As is often the case, the father was replaced by the son. Karl Maybach, that was the name of Wilhelm's son, made adjustments to his father's invention. The six-cylinder engine was replaced by a more modern V12, which had a volume of 6922 cm3. First, such an innovation was tried on the DS-7.

In the thirtieth year, the Zeppelin appeared. It was a real masterpiece. It successfully combined both luxury and technical innovations. In Germany in the thirties, there were no better executive cars than Zeppelin.

Two hundred strong eight-liter V12 engine until 1938 was paired with a five-speed gearbox. In the 38th, the cars were already equipped with a seven-speed gearbox.

The total number of cars produced under the majestic name was only 183 copies. Since each of them was assembled to order, there were no identical cars. It is known that the first cars cost about 19.5 thousand Reichsmarks.

The most successful years

The thirties were the most successful years for Maybach. It was then that the main number of vehicles was released.

For three years (1931-1933) the company assembled the Maybach W6 model, which was equipped with a six-cylinder W5 engine. Starting in 1934, the car was equipped with a twin overdrive transmission. Both W6s differed from the original Maybach W5 in that they had a longer wheelbase. These models collected nine dozen.

For seven years (1930-1937), the company assembled relatively inexpensive cars - Doppel-Sechs-Halbe. In literal translation into Russian, this name sounds like: "half of twelve cylinders."

From the name itself it is clear that the engine is equipped with six cylinders. As for the volume, it was 5.2 liters. With this ratio, the car had the power of 130 "horses". The volume of issue is small - 34 copies.

The production of passenger cars had to be abandoned as soon as Germany entered the active phase of hostilities. The seizure of territories required a huge amount of military equipment. Like many other enterprises, the company was retrained to produce military products.

In 1909, the Maybach company was founded, which was given its name by the famous engineer and designer Wilhelm Maybach, who previously worked in the Daimler concern, but left it after the conflict in 1907. The turning point came in 1918, when, as a result of the war, the production of any military and aviation equipment in Germany was prohibited. However, Wilhelm Maybach did not resume the work of his company, instructing his son to find buyers for all the company's production facilities. But luck again found the Maybachs, this time in the person of the Dutch company Spiker, which ordered 1000 automobile power units from father and son.

The engine for Spiker was a 5.7-liter six-cylinder engine with 70 horsepower. In the first year, 150 W2 engines were produced, but between 1921 and 1925, production dropped to 50 units per year, due to the deteriorating economic situation of the Dutch company, which declared itself bankrupt at the end of 1925. Since then, Wilhelm Maybach has made the decision to produce cars on his own.

First model Maybach The W3 was introduced in 1921, winning an award for original design, and under the hood of the model is the W2 engine, with the same 5.7 liters as for the Spiker brand. However, while maintaining the rest of the technical characteristics, buyers of the new model could choose the specifications for themselves, which significantly increased the price of the car. In the same year, exclusive modifications with engines of 90 and 100 horsepower were presented, which were supplied for modifications with a coupe and convertible body.

In 1929, the Maybach 12 model was introduced, equipped with the same seven-liter engine, but already with a capacity of 150 horsepower. Due to the increase in power, the mass of the car was significantly increased, which did not prevent the 12th model from becoming the leader in its class. In addition, the production of the DS8 modification began in 1930, which was equipped with an 8-liter twelve-cylinder power unit with a capacity of 200 horsepower. The car was dedicated to Wilhelm Maybach, who died in 1929.

During the reign of the Third Reich, the Maybach company became a monopoly in the production of engines for tanks, trains and ships. However, such a high position was explained not by the fact that the products of Karl Maybach's company were the best, but by the fact that he had friendly relations with the entire ruling elite of the Reich, including Adolf Hitler, who pandered to Karl in every possible way.

By the time the American aircraft bombed the Maybach factories, the company's products were installed on 95% of the tanks and artillery tractors, but due to increased demand, it had a number of shortcomings and technical miscalculations, which led to a conflict between Karl Maybach and Bormann. After the destruction of the plant, Karl Maybach was declared an enemy of the nation and, together with the engineers of the once largest automobile company in Germany, was expelled from the country. Maybach's new home was France, where until 1951 Karl tried to establish car production together with longtime partner Herman Spon, but many technical shortcomings not allowed to start mass production of new models of the brand. At the same time, Karl Maybach successfully worked for the French government, creating a whole range of powerful engines for the needs of the army.

In 1955, work began on the creation of an American-style Maybach car, but Karl himself did not like the car and hopes to revive production were abandoned. Karl Maybach died in 1960, and the Daimler concern became the new owner of the destroyed factories of the company in Germany and the engineering office in France. The Daimler management decided to rename the Maybach company and continue the production of power units at the facilities of the former competitor, so the MTU company was registered.

In 2006, the second generation of 57 and 62 models was introduced, which received more powerful power units from " Mercedes-Benz AMG”, but were criticized due to the lack of significant improvements that affected the price, which increased by 10% compared to 2005. In 2009, the cars were again upgraded, due to which the engine power increased to 640 horsepower, and two years later armored versions of the 57S and 62S were introduced.

In the same year, an official announcement was made about the imminent closure of the Maybach company. The reason for this was the inability to compete with Bentley Motors and Rolls-Royce. So, in 2013, the sale of all warehouse copies of models 57 and 62 of various modifications was opened with a 30% discount. And on December 1, 2012, a new price list was distributed to Daimler car dealers, where Maybach models were marked as discontinued. However, the design headquarters of the company was not disbanded, but moved to Mercedes-Benz, where he began work on a new generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. However, even after the official closure of the Maybach company, cars with this name continue to be produced. At the beginning of 2015, the luxurious Mercedes-Maybach S-Class was introduced, the design of which completely repeats the company's traditions, despite being the work of Mercedes.

The most talented German engineer Wilhelm Maybach stood at the origins of such a legendary brand as Mercedes. It was he who, working with Emil Jellinek, ensured that these cars of the company DMG (Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft) became so famous. However, in 1907 Maybach left the company. The reason is the conflict with Paul Daimler, son of the famous Gottlieb Daimler, who headed production after his father's death in 1900.

After leaving the company for which he had done so much, Maybach did not despair, but decided to establish his own production. What he did, registering in 1909, together with his son Karl, Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH. Initially, the company was engaged in engines for Count Zeppelin's airships. Somewhat later, the production of aircraft engines began. The need for them became especially acute after the outbreak of the First World War.

After the defeat of Germany in the war, the company changes its name to Maybach Motorenbau GmbH. Under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, now it can not produce aircraft engines. The Maybachs decide to get down to earth and start making engines for cars and locomotives. Times were very difficult and the company could barely make ends meet. For some time it is possible to survive at the expense of the Dutch Spyker, but in 1926 the latter went bankrupt. Then Karl Maybach decides to create his own car. Which is what was done. Luxurious cars began to appear, which were made with the most sophisticated whims of customers in mind. The first was the W3 model, then the W5 appeared - both of them were technically perfect, by the standards of that time. A little later, the W5 SG also appears.

Maybach Zeppelin (1930)

Wilhelm Maybach dies in 1929 and the company is now completely controlled by Karl. A year later, a magnificent Zeppelin model is created. This car became the most luxurious creation of that era. Its cost was 50,000 Reichsmarks, which was just a fabulous amount (the famous "Beetle" from Volkswagen cost only 990 Reichsmarks, which amounted to a worker's salary for almost a year). Not surprisingly, only 200 Zeppelins were produced in a few years. The German economy was in the deepest crisis, but, no matter how paradoxical it may sound, it was precisely such cars that it made sense to produce - those who had money could afford such a luxury, while the lower strata of the population still had no time for cars, regardless of whether how much they cost.

Second World War completely stopped the production of cars. Now in factories Maybach motorenbau assemble engines for "Tigers", "Panthers" and other tanks. The defeat of Germany finally finished off the company. At first she was engaged in the release aircraft engines for France, held repair work. It was a period of gloom. The founder of the Maybach car brand is famous primarily for the fact that it was he who had the honor in 1900 to design a car that gave the name to one of the most famous brands today - Mercedes. In 1904, he developed the first six-cylinder automobile engine with a capacity of 120 hp. With. In 1909, Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl founded their own company. At first, its main brainchild was not cars, but engines - including those for the famous Zeppelin airships. The SW35, released in 1935, had a six-cylinder engine and a much simpler control system than the Zeppelin. The next W5 model, released in 1926, was already equipped with a 7.0 liter engine, which allowed it to reach a speed of 121 km / h.

In the spring of 1929, just after celebrating Easter in Kanstatt, Wilhelm Maybach suddenly fell ill and died two days later at the age of 81. The Maybach company was headed by his son Karl Maybach.

Karl decided to replace the 6-cylinder engine with a V12 with a displacement of 6922 cm3. The first time it was installed on the brand DS7.
