The fact is that at speeds noticeably higher than 100-110 km / h, the short base of the car and the rather serious windage of the body can turn a trip along the highway into an exciting, but by no means safe attraction. The Chevrolet Spark owes its life to nearly 2 million Internet users who voted in 2007 for the serial future of the Beat concept car. Spark premiered in Geneva in 2009, and in the same fall it began to be sold in Korea as Daewoo Matiz.

The second generation of the Chevrolet Spark hatchback was presented to the Russians at the last Moscow Motor Show, prices were announced in October. But it took time to organize production in Uzbekistan instead of the former Matiz. The first "live" cars came to dealers recently. Finally, the General Motors office invited us to get acquainted with Spark in the role most suitable for him - a nimble city slicker.

Externally, I definitely like the hatchback. Due to the huge full-wing headlights, a large branded false radiator grille with a golden “butterfly” and a swift wedge-shaped profile, the small car seems to be trying to look more mature and more serious than it really is. However, despite the swollen flared sides, cheeky little spoiler and fancy camouflaged handles rear doors a la Alfa Romeo, Spark invariably makes others smile.

Spark was almost on the threshold of the B-class, waving relative to its predecessor by 15 cm in length and as much as ten in width.

An unusual "motorcycle" instrument panel, perched on a height-adjustable steering column, evokes ambivalent feelings. Undoubtedly, a spectacular solution, including thanks to the signature blue backlight. However, the right sector of the panel with a non-linear tachometer scale, digital fuel gauge and trip computer display is less informative than the analog speedometer located on the left. But the texture of the front panel leaves a positive impression, thanks to which the hard gray material does not look cheap, unlike the plastic in the old Spark. Well-fitted into the center console, the audio system and the climate control unit are framed by a glossy overlay with a small pattern, somewhat reminiscent of carbon fiber weaving, for greater effect. Even in the cabin of such a baby as the Spark, the Jimmy managed to comply with the proprietary design principle of symmetrical zones for the driver and passenger. A plump steering wheel with a slightly recessed central part is not bad. As in the familiar Chevrolet Cruze sedan, the colored front panel lining is logically continued on the doors.

However, Spark barks without biting. Even for a crumb with a curb weight of less than a ton, the motor is rather weak. On the bottoms, it doesn’t matter: the peak of the moment falls as much as 4800 rpm. I find myself thinking that the Spark is no faster than my wife's Kia Picanto with a 65-horsepower 1.1 engine and an "automatic". Spark's manual box also somewhat disappointed with the low information content of the drive, and its lever is also located, in my opinion, too close to the driver.

  • The front seats are comfortable enough in shape, but the synthetic upholstery is slippery and doesn't "breathe". What the GM people call seat height adjustment is just adjusting the angle of the cushion. The pedal assembly is not so cramped, but there is no platform for the left foot.

In order to start briskly and not hold back the flow, the motor has to turn inside out. Spark is rather reluctant to respond to fuel supply, and the dynamics further suffer from the included air conditioning, which takes away vital forces from the engine. But even if it is disabled, a set of 100 km / h takes subjectively much more than the declared 12.9 s. On the one hand, two people and several bags are traveling in a car. On the other hand, it is embarrassing to think about what will happen at full load.

You can open the trunk with a key or a lever in the cabin near the driver's seat - there is no handle on the outside. With the rear seats folded down, the tiny 170-litre compartment grows to 994 litres.

Spark boasts an unprecedented number of niches and pockets in the cabin. There is even a mesh pocket on the side of the passenger seat, not to mention the backs, doors and five cup holders.

Against the background of mediocre dynamics, the brakes turned out to be surprisingly tenacious, the front ventilated discs and the rear drums. The light hatchback slows down from any speed with enviable intensity. Keep your distance, those behind you! But the suspension - McPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear - contrary to the cocky appearance, turned out to be tuned more for comfort than for drive. Easily and painlessly jumping over speed bumps, easily coping with pits and potholes, Spark at the same time is quite rolled and leans noticeably when maneuvering at speed and in slow turns.

The legend received from the organizers led us to an industrial area full of tractors, truck cranes and trucks. Yes, there is now only one familiar device in front of the driver’s eyes - an orthodoxly round speedometer, and all other traffic information comes from a strange remote control attached to the speedometer on the right. It displays - apart from the tachometer - air temperature, odometer, and the distance that can be overcome on the remaining fuel. And what is important: the readings of the eccentric device are perfectly visible through the steering wheel rim.

There are configurations with a 1.2 engine - it is supplemented only with "mechanics", there is 1.0 - with "mechanics" and "automatic". What do you want: faster, more difficult, or slower, more comfortable?! Novice drivers (and female drivers) are likely to choose a Spark with a gun, but for me, perhaps, a manual car will do.

However, it was not difficult; the only trouble I encountered in the new test Spark was an uninformative clutch pedal. It didn't take long for her to let go. Otherwise, everything is normal: the machine is assembled well, there were no extraneous sounds from anywhere, the knobs are pressed and rotated ...

Spark weighing only 864 kilograms accelerates to its "12 seconds to hundreds"; not lightning fast, of course, but the 1.2-liter engine cannot be called sluggish either. The engine rapidly picks up speed up to medium crankshaft speeds, however, approaching 4,500 rpm, its onslaught noticeably fades. The brakes are in perfect order: even when I braked urgently on dry pavement, I did not hear any rubber squeak or ABS crackle.

The Chevrolet Spark is not the epitome of driving comfort; there is still room for improvement in noise and vibration isolation; on bad roads, its suspension most often copes with single obstacles, but sometimes breaks through.

But in the management of the most compact Chevrolet is obedient like a racehorse to a jockey. Reactions to the steering wheel are quick and understandable, and the rolls are very slight, not like the previous generation of Spark. That's where it is - a spark! Returning to the one-liter modification, I note that I took the car in the initial configuration - with unpainted mirror housings, with conventional air conditioning instead of climate control, with a tightly fixed steering column ... And I must say that it is seriously inferior in comfort to the flagship version. Mainly due to poor soundproofing. More precisely, its complete absence.
