The Izh Jupiter motorcycle is one of the brightest pages of the domestic motorcycle industry. He decorated the streets of Soviet cities and villages for several decades. The name "Jupiter" in Izhevsk was called a road motorcycle, which differed from another model of the same class ("Izh Planet") only in the number of engine cylinders. The name of both models is fully consistent with the spirit of the era of space exploration. One incident is connected with the name "Jupiter": on the tank of a motorcycle, the designers placed an emblem with a stylistic image of a planet with planetary rings, which is easily recognizable not as Jupiter, but as Saturn. In total, five generations of "Jupiters" and a large number of their modifications, which sometimes differed very slightly from each other, saw the light.

The first motorcycle of the same name was first introduced to the general public as Izh-58 and only then renamed Jupiter. The first generation of the model was produced from 1961 to 1966.

It's no secret that Jupiters have been criticized for their unreliability and poor build quality. The situation was considered normal when the owner of the motorcycle, immediately after the purchase, himself held out all the threaded connections, fixed minor problems (oil leakage, poor contact or wiring short circuit). After several thousand kilometers (sometimes earlier), we had to solve the eternal problem of synchronizing the operation of the cylinders, which the single-cylinder Izh Planet did not have. In this regard, the "Izhevsk single-barrel" was more reliable and, accordingly, in demand.

In the fifth generation, power was sacrificed in favor of improved mid-range torque performance. The release of the modification "Izh Jupiter-5-020-03" with a liquid cooling system was the culmination and at the same time the "swan song" of the manufacturer. In 2008, the production of motorcycles in Izhevsk was curtailed.

The specifics of the Soviet industry forced manufacturers to unify the designs of different models as much as possible. As a result, the frames of the Jupiters and many other components are interchangeable with each other, and in terms of the details of the CPG, the motorcycles are unified with the K-175 (Kovrovets) and other ZID (Voskhod) models.

And if we take into account that the market in the Soviets, one might say, was topsy-turvy, then it was not “demand that gave rise to supply”, but vice versa - supply gave rise to demand - once something of high quality and affordable appeared in access, then you need to take it. But this did not mean that the developers approached their business carelessly. The proof of this is two motorcycles of the IZH series - Jupiter 5 and Planet 5.

This model was first released in 1985, already at the time of Perestroika and Gorbachev. In terms of its parameters - speed, carrying capacity and engine power, "Jupiter" was not at that time a model with advanced characteristics. Yes, the ability to cut through the track at 120 km / h was very, very tempting, especially if back seat a pretty girl squealed happily, but to say that it was something transcendental is by no means impossible.

And the fact that the motorcycle could withstand no more than 170 kg of live weight at a time was also not particularly joyful, since, in fact, two adult men might not fit there, so to speak. Of course, a motorcycle sidecar solved the problem, but this is an additional cost that no one is happy about. However, all this suggests that the "Jupiter" was not the best in its class, but not that this model turned out bad. Now about the "Planet"

The popularity of the 5th "Jupiter" sought to shake the motorcycle of the same factory, only another series, no less famous and popular - "Planet". Already the 5th variation of one of the most popular motorcycles in the USSR left the assembly line in 1987.

And I must say, with the "Jupiter" they were on a par. The same maximum acceleration speed is 120 km / h, but these are not sportbikes, so it is quite acceptable. In terms of carrying capacity, it is worth noting that “Planet” still lost to “Jupiter” - 150 kg versus 170 kg, respectively, but such indicators were not critical, since the first and second were not designed for a serious load, but for everything else there was motorized carriage. In general, both motorcycles won their audience, and not only gained wide popularity in the USSR itself, but also retained it in the post-Soviet space.

A little about the differences

But despite the general similarity, they were still different models motorcycles, and differences in design were still observed. Here "Jupiter" was two-cylinder, and "Planet" - single-cylinder.
