Correct painting. Self-painting car body. The choice of paint and the basic rules for its application

To say that you will be pleasantly surprised when you hear on the phone or read on the website of a car service the cost of local painting of parts of your car, or, even more full painting means to say nothing.

car painting technology

And you need to paint. The time has already come for a complete painting of the car, or a situation has arisen when you need to do it further. Output? There is always a way out. It consists in painting the car body with your own hands. Don't worry, everything will work out for you. Just before you start painting, practice on the old body parts, which are in abundance around any garages.

Let's start by revealing a "secret" to you. Auto painting technology general principles actions, it doesn’t matter if you want to produce, or paint in metallic, paint a body part, or carry out.

The difference will be only in the selection of materials for painting and the time you spend. Do not forget to include here the material and time for training - training painting. A little more time, a little more materials, but the experience gained is worth it.

So, we will conditionally divide the technology of painting a car into the following areas:

  • Stages of car painting.
  • Car painting process.
  • Vehicle painting technique.

But conditionally, because these areas of action can change or organically complement each other.

Stages of car painting

Preparation of material and equipment. What do you need to paint a car? Painting materials: putty, primer, paint and varnish, depending on the area and your choice of car color. standard.

The main elements of the equipment are: a grinder with circles, a building hair dryer, an airbrush, a compressor, sandpaper, a grinding planer.

Body preparation. This stage includes: washing the body, dismantling everything that does not need to be painted, repairing parts of the body if necessary, preparing the surface for puttying, puttying, priming the surface.

That's it, your car is ready for painting. But this requires preparation. The instructions for painting a car directly indicate the presence of a perfectly clean place when applying paint and varnish. Here we will make such a spray booth from the garage.

Site preparation. A stage that is rarely mentioned is the preparation of a place for painting. This place is the garage. standard garage 3x6 is not suitable for full painting, but it is ideal for local painting of body parts. The technique of painting a car completely requires at least a space of 4x6 meters.

We remove everything superfluous and perform a general cleaning of the premises. With a vacuum cleaner and "Dichlorvos" in summer time. Thus, we eliminate the possibility of dust, debris and insects to spoil your car painting efforts during the varnishing stage. Wet the walls, floor, ceiling with water. There is no need for puddles, but there should not be dry places either.

As an option: the garage from the inside, after full training bodies for painting, you can cover with plastic wrap. To do this, you just need to have adhesive tape and a film.

Car painting procedure

Each master has his own procedure for painting a car, but, nevertheless, there are basic principles that should be followed. All removable parts must be removed and painted locally. This applies to doors, optics, handles, moldings, etc. Those. the body of the car must remain "naked".

Painting parts should begin with internal or hidden surfaces. Exterior painting is carried out last, and it begins with the roof of the car.

car painting technique

car painting technique different types The paintwork is no different either. If you are using an aerosol can to remove chips and cracks, the instructions for use of the can are given on it.

When painting a car with an airbrush, it is important to withstand general rules painting techniques. They do not differ in complexity, but the quality of the layers depends on their implementation, and as a result, the appearance of the car.

  • for applying paint. Recommended No. 1.4. It all depends on the paint.
  • Compressor pressure selection. As a rule, 2.5 - 3 atm is optimal.
  • The distance of the spray gun nozzle from the surface to be painted is 150-250 mm.
  • Application layers. 2-3 coats of paint are recommended. Application movements should be uniform and it is important not to overdo it with the thickness of the layer to avoid smudges. Otherwise, this place will have to be repainted completely. The intervals between applying the layers should be 15-20 minutes to dry the paint.

Expert opinion

After painting, the coating is subject to various influences for several more weeks, despite the fact that the varnish hardens after a couple of days. Average better car do not use after painting for at least one and a half weeks for optimal paint crystallization and creation of a film on the surface. At this time, you can not use brushes for sweeping dust, avoid direct sunlight and precipitation on the coating. If there is no way to meet the deadline, then you should avoid traveling on country roads and over long distances. As for polishing, you can do this procedure only a month after painting. Until then, you can use the usual gentle paint care products containing wax.

Many motorists are wondering when it is possible to wash the car after painting and not harm the paintwork. You can wash the car, and even more so with high-pressure washers, only after two weeks. Someone washes a car after a couple of days, but in this case, there is a high probability of damage to the coating, especially if washed incorrectly. First of all, at least a month you need to exclude detergents with an aggressive chemical composition, you can not use household chemicals. It is advisable to use a soft sponge and clean water at first, it is better if it is flowing. Do not wash the car in the sun, because water drops can become real lenses and heat up certain areas, thus damaging the paintwork.

Here, in fact, such is the technology of painting a car. After painting, in 98% of cases a car is required.

Good luck to you car lovers.

Paintwork is a protective layer car body, preventing exposure to moisture, aggressive environments, chemicals. It also reduces the destructive effect of small mechanical damage, which results in the formation of foci of corrosion.

During the operation of a car, a layer of varnish and paint wears out, loses its properties, its original shade. You can restore the attractive appearance of the car if you know how to paint a car with your own hands, a step-by-step guide will help in high-quality performance.

Painting is a rather complicated procedure where certain skills cannot be dispensed with. But, having studied the prepared manual, it is quite possible to perform all the manipulations at home without the involvement of specialists.

A prepared room is one of the important conditions for successful do-it-yourself painting. This or another spacious object, well ventilated, with bright lighting. First, a thorough cleaning is carried out, which will prevent foreign particles and dirt from entering the coating. Dust is swept off the walls, wet cleaning is carried out. Walls, ceiling can be additionally tightened with a film.

What tool is needed for painting:

  • and spray gun - recommended for large volumes of work;
  • spray can - a solution suitable for local staining;
  • keys and screwdrivers - necessary for dismantling removable elements, which will prevent the ingress of pigment or the formation of other defects;
  • scraper, spatula, chisels and brushes - are used to create an ideal plane, eliminate flaws resulting from mechanical influences.

Choice of materials:

  • detergent, rags - required to clean the body, remove all contaminants;
  • degreaser - used for processing before applying putty, primer, pigment;
  • putty, primer, sandpaper - create the basis for spraying pigment and varnish;
  • masking tape, film - necessary for isolating non-removable elements;

Also selected suitable shade. This uses the vehicle's unique VIN or a computer program. For independent work, paint is selected that dries without heat treatment. To determine how many materials are needed, take into account the amount of work, the desired result.

The best way to paint your car is to start with a car wash. It is supposed to remove all contaminants, dust with water and detergent. Taking a degreaser or white spirit, it is easy to get rid of greasy traces, bitumen. This is important, so the working compositions are better applied, do not lose their properties.

  • bumpers, turn signals;
  • lighting equipment, mirrors;
  • shock protection, if used;
  • handles, locks;
  • numbers, janitors.

All parts are thoroughly washed and dried. Glass elements are pasted over with paper, film. Masking tape will be required to isolate the sealing gum.

According to the step-by-step guide, before painting is carried out , cleaning of defects and polishing of body components of the car is required. Good lighting is necessary for the quality of the stage. You can work in the garage or on the street.

Basic steps:

  • inspecting the car, with a colored marker or acrylic paint in a spray can, mark problem areas– dents, chips, deep scratches;
  • when re-evaluating, minor defects are identified and marked with a can;
  • using a chisel, large sandpaper, they clean problem areas;
  • important to minimize good coverage, creating a smooth transition;
  • having found dents, they are eliminated by hitting the prepared wooden guide from the inside with a rubber hammer;
  • if corrosion centers are detected, they are ground to a metal shine.

After stripping, irregularities remain. To paint a car with your own hands, following a step-by-step guide, you need to make the work surface perfect, because painting will show flaws.

Putty allows you to eliminate shortcomings, and it is better to carry out manipulations in the garage. Before applying the material, the body is once again inspected, dirt is removed, and it is degreased using special compositions or white spirit.

How to putty:

  1. It is recommended to use finishing compositions (polyester synthetic), characterized by a fine-grained structure, which will simplify grinding. Prepare spatulas, metal and rubber.
  2. Thinking about how much putty is needed, estimate the number of defects. But you need to prepare the composition in small portions - it dries quickly. To do this, use a metal sheet, plywood, containers with a flat bottom, so that the finished material is easy to get.
  3. The application is carried out vigorously, performing cross movements at an angle of 90 degrees. So, a flat, slightly protruding plane is created.
  4. All problem areas are treated. If grains appear, it means that the composition dries up and should not be used anymore.
  5. The treated areas are left to dry. How long it takes - usually 30-50 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity.
  6. Checking dryness is easy using a large sandpaper. If sticking does not occur during grinding, the composition is dry.

The process begins with the use of coarse sandpaper and ends with sandpaper with the lowest grit density - 600. You need to constantly check the surface to the touch, excluding the formation of defects. Some areas will need to be redone.

After removing dust, degreasing the surface, paste over all the places where paint will not be applied.

  • a primer is sprayed with a thin layer, but they go a little on a good coating (this is the primary layer that allows you to identify all defects);
  • defects that have arisen are eliminated;
  • a second coat of primer is applied after 4 hours;

Priming is a mandatory step, without which it is impossible to paint a car. This is the basis for any coating, providing a reliable bond with the metal. According to the step-by-step guide, it is recommended to choose a primer in a spray can, which will simplify application.

The paintwork of the parts around the treated areas is sanded with #1200 sandpaper, which will provide better adhesion to the new coating. Thus, it is easier to paint the whole car, but the guidelines also apply in situations where painting is required only for individual parts.

By properly preparing the car, garage and pigment, you can easily paint the body.

Thinking about how the master’s cars would be painted, it is worth studying the guide:

  1. Work begins with diluting the pigment to the optimum density. The solvent is added so that a thin thread of 1–2 mm is formed when pulled. As a result, the runoff should subside from 3 to 4 drops per second.
  2. It is desirable to strain the paint, and then pour it into the tank of a pre-configured spray gun. Masters advise choosing a nozzle No. 1.4 mm, setting the pressure to 3 Atm.
  3. If a spray can is used for work, the procedure is simplified and you can immediately paint the part.
  4. When you need to paint the car completely, work starts from the roof, gradually moving to the lower details.
  5. In this case, the spray gun nozzle is kept at a distance of up to 25 cm from the working surface.
  6. Sometimes, after painting the car, you can notice stains and other defects. Smooth movements, optimally selected pressure and paint density allow to exclude them.
  7. So, 2-3 layers are performed with small 15-minute breaks for drying. For each subsequent layer, the pigment becomes more liquid.

To paint qualitatively, you can not rush. With each subsequent layer, the color will be brighter, richer. After painting the body, you need to leave it to dry completely. This usually takes no more than 36 hours.

The step-by-step guide also provides tips for doing the procedure yourself:

  • you can only work in a respirator, additionally providing ventilation;
  • so that, after painting the car, not to detect traces of dust on the coating, the compressor is installed outside the paint shop;
  • in working area do not smoke, as flammable substances are used.

By following the step-by-step guide, it's easy to paint your car for a high-quality, attractive finish.

Is it worth paying for something you can do yourself? This almost philosophical question often arises before home craftsmen. Take, for example, painting a car. This pleasure is not cheap at all. However, many for some reason believe that it is impossible to cope with this task on their own.

We dare to dispel this myth and tell you how to paint a car with your own hands. The step-by-step guide below will allow you to carry out this process yourself, bypassing all possible pitfalls. Of course, this is a labor-intensive, long enough task, but not so difficult.

What is required for work

Professional body painting is carried out in closed boxes. In our case, a spacious garage is suitable for this purpose. It must meet the following requirements:

  1. The working area around the entire perimeter of the car is at least two meters.
  2. Free flow of fresh air.
  3. It is possible to provide good lighting, natural is best.

The garage is pre-tidy, removing dust, cobwebs and other debris so that nothing sticks to the new paintwork. Before painting, the floor is moistened with water from a spray bottle. In case of insufficient illumination, spotlights with a power of 500 or 1000 kW are installed.

Painting a car consists of several successive stages:

  • Body preparation (straightening, removal of the old paintwork coating, dismantling);
  • Leveling the surface with putty;
  • Sanding;
  • Primer;
  • Application of a new paintwork;
  • Grinding and polishing.

Painting work can only be carried out on a clean body, so the first thing to do before painting a car is to visit the nearest car wash.

As you can see, the main process is preceded by several preparatory stages. On how carefully all the work will be done, aesthetic indicators and specifications finished cover. Simply put, you will have to try your best to get a car that shines with brand new paint that will not fall off in pieces in the near future.

During painting work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Compressor;
  • Airbrush;
  • A set of keys and screwdrivers for dismantling attachments;
  • spatulas;
  • Sander;
  • Sandpaper;
  • Masking tape, rags;
  • White Spirit;
  • Putty, primer;
  • Autoenamel.

Body preparation for painting

If you plan to completely update the color of the car with your own hands, before starting work, you need to identify all coating defects that need to be fixed. If there are dents on the body, first of all, they are straightened. To do this, from the inside, hit the metal several times with a rubber hammer, straightening the bend.

Chips, dents, cracks, scratches on the body are circled with chalk so as not to miss anything, and they begin to process them. Stripping before painting is carried out close to the boundaries of damage, making sure that the transitions are smooth, imperceptible. You can recognize irregularities and roughness by running your palm over the surface.

Clean up to bare metal. In small areas, the paint layer is removed with a flat screwdriver, a narrow spatula.

If you want to treat a large area with your own hands, use an aqueous 30% solution of caustic soda, which is applied for 10-12 hours.

After that, the paint is removed with a metal scraper and washed with water. If this seems too long to you, to speed up the process, you can prepare a composition of xylene, paraffin and acetone. It softens old paint pretty quickly.

Paraffin and xylene are taken in the ratio of 10 g per 45 ml, heated in a water bath, cooled to 50 degrees and slowly, with thorough stirring, 45 ml of acetone is introduced.

Dismantling and protection

Before starting surface preparation, everything that cannot be painted is removed from the car:

  • headlights;
  • Turn indicators;
  • Bumpers;
  • Radiator grille;
  • wipers;
  • Door handles;
  • Number plates;
  • Antenna.

shock protection in wheel arches, if you have it installed, you must also remove it. If do-it-yourself dismantling is not included in your plans, you can cover all the parts with a paste of glycerin (30%), chalk (40%), dextrin (20%) and water (10%). The mixture dries quickly and prevents paint from getting in. But it is not the best way, although the fastest.

Pieces of parchment paper, using masking tape, close all the windows in the car, also capturing rubber seals, the wheels are wrapped in large pieces of plastic wrap. After all the parts that are not to be painted are closed, you can proceed to the next step.

Work with putty

Leveling with putty is the next step in preparing the car body for painting. To do this, you need to mix two components, the putty itself and the hardener. This is done as follows: two tablespoons of putty (without top), combined with a hardener from a tube, squeezing out 3-4 cm, and mix thoroughly for 30 seconds. It is better not to use containers for this purpose. A piece of plywood, a wide metal scraper, or a plastic cutting board will do.

Watch the video - putty, glare:

The putty is applied to the previously degreased surface of the car, with a layer of no more than 0.3 mm, with short movements. You will have to work quickly, because, after the start of the reaction of the two components, the mass hardens in five minutes.

As soon as lumps appear in the mixture, the putty becomes unusable.

Complete hardening occurs in 30-40 minutes at an air temperature of about +20 * C. If it is necessary to repeatedly apply putty, each layer is dried before applying the next. Next, the surface is cleaned alternately with sandpaper No. 80, 120 and 180 in such a way that they do not stand out for “patches”. The treatment is finished by machine grinding, using No. 180 and 280. Dust is removed from the body and wiped again with white spirit.

Clean the putty "dry", wetting with water changes its properties not for the better. This method is often recommended solely to avoid dusting the room and unnecessary cleaning.

Primer application

Applying a layer of primer improves the adhesion of the paint to the surface, thereby reducing its consumption and increasing the strength of the coating. In addition, the composition provides additional protection of the body against corrosion. It is better to apply the primer from a spray bottle, after diluting it with a solvent and filtering it.

In your work, use products from the same manufacturer, since different companies often produce primers and putties from components that are “not friendly” to each other, and this leads to their rejection. After drying, the coating may crack or peel off.

Car body painting

The choice of autoenamel is a responsible process, because it largely depends final result. Today, store shelves are full of all kinds of products, but not everyone is suitable for painting a car with their own hands. Since the work is carried out in a normal room, there is no possibility of thermal drying of the coating.

This means that the acquired paint should dry relatively quickly in natural conditions. These indicators correspond to nitro paint and acrylic enamel. The first is used if you need to paint only a separate part of the car (wing, hood, door). Nitro enamel dries in just 30 minutes, this is a definite plus.

But if you want to cover the entire body with it, you will have to sweat a lot, peeling off the old paint to the very foundation. After all, nitro enamel is incompatible with any modern paint and varnish coating; its use in production was stopped in the last century.

If you are going to update only one part: the hood or bumper, it is important that the paint shade matches the old finish perfectly. Coloring is one of the most delicate processes when painting a car, and one cannot do without the participation of a professional. To accurately "get into the color", you will have to experiment on several samples.

The final shade depends on many factors: spray rate, air pressure, distance at which the gun is located, brand of thinner used, paint viscosity. The color acquires the required depth when stained in 2-3 layers.

In order not to wait for drying, compare the sample with a well-polished old coating, after wetting the latter with water, so that the effect of fresh painting is complete.

Painting work begins with the preparation of car enamel, which must be diluted with a solvent to the desired consistency. The correct dilution can be determined visually. Dip any metal rod into the paint. If the drip rate is 3-4 drops per second, the density is quite suitable for using paint in a spray gun.

Filter the resulting paint through a fine sieve (ordinary women's tights with a density of 15 den are also suitable). The enamel is poured into the tank of the spray gun with a nozzle of 1.4, the pressure is set to about 3 atmospheres. Car painting is carried out from top to bottom, with uniform, smooth movements. The second layer is applied after 20 minutes, and the paint is diluted so that its viscosity is less than the first time.

As a rule, any paint is additionally diluted with a solvent. Carefully read the manufacturer's instructions and use only recommended brands.

Paint polishing

It is difficult to achieve absolute cleanliness in an ordinary garage, so minor defects are eliminated by sanding the body after the coating has completely dried. In this way, you can eliminate:

  • Dust particles, dirt, small insects stuck to the drying paint;
  • The effect of an orange peel, formed due to insufficient air pressure during the supply or improper dilution of the composition;
  • Lack of shine, which appears a couple of days after staining. The reason is high humidity or too high pressure when applying the coating.

For the final polishing of a painted car, polishing paste No. 290 is used, which is a mixture of abrasive materials. It is applied to a soft flannel or a piece of zigey and rubbed in a circular motion with light pressure.

Polishing water is used to add shine to the lacquer coating. It is an abrasive paste mixed with an emulsion. The liquid is applied by hand, using a piece of flannel. Polishing water eliminates the stains left from the abrasive composition, grease marks.

  1. The room in which painting work is carried out must be well ventilated.
  2. The compressor pumping air is located outside.
  3. Protect your airways with a respirator, goggles for your eyes, and gloves for your hands.
  4. Do not use solvents or gasoline to degrease the surface, only white spirit is suitable for this purpose.
  5. Dispose of used rags immediately, rags left in the garage soaked in a flammable compound can cause a fire.
  6. If possible, it is better to heat the diluted enamel to 50 ° C. hot water, this will reduce the consumption of solvent and the paint itself.
  7. The number of layers of paint depends solely on the desire of the owner, although experience suggests that it is better to stop at three, this is quite enough to ensure a spectacular appearance car.
  8. The paint and varnish covering completely dries up only in 24-36 hours. During this time, motes and midges stick to fresh paint. Carefully remove them with tweezers.

Now you know how to paint a car yourself. Agree, there is nothing impossible here. It just takes a little free time quality materials and your enthusiasm.

Preparing a car for painting is a very complex process, consisting of several stages and sometimes requiring considerable expenses, but nevertheless, this procedure can be done by hand. The amount of work to be done is determined by the current condition of the vehicle.

How to start preparing for painting

To begin with, the car is washed in order to more accurately assess the shortcomings that need to be addressed. There can be several types of work - tapping, leveling, puttying, grinding, priming the surface before painting. If there are dents or bulges on the surface of the car body, you first need to align them - by tapping or pulling.

If the deformation is strong enough and the above methods are unlikely to help, it is more rational to replace the damaged component with a new one and thereby save time.

Body sanding before painting

The next stage is body polishing, during which traces of corrosion and paintwork are removed. At this stage, a coarse abrasive material is used, which can leave small scratches. The best choice- a special grinder that will easily remove a layer of paint and rust.

Traces of corrosion are removed before the appearance of metal, after which the affected area is degreased and treated with a rust converter to remove the smallest foci. Then the areas are washed again and degreased. In more difficult cases, when corrosion is penetrating, a patch may be necessary.

Before installing it, it is necessary to cut the edges of the hole with a grinder or file, removing areas damaged by rust. If the amount of work is large, you can simply cut out the damaged area with a grinder.

Then a workpiece of the required size is cut out of the metal, which is first "tacked" at several points, after which it is welded with a continuous seam (overlap); the seams themselves should then be cleaned. Having finished all the manipulations, the body is blown and wiped with a degreaser.

The puttying process involves smoothing out all the uneven surfaces of the body. Directly in front of him, with the help of coarse-grained sandpaper, all cracks and sharp protrusions are cleaned. Puttying takes place in several stages - first of all, a rough putty is applied, then - finishing and finishing putty.

First, the material is prepared, then applied to the surface with a thin stainless steel or plastic spatula. If you need to repair the unevenness in an extended area, you should use facade spatulas. Before directly applying the putty, epoxy primer is applied to the work area with a spray gun.

After it dries, putty is applied - this must be done quickly until it has hardened. Each layer is subject to grinding - with a grinding machine or by hand, but the last layer is only manually leveled. When processing it with a typewriter, it is not always possible to feel the moment when you should stop, as a result, the work will have to be done again, but the slightest irregularities are felt with your fingers.

Primer of the surface to be painted

After puttying, the surface is primed - the primer fills microscopic cracks and scratches, and is also an adhesive substrate for enamel. The primary layer is applied thinly, it covers all areas that have been sanded to bare metal. The puttied surfaces and the layer of primary soil are covered with secondary primer. The substance is applied in two or three layers, polished with an abrasive with a grain size of 320, then - 500. The surface is degreased again.

Before painting, the car body is blown again, and the surfaces are covered with plastic wrap before painting. This is done in order to protect the surface from overspray - suspended particles of paint that hang in the air when it is sprayed. Paint the body with a spray gun that is adjustable according to the shape of the spot.

The number of layers is determined by the color of the paint and its characteristics. If you can still paint, for example, the hood yourself, then it is better to completely entrust the painting of the body to specialists. After drying, the body is varnished, and then polished. Polishing not only protects the fresh coating, but also gives it an extra shine.

Preparing a car for painting is not an easy process and, most importantly, it requires care and accuracy: a mistake even at one stage can affect the final result.

Having learned the cost of painting a car in a specialized service, car owners make decisions in favor of independently carrying out this procedure. However, many of them do not know how to paint the car themselves, so we will try to understand this topic as much as possible within the framework of a short article.

In general, painting a car with your own hands can be done by absolutely every car owner, and some craftsmen for painting are limited even to an ordinary vacuum cleaner. However, one must understand that with its help a complete repainting of the car will not succeed, therefore it is best to get a special compressor. Our website contains an article on which compressor to choose for painting a car and what requirements it must meet, as well as several options on how to make a compressor yourself.

Just in case, it is recommended to additionally purchase two spray caps for the compressor, supplemented by several spare tubes with different nozzle diameters. It will also be useful to have rubber plugs and O-rings.

In their assortment, service stations have many different equipment, with the help of which professional painting is carried out. We list only what is needed for a quick and efficient paint application in the garage. Materials and equipment for painting a car can be purchased at specialized stores. The color is selected using a computer, but this can also be done “by eye”.

What equipment is needed for body painting:

  • compressor, approximate cost from 5000 rubles;
  • airbrush (spray gun), from 1500 rubles;
  • painting mask, from 1000 rubles;
  • grinding machine, from 2000 rubles.

Materials for car painting:

  • abrasive materials (sandpaper, discs for a grinding machine);
  • paint, varnish;
  • putty (universal, finishing and finishing putty);
  • primers (acrylic, anti-silicone for surface degreasing, developing powder);
  • pastes (polishing, matting and protective pastes);
  • masking tape;
  • oilcloth;
  • paper napkins.

Approximate costs for the purchase of new equipment and materials - from 10,000 rubles. You can save money by purchasing used equipment, but it is worth considering that the quality of painting depends on it. It may be more profitable to use the services of a service station if you are going to paint the car once. Moreover, such services are used specialized equipment and guarantee high quality painting. With a small budget, you can do without a grinder, but then all the work on preparing the body for painting and subsequent polishing will have to be done manually! All other elements are required.

Another popular way to save money is to make your own airbrush and compressor. One example of a quick implementation of a homemade paint system:

Where to paint a car?

Many beginners have such a question if they do not have a garage where they could drive a car.
Is it possible to paint a car on the street?
Our answer: yes! The main thing is that there should be no precipitation, wind and good visibility. (Otherwise, a "beach painting" defect may appear - when there is dust and sand in the paint). Best time days for such work - early in the morning, as soon as the dew has disappeared: firstly, the whole day is ahead, the paint will have time to set before the night cold snap, and secondly, at this time there is usually neither wind nor midges. The advantage of outdoor painting is that there is no need to prepare the room for the procedure and, as a rule, there is no need to clean it afterwards.

Preparing the garage for car painting

Have you decided and you have the opportunity to paint in the garage? The main problem in this case is the presence of dust in the room, which can subsequently get on the car. Therefore, the preparation steps are as follows:

  1. we do general cleaning, sweep out large debris, sweep the walls;
  2. we moisten the walls, floor and ceiling, our compressor with a special gun or just a bottle of water with a spray will help us with this;
  3. do not forget to moisten / remove dust from hidden cavities;
  4. for work, we put on clean, dust-free clothes, if necessary, pre-blow it.

Preparation before painting

To begin with, we need a thorough preparation of the car for painting, or rather its surface. It requires a cleaning procedure to remove rust and dirt. Rough sandpaper works great here. The main thing is not to overdo it in those places where the primer, together with the old paint, is held very tightly.

You can limit yourself to a 30% solution of caustic soda. 10-12 hours after application, the paint is washed off with hot water.

Etching is also carried out using home-made or purchased pastes. We recommend kneading 0.5 potato flour per 0.5 l of cold water and adding a solution of 2 l of water and 2 kg of caustic soda to the resulting mixture. Next, the mixture must be continuously stirred and gradually pour another 5 liters of boiling water into it. The prepared paste is applied to the surface area, after which you need to wait about an hour for it to work. Then the paint is removed with putty and a stream of cool water.

Do-it-yourself car body painting

So, we figured out how to prepare the car for painting. Now let's move on to the next very important step. The paint should be prepared immediately before the car is painted. It is diluted with solvent No. 647 (No. 646) directly in the jar. Before using the paint, it is filtered through gauze or a fine sieve.

It will also be useful to heat the resulting enamel to 50 degrees. This will allow you to paint 2-3 layers, which 2 times will reduce the cost of the solvent. The viscosity of the paint must be chosen very carefully, and the last layers are laid with a more liquid solution. The time for natural drying of nitro enamel depends on temperature conditions, but on average it is 15 minutes.

When painting your car yourself, it's helpful to sand down every layer of putty, paint, and primer. Treated areas require abundant wetting and occasional rinsing with water. Grinding is carried out only with waterproof skins. Among other things, you can use grinding paste. Minor scratches on the surface are very easy to remove. It is enough to apply solvent No. 648 or the same No. 647 with a spray gun.

The painted surface needs polishing, which is carried out with rotational movements. Basic polishing is done using polishing paste No. 290 (fine abrasive), and finish the surface with polishing water. A flannel rag or zigzag skin is useful here. Read more about do-it-yourself car polishing.
