Actually, when I first saw the trike from KBMTS “Irbit Blues” I really liked it because the design is very simple and the construction budget will be small. The thought “we need to build” stuck in my head, but then there was neither the time nor the opportunity, and maybe I wouldn’t even have the intelligence to master it all (I was still in school). But time passes, this is already the 5th year of teaching. Institute, you need to write a diploma. A classmate had a topic about something related to club activities and it would be desirable to make applications (my topic, unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, was done without applications at all), he was offered to assemble a uni-moto, but I received a proposal for a trike. The Ural still stood idle for 3 years, and yet another look at the blues did not give me peace. Since the deadlines were tight and the budget was small, let’s just say this type was just for us. The solution was - build! but not the same, but simpler.

Some characteristics:

Brakes: rear - hydraulic (the role of the GTZ is played by the M-412 clutch cylinder), front - none

- no, it doesn’t shake, the pressure in the rear wheels is 1 atm.

- acceleration is somewhere between with and without a stroller
and also many people said, “Why won’t there be anything else from here?” and the answer “no, it won’t” apparently did not shock them, then the phrase “but how can it be, we still need something” was heard.

Probably everyone, at least once in their life, has seen huge three-wheeled motorcycles on which no less huge bearded men in leather vests and iron helmets plow the roads. And more than once we looked at photographs from motorcycle shows or exhibitions in which steel horses flaunted under the flags of their motorcycle clubs. These vehicles are called tricycles or trikes due to the presence of three wheels instead of two.

These motorcycles are specially designed for long and comfortable trips and have amazing spaciousness and power. The only drawback of these models is that they are rarely found on sale. And if there are any (especially if they are the brainchild of famous brands), then their cost will be very high. What should you do if you want to own such a bike, but... big money and there are no opportunities to purchase? There is only one answer - create it yourself.

How to make a tricycle

To create a homemade trike we will use the other two vehicles- a ZAZ-968 car and a heavy Ural motorcycle. The result should be a very powerful and fairly reliable tricycle on which you can conquer hundreds of kilometers.

General design drawings

Our tricycle will be a single design from ZAZ-968 and Ural. But in order to assemble one, you need to have a drawing, thanks to which you can clearly see the location of all the parts and components.

Design features of the tricycle:

  • special gussets were used to strengthen all joints;
  • the upper beam is a support for rear shock absorbers, therefore, glasses are welded to it, which are the same in design as car glasses;
  • frames are welded to the gussets and slopes on the central beam, which are necessary for the passenger to have footrests and at the same time act as a support for the suspension bump stops;
  • the lower cross member is attached to the frame using brackets and struts, acting as the basis for the pedal units;
  • The strut on the cross frame mount is necessary to support the entire gear shift mechanism.

The layout features of the tricycle differ significantly from the standard motorcycle. The main difference is that power unit is located behind and the balance is shifted back, which gives an extra reason for adrenaline - when sharp acceleration the motorcycle rears up.

The engine, like the gearbox, was removed from the ZAZ-968 car and no significant modifications were made to it. The only things added to the overall design of the rear of the trike are mufflers, an oil cooler from the car and an air filter. Everything else remains entirely the same as on the ZAZ-968. The engine mount remains the same, the gear shift lever is on the left (due to the fact that the driver's right hand is located on the throttle control lever). The gearbox mechanism rod is connected to the gearbox through a conventional hinge, which are installed on domestic cars.

The front suspension fork operates on the same principle as on the Ural. A linkage design is used, and the front wheel axle is located between the wishbones. In general, little needs to be changed - it is only necessary to lengthen the borrowed Ural front fork.

Having a diagram and knowing the individual nuances of the process itself, we begin step by step process assembling a homemade tricycle.


The end result is a trike, technical specifications And appearance which is in no way inferior to the tricycles that we have seen before.

Before starting work, it is necessary to think through the design of the future tricycle and the location of all elements. Ideally, make a drawing of the future vehicle.

Important design points:

  • All joints must be reinforced.

  • Frames are welded to the central beam, which serve as footrests for passengers and also support the suspension bump stops.

The main difference between a tricycle and a motorcycle is that the engine is located at the rear and therefore the center of gravity of the vehicle is shifted back. Location of tricycle parts

As we have already said, the engine of a Ural tricycle is not located on the main axis, like in motorcycles. It is placed between the rear wheels because of this, when accelerating quickly, the tricycle easily rears up. But this is a much safer event than on a motorcycle and adds adrenaline and entertainment to the trip.

Engine

As a motor, you can use a native motor from the Urals or take a car engine. The main parameter of choice is its capacity between rear wheels. Be sure to securely fasten it in at least three places. Most often, if the power unit is in good condition, then you don’t even need to do anything with it. And if the engine is old, then you can replace the radiator or some other elements.

Depending on the engine you choose, you will have to change and exhaust system, installing one muffler for each cylinder.

When converting a motorcycle from the Urals into a tricycle with your own hands, the gearbox is usually installed on the left side, because you usually need to hold the steering wheel firmly with your right hand. You'll have to think a little about how to connect it to the engine, because now the gearbox will be located at a much greater distance from it.

Suspension

The standard motorcycle suspension will have to be redone due to the fact that the load on the wheels in the Ural moto tricycle is distributed differently.

This is done using two consoles and two large springs (aircraft springs are ideal, but car springs will also work). The consoles are connected by levers through which the front axle passes.

Powerful springs are needed because when moving, a huge load is placed on the front wheel and suspension. The remaining springs can be left as standard motorcycle springs.

Battery

A separate frame is usually welded under the battery, which is attached between the engine and the driver’s seat. All the main details are thus arranged in one place. And if you attach panniers to the tricycle, they will completely hide all the important elements.

Coloring

Since a do-it-yourself tricycle based on the Urals is assembled from different parts, as well as other motorcycles and cars, all the parts turn out different and therefore need painting. After painting, it is advisable to apply a clear varnish and polish. And metal elements are chrome plated.

When creating a cargo tricycle with your own hands from the Urals and parts of a VAZ-2101 car, the easiest thing will be to install a regular bridge and make a car suspension with shock absorbers from the Urals.

The bridge from the VAZ-2101 is turned over, after welding the differential. This is reflected in the handling – the steering wheel is quite difficult to turn, however, the trike’s cross-country ability increases.

The driveshaft is shortened and welded to the fork on the final drive and connected to the axle through a rubber coupling. It is better to take the original Uralov clutch, in this case the transmission will be softer.

To avoid bending the cardan drive, you can move the engine to the left by 7-9 cm, or move the axle to the right or increase the wheelbase.

It is better to leave the engine as a whole unchanged, but instead of two carburetors, make one Chinese one. And for forced cooling, use an air filter from Izh.

Additionally, to cool the engine when operating in difficult conditions, you can install two fans and run them separately if necessary.

How to make a tricycle from a Ural and ZAZ-968 motorcycle

The front fork works like in the Urals, a lever system is used and the front axle is located between the transverse arms.

When creating a trike from the Urals and a ZAZ-968 car, the rear part remains practically unchanged, like a car. Only a muffler, oil cooler and air filter are added there. The gearbox and engine are also used from ZAZ. The engine is mounted as before, and the gearbox is placed on the left.

In general, there is not much to change.

DIY assembly steps

  • At the very beginning it is removed from the car rear axle.
  • A beam is attached to the cut.
  • Mufflers, an air filter, an oil cooler and pipes are installed on the rear wheel axle. If you use engines from the 90s, then all these elements will already be installed.
  • A frame is being made that will be the basis of the tricycle, so it is necessary to make it strong and reliable.
  • An extended front fork is manufactured by welding with shock absorbers attached to it. Lengthening occurs by replacing the fork rods with longer ones or by welding more tubes to the Ural fork.
  • Welds the frame and rear axle of the car, forming a solid structure.
  • The fork is connected to the frame by welding, just like with rear axle ZAZA.
  • After this, the seats, gas tank and other elements are attached.
  • Finally, the new tricycle is painted and chromed.

Ural Hercules - factory Ural tricycle

The design of this homemade swamp vehicle is so simple that almost any car enthusiast can repeat it in his own garage. The basis of the swamp vehicle is the IZH Planet 3 motorcycle. IZH Planet motorcycles often become donors in all-terrain homemade vehicles, this is primarily due to the endurance and unpretentiousness of their engines.

The bridge was taken from a Muscovite and modernized. We cut out the bearing mounts from the doll with a grinder, then welded the yoke to the bridge stocking (if it is not welded, the stocking will warp when you cut it in half), then cut the stocking itself in order to secure the sprocket. Swamp buggy wheels


The KF-97 cameras are used from the agricultural trailer of the T-150 tractor. Tire for this tube wheel is the same chamber, only cut to a smaller diameter. First, the “tire” is put on, then it is tightened with belts. The transverse harnesses turned out to be 1.02 m long, and the longitudinal strip was 3.5 m long. The width of the longitudinal strip is 30 centimeters. The transverse belts with the longitudinal strip are connected using bolts.

Swamp vehicle disks


The basis was taken from cornfield disks, cut in half using a small grinder and extended by 30 centimeters with steel plates welded between the disk halves (6 plates in total). The disc is covered with a chamber from a VAZ car, cut to a larger diameter. Since the disks were used from a Niva, and the axle from a Muscovite, the rear disks at the mounting points had to be trimmed.

Frame, brakes and transmission






The motorcycle frame has been lengthened and strengthened. To pendulum fork it didn’t “go”, it was welded. The chain and sprockets are borrowed from the combine. Their ratio is 2 to 1. A small star with 25 teeth, it is attached to the drum using eight hardened 10-point bolts. A large star with 50 teeth. Brake system The swamp vehicle is no different from any other, so the brakes are left unchanged. But the drum was modernized to accommodate sprocket mounts.

Fork




The length of the fork stays of this swamp vehicle is 800mm, while its width is approximately 700mm. The front wheel axle was used from a donor - an IZh motorcycle. On one side, an extension pipe 500 mm long is welded to the axle. This pipe is inserted into a modernized Izhevsk drum screwed to the wheel. On the other hand, the axle is screwed into the same mount as on the fork leg. The mount was cut off from the shock absorber and welded to the feather (it is not visible in the photo since it is inserted into the pipe and welded).

The fork is attached to the steering wheel of the swamp vehicle quite simply. 2 pipes are inserted into the shock absorber mount.


Engine for all-terrain vehicle

The engine is from the IZH-Planet 3 motorcycle with forced air cooling from the SZD motorized stroller (popularly “Invalidka”). The crankshaft is the original crankshaft - the planetovsky one, and not the SZDshny one, since the seat for the generator in the SZDshny one does not fit (it is larger), and the swamp vehicle has an Izh 6v ignition coil.
