New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport – do I want to be Prado? Pros and cons

How did the unforgettable Bulat Shalvovich sing there: “There are few of them left, and this is our pain”? Well, he didn’t sing exactly like that, I agree, but the fact remains: they, in the sense of real SUVs, there are just nothing left on the market, one, two, and even counted ... But those who need not a crossover and not a premium SUV, and it is a hard worker for all occasions, in our country there are still enough unkempt directions and evergreen tomatoes. Therefore, the appearance of the new Pajero Sport was met quite favorably. Only now this benevolence turned out to be some kind of platonic and theoretical: in two quarters of 2016 and four months of 2017, a little more than 700 cars were sold. Why?

There are quite a few reasons, but one of them was clearly the lack of diesel version. It is worth recalling that for one Pajero Sport of the previous generation sold, equipped with a gasoline V6, there were 9 diesel ones ... Last July, Mitsubishi employees swore and swore that there would certainly be a diesel engine, and finally, their promises came true. So there is reason to believe that if the ratio mentioned above remains for the third generation of the model with the factory index QE, then sales of the brand will rush up like an interceptor fighter raised on alarm. Or do not rush? What will the diesel Pan Sportsman look like in business and in everyday life? You won't understand until you try...

Design against terrain

I must say that at the first meeting, the new Pajero Sport made an ambiguous impression on me. On the one hand, the car looks really impressive. Ahead - predatory "mandibles" with chrome edging, muscular, well-defined tubercles wheel arches, an energetic profile, a window sill line boldly running up, triangles flowing onto the wings rear lights, continuing with sharp punching, and symmetrical punching on front fender, an abundance of chrome parts ...

Both the front and rear lighting fixtures are distinguished by intricate shapes. Especially the rear, with a blade flowing down to the level of the bumper. Yes, the third Sport is no longer just a hard worker, made by screwing a simple station wagon body onto a light truck chassis. And yet the design of this model is very ambiguous. For my taste - too pretentious, and there are too many individual details.

But even that is not important... Mitsubishi Pajero Sport at its core is a classic frame SUV, that is, a vehicle that combines sufficient comfort with utility and the ability to overcome serious off-road obstacles. And now tell me, honestly, will it be easy to decide to use all this complex Dinamic Shield (this is the name Japanese designers came up with to describe the geometry of the front end) in order, for example, to break a road through the bushes or demolish the edge of some ditch? Or such a question: where can I find a plane for attaching a winch hawse? After all, an SUV is a car that will get stuck in places that the crossover simply cannot reach. So if you start using the Pajero Sport's cross-country ability to its fullest, you will certainly find yourself in such abysses that you cannot do without a winch. Now you have realized all this, you have matured your readiness to go through seven circles of administrative hell to make changes to the TCP ... But where to put the winch?

Or take the beautiful footboards included in standard equipment. In the city, they will certainly be both appropriate and useful. Here you are helping to climb into the cabin of some miniature young lady in a miniskirt: “Here, dear, on the bandwagon, let me help you ...” And “in the pampas”? Something I strongly doubt that these steps can perform the function of power protection thresholds, but geometric passability they worsen, and quite noticeably.

Curb weight

Well, with my height, the steps only prevent me from getting into the cab: after all, the Pajero Sport frame has a completely progressive shape with ascending front and rear branches, so the pillows driver's seat are not too high. And after mud baths, they generally need to be feared: soiling trousers on their edges is a spit.

Smartphone positioning problem

There are certain questions about the organization of the internal space of the car. Even at the first meeting with an SUV, I noted that it was a bit cramped for me in the driver's seat. You sit down in a chair, and a line from Vysotsky starts spinning in your head: “here the orderlies rushed in, fixed us” ...

In the Russian representative office of Mitsubishi, they do not get tired of repeating: “we do not position our cars as premium ones!” Well, premium, not premium, but you can’t call Pajero Sport “budget” any more. The price of the Ultimate package is very close to the bar of 3 million rubles, and in the case of the diesel version, it exceeds it. And here the question arises: are you ready to put up with a resonant, like a drum, hard plastic of the front panel at such a price?

A truly budget model would easily be forgiven for the lack of places to place all sorts of little things on the road, primarily phones, and an insufficient number of 12-volt sockets and USB jacks. Yes, the new touchscreen media system has built-in Apple CarPlay apps and Android Auto, and you can integrate your smartphone and enjoy a wide variety of services. But where to put this smartphone? I did not find any suitable place in the front cabin, except to place it in a cup holder.

The second row of seats is quite spacious, but its inhabitants are not supposed to have any additional life benefits. Even controlled air ducts appeared only on cars in 2017 model year. But there were no 12-volt sockets, no USB slots for connecting all sorts of gadgets, as there were no.

I want to see close!

But most of all, I had questions about the layout driver's seat and visibility. No, there are no problems in the city and on the highway (although with my 182 centimeters of height I had to move the seat back all the way), but it’s worth moving into the “pampas” ...

Trunk volume

673 / 1,624 liters

The fact is that Pajero Sport belongs to the “low” SUVs with a “semi-commander”, almost easy landing. As a result, a massive hood covers everything that is directly in front of the car. The fact that on the pavement objects that are at road level are already out of sight for 20-30 meters does not bother anyone. But off-road, I want to see what is directly in front of the bumper! And it’s not just that you want it, sometimes it’s vital. Of course, I tried to raise the seat higher, but my head stuck into the roof, and the seat itself shifted forward. Moving the steering wheel, which is now adjustable both in angle and in reach, did not help either. It remains to hope for a system of circular video review, which still needs to be learned to understand.

"Superherring" as a masterpiece

The off-road platform itself is beyond doubt. The Pajero Sport arsenal has huge moves and the highest energy intensity of suspensions, mechanical blocking rear axle and of course the transmission. Super Select II with a solid downshift in the transfer case.

Super Select, or “super herring” in Jeeper jargon, is a real masterpiece of engineering, a box that allows you to combine the advantages of a forced front axle circuit and permanent all-wheel drive with a center differential. The only thing missing was a high-torque diesel, but it didn't keep us waiting too long. So if we already, in fact, talk about all the innovations that appeared in the third Pajero Sport, now God himself ordered to focus on the behavior of the diesel version.

Moreover, the organizers of the test drive laid a really interesting route, which included highways, and narrow mountain serpentines, and rather difficult sections of mountain off-road. In addition, we had both diesel and gasoline cars at our disposal. In general, one could compare one's sensations, if not in the same areas, then at least in very similar conditions.

asphalt round

Let's start with asphalt, because the owners of Pajero Sport, as a rule, do not live on distant cordons in abandoned forestries, but in cities. Accordingly, their off-road extreme usually begins with fairly long trips, first around the city, and then along country roads.

Under these conditions, of course, the championship remains with the petrol V6. It seems that the difference in dynamics is not so great: a diesel engine accelerates a two-ton vehicle to “hundreds” in 12.3 seconds, and a three-liter V6 in 11.7, but subjectively this is felt very sharply. However, at urban speeds, this difference is minimal, and the fact that gasoline engine yet slightly more responsive, offset by the excess torque of the compression-ignition engine, allowing acceleration without downshifting.

The car maneuvers well in cramped conditions: its turning radius is only 5.6 meters. Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that even on the road of the second category (the width of the carriageway is 7.5 meters, plus meter shoulders), you will not be able to turn around in one step.

Fuel tank volume

In parking lots, a circular video review with dynamic markings helps a lot, and when changing lanes on multi-lane highways, the BSW system (Blind Spot Warning, warning about the presence of objects in blind zones). The sensors of this system are clearly visible on outer edges rear bumper. The Forward Collision Mitigation System (FCM) does not remain without work: it brakes the Pajero Sport as you would expect from a heavy and inert car, namely with some laziness.

Much more difference in the behavior of the versions is felt on country roads, especially two-lane ones. It is generally not easy to overtake on Caucasian serpentines, even if you are driving a car with a sporty character, but overtaking on a diesel Pajero Sport does require a special skill.

Average consumption fuel per 100 km

And here it’s not enough just to switch to manual gear shifting: you need to take into account that at around 4000 rpm the “red zone” begins. Accordingly, it is worth letting go of the truck being overtaken by at least 50-60 meters, wait for a moment, switch to a couple of gears down, and then, already during acceleration, switch up again. Actually, an eight-speed automatic would do about the same thing, but with an even greater stretch in time, and switching down on kickdown also does not happen instantly. In the case of a gasoline engine, some delays are also observed, but the motor itself is still more responsive, and it spins up to 5-6 thousand revolutions without any problems, so overtaking through oncoming traffic is still somewhat easier.

And what I really like is the sound insulation, both in the “lighter” and in the version with a heavy fuel engine.

We say "diesel", we mean "extreme"

But as soon as you turn from asphalt to mountain primers, the picture changes exactly the opposite. On climbs that the diesel Pajero Sport just doesn't notice, the petrol car's box still needs to switch down a couple of gears. Where on diesel car you drive in 4H or, in extreme cases, 4HLc mode, that is, by locking the Torsen center differential, on petrol car it is better to turn on a lower gear, otherwise, even on small climbs, the engine will have to be turned, and the wheels will begin to slip into slip. Well, on steep descents, the diesel version slows down the engine much more efficiently: even in very extreme places you can get by downshift and switching the box to manual mode. And then it's up to you: if you want to go down faster, choose second gear, if you want to completely sneak - first.

On a car with a petrol V6, it is still better to turn on the special downhill mode. By the way, for long-distance travel with elements of extreme sports, the diesel version is also much better suited, primarily because of the much greater fuel autonomy. On-board computer gasoline car dispassionately recorded that during off-road exercises the consumption exceeded 30 liters per 100 km, and for the diesel version this figure did not exceed 12 liters.

I also appreciated the work of electronic auxiliary modes. Actually, I like the Japanese approach to this issue. If the British engineers in the first system of this kind entrusted electronics with a lot, including blocking the center and wheel differentials, the Japanese left only the modes of operation of the box and the response of the engine to the gas pedal in the hands of artificial intelligence. Well, the ESP mode of operation, of course.

Indeed, in the "gravel" mode, stabilization works quite actively, but in the "stones" mode, it simply turns off. In the "snow / mud" mode, you most clearly feel how much more "long" the gas pedal becomes. In general, useful modes, although in Pajero Sport they are purely auxiliary. For example, the driver is invited to solve the issue of locking the rear differential on his own. On the proposed route, I did not need blocking, although in one place, on the ascent of the stone "stairs", the car got into a situation of diagonal hanging. I didn’t skid, rolled back a meter and a half and decided that I would try a different trajectory, if the car didn’t go along it, then I would break on the block. Went…

Where are the wheels going?

Overall, as you'd expect, the Pajero Sport feels very confident off-road, in mud, rocks, and fords. Yes, he does not like deep ruts, and you need to be very careful on the terrain: you can easily hit those same footboards on some hillock, up to the separation of these very footboards. In particular, for this reason, the situation with not too good overview forward and down really strained me.

Owner reviews

By landing — while looking for my place. My back hurts, and because I am either in clothes or not, I have to adjust the chair. Of the chair adjustments, I noted the peculiarity that the seat cushion rises in the same way as on the Pajero Sport 2. The back part does not just go down, but back and down. Not habitual.

The review, as many have noted, is worse, but it is compensated by the presence of cameras in a circle and parking sensors. Passengers are very comfortable in all places, while there are more rear seats than in the 2nd generation Pajero. The only thing is that I drive passengers, including my wife, so that they do not leave scratches on door handles and polished inserts with their metal chains on bags and clothes.

The engine has not yet been run in, as the consumption is too big in my opinion, and I really don’t have enough torque at a speed of 100 km / h. Compared to a diesel engine, again, although the MPS2 has a five-speed automatic transmission, but here it has an eight-speed one. In general, we get used to each other.

Video review

Apparently they spent a lot in Mitsubishi serious work over the mistakes, but again it was not without jambs. I'll start with the look. It's an SUV! What for him this "manicure" in the form of chrome inserts? Roof rails do not inspire confidence at all, I think that you can forget about a normal expeditionary worker or collective farm something of your own.

Why removed plastic arch extensions? I bought additional arch extensions (64,000 rubles). The lower part of the bumpers is painted in body color. What for? I had to buy additional protection for the corners of the bumpers (58,000 rubles). I think we need to buy more lining on the doors, because here they didn’t even bother to glue the molding.

Salon: everything is much better here. The chairs are more comfortable, the handles are in place. However, the tunnel between the front seats has painted plastic, I think that it will rub off on the pants during the first year of operation and it will be necessary to farm something again.

Multimedia: modern, but not exciting. Somehow in Chinese. And for some reason, the USB was hidden in the armrest. Uncomfortable.

Review of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 diesel 2.4 with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission

Where can I buy?

Bomb car. Smoothly powerfully goes on a cruise of 120 km / h, on the tachometer 1,900 - 2,000 rpm - beauty. Consumption on Moscow gasoline (LUKOIL) at a speed of 120 km / h on a cruise on the computer is 11.5 liters, and on the tank - 13 liters.

The suspension on the new Pajero Sport 3 does not work like on the Prado, you go there like a ship on the waves and all the bumps are swallowed like a stone thrown into the water, but here it resembles a rubber ball, smoothly passes the bumps at a reasonable speed, but if you go too far with speed, it will win back smoothly, but resiliently - somehow it is more knocked down compared to Toyota.

The owner drives a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 3.0 (209 HP) 2016.

Noise isolation — it's just awesome! WITH previous generation The models don't even compare. I just don't hear cars around - that's one thing. Second: I can't hear the engine at all, and even when I hit 4,000 rpm, I only hear the roar exhaust pipe in the area of the trunk and rear passenger seats. And the engines seem to be non-existent.

Music, thanks to the excellent noise, sounds great - 8 speakers are quite good. Rulitsya new Mitsubishi Pajero 3 is very easy, the buttons on the steering wheel are very pleasant to the touch and to press.

The view cameras are good, but I think it's better to use them when there is really little space and you need to park with the precision of space shuttles.

Hodovka — just a song. Swallows holes many times better than the previous Pajero Sport. It looks like everything has been redone and done all over again. The butt no longer bounces and punches through the rear suspension.

Braking is very good and easy. Pleased hand brake v in electronic format. I pulled a small key and that's it. The pedals are very soft.

Another flagship has rolled off the assembly line of the Japanese concern - the third-generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport more than justifies its sporting role. A 6-cylinder MIVEC (6B31) gasoline engine with a displacement of 3 liters and an 8-speed automatic AISIN help him to achieve unconditional leadership in terms of speed and handling.

In Russia, the new Pajero Sport will go on sale in two trim levels - Ultimate and Instyle. Owners of both versions are offered:

  • luxury leather upholstery:
  • beautiful LED optics;
  • modern audio system;
  • separate climate control;
  • Rear View Camera.

Exclusively for countries located in the cold climate zone, including for the Russian buyer - wheel and a second row of heated seats. For more comfort parking brake connected to the electric drive, the driver and passenger seats have many adjustments, and to give the perfect look on the outside, 18-inch alloy wheels are installed on the wheels.

Mitsubishi offered a new vision of comfort

Heated steering wheel

Heated all seats

Electronic parking brake

The new SUV will not let you feel tired after a long journey - a lot of pre-installed options are given to help the driver:

ASTC system exchange rate stability : you don't have to adjust braking force when cornering - the system will calculate everything and do it itself in order to maintain the stability of the car. Its function also includes traction optimization - this will help not to lose torque during slipping, while simultaneously controlling engine power and creating the required braking force.

UMS - parking assistant: Helps prevent collision with an obstacle while parking. If the driver presses the accelerator pedal too hard by mistake, UMS will minimize the engine speed, thereby helping to avoid a collision.

BSW - your "eyes" in the blind spots: The system will alert the driver if there is an obstacle in the blind spot. For this, special indicators were placed in the cabin, allocating them a place on dashboard and on the rear view mirrors.

Forward Collision Warning FCM: operates in tandem with a radar designed to scan traffic situation in front of the car. If the distance to the person in front vehicle decreases, the system will issue a warning signal when dangerous thresholds are reached.

Unique technical solutions helped to improve speed and driving characteristics

The developers managed to make a small technological revolution - the new Pajero Sport in the third generation is equipped with an advanced automatic transmission Super Select 4 WD-II. The designers claim that they have outdone themselves with the creation of the latest all-wheel drive mechanism. Its advantages:

  • speed switching is available in 8 ranges;
  • high level of comfort noted by drivers;
  • profitability;
  • new transmission oil MITSUBISHI MOTORS GENUINE ATF-MA1 reduces losses by completely preventing friction. With its use, the performance of the car in cold weather has improved;
  • built-in cooling radiator.

The system will help to cope with off-road OFF ROAD MODE designed to optimize traction on any surface, from coarse gravel to mirror-like icy surfaces. To do this, just switch the special lever on the panel until the desired mode appears on the screen. The electronics will do the rest: the system will select the necessary parameters for the operation of the engine, brake mechanism and transmission.
