And I was not surprised by the market failure. But the Compass rode well! And the salon for its time is very worthy. Alas, even belated restyling did not help - the reputation of the car was hopelessly damaged.

The salon already looks old-fashioned. Ergonomic problems - a lot. This is a Duster-style sloping center console located at the very bottom - try to reach it! - a climate control unit, and a highly glaring instrument panel. I was amused by the tiddly glove compartment, in which the notebook sheet is placed with difficulty. But you can still put up with all this, but not with uncomfortable seats. Flat, with indistinct lateral support and very slippery skin. The back would be wide even for Schwarzenegger in his best years. Adjusting the lumbar support doesn't help either. It's good that in addition to heating there is ventilation - in hot Lisbon, where I met Compass, I used it all the time.

The leather on the seats is very unpretentious, the doors are covered with leatherette. Plastic is diversified and does not paint the interior. Mentioned by the Americans as the main competitors are finished much better.

Everything is fine with the equipment: self-parking, electromechanical parking brake, active cruise control, lane keeping and blind spot monitoring systems, automatic braking function. For some reason, the multimedia system is not Russified, but it is friends with CarPlay and Android Auto and thanks to the acoustics of the American brand Beats, fashionable in a hipster environment.

The panoramic roof spoiled the impression of the rear seats, as it reduced the distance from the top of the head to the ceiling to a minimum. At the same time, the length and width of the place is plenty. There are top air vents, a 220 V outlet and a USB power connector. Not bad. But why doesn't the seat have fore/aft adjustment? Somehow out of step with the times.

Lisbon is not only the Portuguese capital, but also the world tramway: the whole city is cut by rails. Jeep does not give in to them, since the chassis is soft and energy-intensive. By the way, McPherson struts work not only in front, but also in the back - a rather rare solution borrowed from a compact counterpart.

The car is small, even winding through the narrow streets without problems. But the visibility is not so hot: the huge headrests of the second row cover half of the glass, the wide front roof pillars obscure the half-tram.

Lisbon is also an unusually hilly city. It's hard to drive here with small motors. Compass with the flagship 170 hp two-liter diesel The Multijet II knows no problems with traction: 380 Nm allows you to accelerate quickly even on steep slopes. Surprisingly, the car is surprisingly quiet and vibrations are kept to a minimum. For the Russian market, diesel is derated up to 140 hp. and 350 Nm - let's see how it will be in practice.

It is difficult to feel the work in the city. On a flat dry road rear wheels traction does not go at all, and not only the rear axle is “cut off”, but also the cardan (using a splined clutch in the power take-off), which reduces losses and saves fuel. But when the front wheels slip, it comes to life, transferring back up to half of the entire thrust.

The Compass has exactly the same 9-speed ZF automatic as the baby Renegade, but thanks to a flashing it has become more agile. There are no paddle shifters, so for those who like to shift gears manually, the selector in their hands: from themselves - down, towards themselves - up. Racing scheme! That's just the feeling is not racing. If you overdo it with the speed in the turn, Compass begins to smoothly and predictably slide outward with all wheels, giving time to respond, - quite a well-mannered cowboy! But steering feedback is clearly lacking. In turns, the effort increases, but the steering wheel does not become more informative.

Here is the final goal - a jeep bivouac near Cape Roca, the westernmost point of Eurasia. I switch to the off-road version of the Trailhawk: the engine and gearbox are the same, but the beveled front bumper provides an angle of entry of 30 degrees (the regular version has only 17 degrees), and the developed protection covers not only engine compartment, but also fuel tank. Ground clearance increased from 198 to 216 mm - a record in the class!

I advised the Yankees to completely abandon the standard bumper - with it, the geometric cross-country ability is worse, and the appearance is less rough. It's like a cowboy without a Colt and a Stetson hat.

And the interior of the Trailhawk is cockier. It's not about the red accents, it's about the seats. Their backs are narrower, the central segment is lined with fabric, so they hold securely in turns. And there is more space above your head - the roof is ordinary.

On good roads, the Compass Trailhawk is slightly less nimble than the Limited version. The increased clearance turned into deep rolls in corners. But the wheel seemed to me more "sociable", informative.

Before the exit to the clearing, I transfer the Selec-Terrain driving electronics tuning system to the Rock position (standard cars do not have this “preset” - only Auto, Mud, Sand and Snow). The road went broken, but quite travel - we do not have such a dacha leading to every dacha. I spurred my horses on and drove in rally style. Nice pendant!

But here the road ran into a steep slope. Offhand - thirty degrees. At the bottom, off-road instructors hang out: “Son, turn on the permanent four-wheel drive and use the downshift. Serious obstacles lie ahead."

Start! The hood flips up and the Compass climbs skyward, treading over soccer-ball-sized rocks. Not bad, very good! Even on large boulders, with a little pushing up and allowing short slips, Compass did not stop, but crawled forward. The key to success is "toothy" tires and "reduction": in fact, this is an ultra-short first gear (gear ratio of 20.4), which is not used in other modes. Such a scheme cannot replace a full-fledged demultiplier, but it is better than nothing.

Thanks to the long-travel suspension (170 mm in front and 200 mm in the rear), the wheels retain their grip for a long time. And with diagonal hanging, the stabilization system successfully imitates inter-wheel blocking. In terms of cross-country ability, the Trailhawk is one of best crossovers in the segment, if not the best. Real Jeep! After him, you don’t even want to look at the usual versions.

Too bad we didn't get to try it out. gasoline cars. Interestingly, in Europe, Compass will be offered with Fiat 1.4-liter turbo engines, and instead of them they will be offered the aspirated Tigershark series, which, depending on the degree of forcing, develops 150 or 180 hp.

The Russian representative office of Compass sees it as a bestseller of the brand. The start of sales is scheduled for November-December.

Prices? It was only possible to find out that in the Compass database it will not be more expensive than two million rubles, and in total three configuration options are planned. Rivals in input modifications will be cheaper. But the “entrance” of the Jeep is completely different: all-wheel drive and automatic!

Of course, Compass will not be chosen by the mind, but by the heart. For courageous appearance, for charisma. For rudeness, in the end. And I'm glad for that. Sugary and weak crossovers are already sickening.

For this money, among other things, an adaptive cruise appears, automatic braking, lane retention, xenon with automatic long-range, the ability (for an extra charge) to paint the roof black, body chrome decor, dual-zone climate, multimedia with a decent display, and more.

However, the "panorama" and the skin (you can even with ventilation in the front) - about 200 thousand more on top, another 100 for the top-end multimedia with a large display and trendy Beats acoustics. You will also have to pay for big wheels(up to 19 inches), and for preferences in body color. Total Compass "at maximum speed" tends to the amount as much as 2.8 million rubles. But on the other hand, with any level of minced meat, Compass has four-wheel drive, a “big” 2.4 engine and an automatic machine with finely chopped 9 gears.

Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging among the options, and in general there is nowhere to attach the phone.

The interior meets with spaciousness, original design and ... a bunch of small miscalculations in terms of convenience. So, the front seat cushions are short and narrow, so not every driver can sit comfortably. The block of climate, music and auxiliary functions is arranged strangely, and is located low. Aspirated 2.4 is strangled by firmware for Russia (for tax purposes) from a power of 175 forces to 150. But the volume and, accordingly, the torque are still sufficient: 229 N∙m is about the same as for more powerful ones (on average from 170 forces ) competitors with engines of 2.4-2.5 liters. Therefore, a clear lack of traction, despite the modest number of horses, in most situations will not have to be experienced. In general, the crossover rides adequately on the motor, but without revelations - for exciting accelerations, turn to the Tiguan or CX-5.

But if you do not skimp on the third and most expensive version of the Compass - Trailhawk for 2,349,000 rubles - then you can get not only improved off-road potential, but also a little more dynamics on the pavement. Because the 175-horsepower engine is not deformed here, and in addition to this, a shorter main couple- 4.33 vs. 3.73. In general, this is done in order to imitate the "lower". A side effect was more nimble acceleration and reduced maximum speed - after all, all other gear ratios in the Compass box are the same.

But the main thing in Trailhawk is centimeters under the bottom and electronic settings that put this version on a par with rare "off-road" crossovers like Subaru Forester. The initially rather big 207 mm is increased to 216 here, the bumpers are beveled, there is a metal underbody protection - all this has improved geometric passability"Compass". Another feature is the ability to activate a virtual downshift (20:1). Then the transmission locks the clutches all-wheel drive, leaves only the first stage in the box and turns on the slip mode in the torque converter - have you seen something like this on Mazda or Hyundai?

With sharp starts on slippery surfaces, there is a delay in connecting the rear drive (design feature - see the caption for the photo above). This can be a little annoying in the winter (like you're driving underdrive), but shouldn't be a problem off-road because there's a button to positively lock both clutches. It makes no sense to talk about handling, because the car is completely devoid of a sporty character - unlike the same Mazda CX-5 or Volkswagen Tiguan.

This is a weighty crossover in the spirit of the brand, which, instead of the playfulness of the chassis, offers ground clearance, comfort and impenetrability of the suspension. Everything that more sporty rivals win back on the straight and in the corners, the Compass will take back on the speed bumps and the road repair site. The energy intensity of the suspension makes it possible not to stand on ceremony with irregularities, and the overall high level of driving comfort is also ensured by a decent “shumko”.

The new generation Jeep Compass was first unveiled to the public at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. And a few days later, the production of the model began in Brazil. But at the same time it is planned to sell in more than 100 countries of the world.

FIAT's new Compass should sit somewhere between the Renegade and Cherokee. The total range of engines includes 17 units. Here are all kinds of diesel and gasoline engines of different sizes and capacities. In the same Brazil, there are two car configurations:

  • In the base, it is equipped with an atmospheric 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of 2 liters and a power of 166 Horse power. This engine also capable of driving on alcohol.
  • More expensive equipment equipped with a 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a volume of 2.0 liters and a capacity of 170 horsepower.

The Jeep Compass II is built on a FCA Small Wide 4×4 scalable suspension with a transversely mounted engine and independent front suspension. The suspension has MacPherson struts with gas-filled dampers and transverse stabilizer. In general terms, we can say that this car is very good and promising, especially considering the manufacturer's statement that the Jeep Compass 2 has the highest cross-country ability among all models of the brand. In any case, almost nothing is known about this model, and what it will be like with us, time will tell, but in any case, we can say that it will not disappoint its owner. After all, an SUV with such a great design, endowed with many functions and made of quality materials, just can't be bad.
