European DUB and Japanese stens, creating a new generation of chic bodies, a low seating position and a calm, measured ride. This is how stance culture was born.

stens-cars are made in noble rigor, the end result is a creative individual work, which is developed by the owner and the master service center. Russian fans stance car, often faced with off-road, pay tribute to style, purposefully sacrificing speed and convenient movement along local routes. to know what is stens-style, the owner of any car can. Model, class, age, manufacturer does not play a role. Stunning projects are created both on miniature Toyotas and on old, battered Soviet Zhiguli.

How to assemble a stance car?

What is stens? Stance- this is the clearance (landing) of the car and the correct arrangement of the wheels in the arches. The modification consists in replacing the springs or using screw racks. Wheels with a maximum reach and optimal width are installed, low-profile tires are selected. Then the structure is mounted under the arches. The wheels, as it were, grow into a common whole with the body and effectively emphasize the individuality of the car. For the car to take on the same unique stens-style, and became 100% exclusive, a body kit is added, which will favorably emphasize the rest of the advantages of the updated car.

In true stens-Movement, in addition to an impeccable appearance, the safety of the driver and passengers is important. Well-designed tuning should maintain reliable maneuvering with a stylish exterior design.

Machine assembled in the style of " stens"- this is a stylistically thought-out car with a competent arrangement of wheels in the arches and the correct discs, where due attention is paid to disc offset and camber. Technical implementation can be very different. To update the look of the model, you can start small and saw off the springs, but this can make the machine unstable. Professionals take a comprehensive approach to assembly, improve the suspension, install additional levers, bushings. If the car model is common in stens- style, the corresponding spare parts can be produced by the manufacturer for it.
