How to restore wiper blades: we consider different methods. Windshield wiper mechanism repair

With your own hands and at least for a while. We use proven products and extend the life of the wiper blades.

Lubricate with gasoline

The effect is short-term, suitable for “killed” brushes, which are no longer a pity, but there is no time to buy new ones. Graphite coating will not survive a collision with gasoline, but it is responsible for the quality of sliding on glass and the absence of creaking. So soaking the wipers in gasoline is only a last resort. Again, after the evaporation of gasoline from rubber, the condition of the brush will be even worse.

Note! After wetting with gasoline, the brushes should be washed with warm soapy water.

Lubricate with silicone

Sliding will become too cool, like world figure skating champions! Accordingly, the quality of glass cleaning, on the contrary, will sharply decrease.

Lubricate with white spirit

Good liquid, and the effects of it are interesting. It is only necessary to work with this solvent carefully, wearing personal protective equipment and in a well-ventilated area. Again, the effect will be short-term, and old brushes will not turn into new White Spirit.

Lubricate with glycerin

Ordinary pharmacy glycerin "knows how" to soften hardened rubber. Before applying, the brush must be cleaned of dust and dirt, and then washed and dried. After applying glycerin to the surface, it is allowed to soak.

Wash in hot water

Water with a temperature of 50-60 degrees will remove the surface layer of fat from the rubber. However, it will take half an hour to keep the brushes in the water, and the effect will not last very long.

Restore brush shape

If the working surface of the brush is worn out, then you can extend the life of the accessory and restore the cleaning properties with sandpaper. Take a plate of non-bending material (strong plywood, for example), glue fine-grained sandpaper to it and carefully process the rubber edge of the brush so that it becomes rectangular. The method has disadvantages: if the surface is treated unevenly, wide stripes will remain on the glass.

The secret way from the mysterious grandfather

There is a post on the Drive2 auto resource about a special old-fashioned method for restoring wiper blades. You will need "White spirit" (gasoline solvent) and a few cigarettes. Tobacco must be removed from cigarettes and shaken out on a rag soaked in solvent. After that, wipe with a brush rag. The author of the method assures of an unusually powerful effect from tobacco, but it is better to check his words again on old brushes.

Hello. Here is another update of my "Crazy Hands" section. And as usual, we will do everything with our own hands and in the field.

I am sure that many motorists have an idea of what wiper blades are (in common people - wipers), and the fact that they have plastic plugs on their sides that fix the rubber that cleans windshield from water, snow and mud. It is this plug that we will be repairing today, or rather, fixing the rubber band, because. the plug got lost somewhere along the way...

I immediately apologize for the quality, I had to take pictures with a tablet with a lousy camera.

The situation was like this, we went out of town, lost a plug along the way, there was not a single auto shop in the area. There was nothing to do, I had to repair it from improvised means so that the windshield would not be scratched in the rain.

This is what the stub looks like:

And this is what we will repair:

As can be seen from the photo, there is no plug at the end of the wiper blade (wiper), which is why the rubber band constantly runs away, and the "ribs" that should hold it apart and scratch, which can lead to unpleasant scratches.

Structure frameless brush windshield wiper is extremely simple, and therefore its repair does not take much time. For repairs we need:
1. Stationery or construction knife;
2. ;
3. Self-confidence.

To begin with, I determined the place where the collar will pass in order to fix the elastic band tightly with it. If you look closely at the photo, you can see that the "ribs" have symmetrical recesses. That's it, neither their level, and we will make a through hole in the rubber band of the janitor for a tight fixation of the clamp.

Making a hole is extremely inconvenient, because. rubber band is tight. Therefore, we do everything very carefully, and it is desirable that the hole is not very wide. The wider it is, the easier it is to tear the elastic band by passing a tie through it.

Then, you need to thread the tie through the hole. Pay attention to the fact that the coupler lock on the installed wiper is closer to the hood than to the glass. Otherwise, it may interfere with the snug fit of the wiper to the windshield and scratch it.

Pay Special attention how the screed goes. The rubber band of the wiper blade has "gills" as it were. It was precisely between them that I made a hole in order to preserve the cleaning properties of the janitor. Otherwise, the fit of the rubber to the glass would not be tight, and the repair of the wiper blade would only give a visual effect.

Prodeli? Amazing. Now we carefully begin to tighten, not forgetting to correct the tie lock. It is necessary to correct very delicately so as not to irritate the hole in the elastic band.

After tightening, we saw off the dangling end with the same clerical knife.

Well, actually, here's how I ended up with it. In my opinion, it turned out not bad. Yes, and by car, after installation it is not noticeable, unless of course you know and look closely ...

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of what the repaired wiper blade looks like on the car ... But I will say one thing that we drove back in the rain normally. The brush retained its original function and did not scratch the glass.

I will not say that the repair of the wiper blade, which I described in this post, is ideal, but, as I wrote above, the repair was carried out in the field using improvised means. What I found, I screwed)))

Time spent on the strength of 10 minutes. I strongly recommend that you still use this method only in emergency situations and replace the wiper blade as soon as possible. Fortunately, the prices for them are not very high, and you can spend money only on one, and not on a set. Don't save money on your own safety.

That's probably all. All questions, additions and thoughts are left in the comments.

P.S. Do not forget to subscribe to my updates and, tell your friends about the project, leave detailed comments on the topic, retweet, like, click on "I like" and ... Well, you yourself know everything)))

Thank you for your attention.

Noticing that the wipers do not clean the windshield as they should, many motorists decide to change the wipers immediately. In fact, there are several ways to fix the cleaning elements, thereby giving the windshield wipers a second life.

Reasons for replacing wipers

Causes of poor brush performance

Before proceeding with the repair of car wipers, you need to figure out what is the reason for their poor performance:

How to repair wiper blades

The method of repairing car wiper blades must be chosen, given the reason for their poor performance:

How to change wiper blades

If the rubber band cannot be restored, and the wiper frame is still in excellent condition, then change it. Dismantling this tape is quite simple:

  • first bend the tape holders with a screwdriver
  • use small pliers to spread the tabs of the latch so that the tape can be easily pulled out
  • as you took out the tape, pull out the elastic plates from it, if they are bent, then pay attention to which direction in order to correctly install the plates in the groove of the new tape.
  • a new tape must be threaded through the groove through the rocker clamps, if any of the retainer supports does not provide easy movement, or if the tape is too loose in it, then expand the legs or vice versa, tighten them
  • after you have tucked the tape into the legs of the rocker arms, then squeeze the latch with pliers and install the brush on the wiper.

By correctly identifying the cause of the poor performance of the brushes and properly repairing them, you will get rid of the need to change the wiper. So you save your money and ensure your safety. Through dirty windows, the driver does not see the whole road, which can lead to very sad consequences.

    Anton says:

When it was time to change the wipers, it was not possible to tighten the rubber, as it simply did not fit. There were suggestions to cut it. But the possibilities turned out to be unpredictable hot water. Not only is this tool that is in every home, it does not require any financial investment. Or the same gasoline, always at hand, even if you need to clean up the wipers on the road.

    Igor says:

Ever since his student years, the teacher advised jokingly soaking erasers in gasoline, so that they would better wipe the pencil on the drawing paper. So I tried it for the wipers. This turns out to be the best and most common method of extending the life of the wipers. Moreover, gasoline is such a tool that is always next to the driver.

    Oleg says:

Tell me, which wiper blades are better - framed or frameless?

    Valentine says:

Oleg, depending on what point of view to consider. From an aesthetic point of view, they are frameless, besides, they are better pressed against the glass, which means that they should be better cleaned of any dirt on the glass. In addition, it is almost impossible to find a replacement for a rubberized tape on them. And if you look at the replacement of frame wipers, then they are easy to use, even a girl can change a brush or tape. In addition, they are much cheaper than frameless ones and will last you longer.

    Fedor says:

When asked which wipers are best for a car, keep in mind that you choose them not for yourself, but for the car. Therefore, they need to be considered and compared from a functional point of view. It is clear that they all have disadvantages. But from an objective point of view, frame wipers are better.

    Mark says:

When it became a question of choosing wipers for a car, without the slightest hesitation, the choice fell on frameless ones. The main criterion was that they do not block the view on the road as much as frame ones. About the fact that they are expensive and difficult to find a replacement for them. Yes, they cost a lot, but it’s not a pity to give money for their versatility. You can find a replacement for absolutely any thing, and in skillful hands, it is possible to change both the brush and the rubberized part.

    Gregory says:

Previously, the question often arose about which wiper blades are better. Tip - try both types in your work. This way you will know all their work from start to finish. The solution came right away - only frameless ones, as they are universal for any season and weather conditions. In winter, there are problems with frame wipers, sometimes they just break. And frameless, thanks to frost-resistant rubber and special liquids, will be able to clean the windshield from ice.

Since wiper blades are often used incorrectly or in adverse conditions, their rapid wear is far from uncommon. But, if you drive on domestic roads in rain or snow with faulty wipers, this can cause a traffic accident.

If for some reason it is not possible to replace the defective parts with new ones in the near future, the motorist can try to restore the wipers on their own. To do this, it will be necessary to restore the supporting frame, as well as replace the spent rubber elements. Almost everyone can restore the wipers with their own hands - it will not take much time, and as a result, the wipers will be fully restored.

Step-by-step instruction:

1. First of all, it is necessary to release the lock girth. This is done so that you can remove the removable rubber band.

2. Thoroughly clean the surface of the wipers, and after cleaning, treat it well special composition. A multifunctional tool such as WD-40 lubricant or any other composition with similar functionality may well be suitable.

3. Using pliers, correct all the backlash in the hinges (if any, of course). If there are no pliers, it is quite possible to carefully use an ordinary hammer for these purposes. In no case should the hinges interfere with the free movement of the brush arms. If the rubber pads are in good condition, It's enough.

4. If the rubber components have served their time and require replacement, then you should not delay with this. Using the old rubber band as a template, measure the length of the new rubber piece. Just in case, be sure to leave a little for the stock: approximately 5-7 millimeters will be enough. In the future, the excess gum can be easily cut off. However, the “tail” of the gum should be cut only after the wiper has been fully assembled.

5. Together with the adapter, install a new rubber element in place. Fix the entire structure with ordinary adhesive tape. Next, install the gum into the bearing part of the brush from the side of the locking girth. Clamp the girth with pliers and carefully insert the rubber element to the end, fixing it in the remaining girths. Of course, in a car shop you can buy rubber elements directly with an adapter, however, in order to correct such an element, you will have to use special scissors for cutting metal. If the motorist prefers to use old adapters that are practically not subject to wear, such a problem will not arise.

The main function of the brushes in the washing machine, and why they cannot be repaired

Carbon brushes are the element that provides rotation commutator motor. They transmit tension between its parts. Without them, there is no "connection" between the fixed stator and the moving rotor. With poor contact between the brushes and the collector, the electric motor loses power, twitches or stops altogether.

During operation, the brushes rub against the motor manifold and eventually shorten so much that they lose contact with it. That is why they are classified as consumables, and worn out "stumps" are replaced with new brushes.

The procedure for carrying out work when replacing brushes by the master "RemBytTekh"

What we do when performing a service at a client's home:

1. Disassemble the washing machine

The engine, most often, is at the bottom slightly to the right, if you look at the car from the rear wall. To get to the engine, the master removes the back panel. In some washing machines, you must first remove the top cover.

Disassembly order:

  • We completely de-energize the machine by pulling the plug from the outlet.
  • Remove the back wall. We unscrew the fastening screws with a screwdriver (if the wall is additionally pressed by the top cover, first remove it).

We are filming drive belt, which is put on the pulleys of the drum and engine. To do this, turn the drum pulley and gently pull the belt towards you.

2. Remove the engine and check the brushes

In most models, the motor is “put on” on special holders and secured with screws or bolts. The sequence of our actions is as follows.

  • Disconnect the engine power supply. To do this, pull the connector out of the socket.
  • We unscrew the fasteners and take out the engine.

After removal, the master checks that the brushes are worn out and it really is time to change them. As a rule, this is not difficult to determine by visually looking at them. "RemBytTekh" employs experienced craftsmen who, according to appearance understand how critical the wear of the brushes is.

In some older models of washing machines, the brushes may be hidden behind the motor housing. In this case, the master checks them with a multimeter.

Note! Sometimes the design of the washing motor mount allows you to ring the brushes without removing the motor.

3. Change the brushes

The brushes are inserted into special holders. The contact part is in contact with the rotor collector, the wire part is connected to the stator. In very old electric motors of "age" machines, access to graphite brushes is closed by part of the motor. Therefore, it has to be partially disassembled. But these are rare and usually the order of replacement is as follows:

  • We disconnect the wires and carry out the dismantling of worn brushes. To do this, depending on the design, either snap off the pressure plate and pull out the brush, or unscrew the holder with the brush with a screwdriver, disassemble it, bite off the wire of the brush coal from the holder, and then remove the coal itself. During dismantling, be sure to remember where the bevel of the contact part of the brush was directed. This is necessary for the correct installation of the new part.
  • We look at the collector. If it is very dirty, wipe it from dust.
  • We install a new part in the reverse order of dismantling. If the design is such that during dismantling the wire of the carbon brush was cut off from the holder, then it will be necessary to solder new brushes to the brush holders. After installation, the master visually assesses how the electric brushes are placed: the end of the holder should protrude by about 10mm. The master also checks the correctness and tightness of the bevels of the brushes to the collector.
  • We connect the wires.
Note! In a design where it is necessary to solder a new brush to the holder when replacing, the master often saves time and installs already ready kit holder with a brush soldered into it.

4. We put the engine

Now we return the motor to the washing machine.

  • We put the electric motor on the mounting tabs and tighten the bolts or screws. We check the stability of the motor so that there are no movements and wobbles.
  • We put on the drive belt, first on the motor, then on the tank pulley. We check the tension, otherwise the belt will fly off when the engine starts.
  • We connect the power, insert the cable into the socket.

5. We collect the car

We put the back panel in place and fasten it. The top cover is put on last, if it was also removed. After assembly, we run the washer in test mode to check the operation of the engine with different loads.

Attention! Even with the correct installation of the brushes, they go through "lapping" with the collector during 2-3 washes after replacement. Therefore, the washing machine may make a little noise and spark a little at first.

The main signs when you need to change the brushes

The exact answer that it is time to change the brushes is given by the diagnostics of the machine. But calling the master for the sake of verification is not convenient for everyone. Based on the repair experience, RemBytTech service engineers have prepared a list of signs that may indicate the need to replace the electric brushes.

  • Problems with the rotation of the drum. The drum barely spins, and the machine cannot gain momentum on the spin cycle. Or the washing machine does not rotate the drum at all, immediately draining the water after typing. Or, it happens that the drum spins a little at the beginning of the wash, after which the machine stops washing and gives an error.
  • Unstable work engine. When fully loaded in the wash or during the spin cycle, the machine loses speed.
  • Noise and sparking brushes. It is noticeable by the smell of metal or burning insulation, and in the dark you can see the glow at the bottom of the washer, as from sparklers.

The symptoms described may end with program interruption and display of an error code. The code is displayed on the display (if any) or the indicators flash. Most often, the wear of the brushes is signaled by an error in the motor, tachometer or spin.

Causes of brush failure

Electric brushes “fail” due to marriage, physical wear (that is, abrasion) or wedging.

  • Marriage. This is a manufacturing flaw and is rare.
  • Wear of carbon brushes. The most common reason for replacement. The average service life of electric brushes is 5-7 years. If you rarely wash and do not overload the machine, then the contact elements can last 10-12 years. After that, the length of the brushes reaches a minimum of 1 cm, and they no longer touch the motor manifold.
  • wedging. Sometimes the wear of the brushes is not critical, but they lose contact with the commutator. This is due to the fact that they are wedged in the holder. The brushes are pressed against the motor manifold with the help of springs that squeeze them out of the brush holder. Coal dust enters the space between the brush and the holder, which is formed in large quantities as a result of the friction of the brush against the collector. She stops her extrusion from the holder. This problem is called “wedging of the brushes”.
Note! In the case of wedging, the wear of the brushes may not yet reach the minimum allowable value, and by moving the brush in the holder it is possible to restore its contact with the commutator. But, in most cases, a wedge occurs either when 3-5 mm are left to the critical length, or when the brush geometry is broken. In both cases, it is advisable to change the brushes for new ones. If this is not done, then the problem will recur in the very near future.

Replacing the brushes in a washing machine requires specialized knowledge and experience. Independent work often turns into additional difficulties that are difficult to deal with without professional training. The main difficulties are:

  • Motor disassembly old model . It is impossible to change the brushes in them without removing part of the structure. And when assembling the engine back, non-specialists often confuse the connection of wires. As a result, the motor burns out and you have to change it completely.
  • Correct installation brushes. The part must be placed with the correct side (cut to the collector) and check the distance. If the contact element is not fastened correctly, it will weakly touch the surface of the collector. As a result, the motor due to poor contact will not be able to work on full power and may even burn out. And the machine will make noise and spark for quite a long time. It is also dangerous and may cause a fire.
  • Soldering contacts. In some brands of washing machines, the brushes must be soldered to the holders. This requires knowledge of soldering technology.
  • Motor adjustment for belt tension. At repair work associated with the removal of the motor, during reinstallation, its position must be adjusted to ensure sufficient belt tension. Otherwise, the belt will jump off the pulley while the washing machine is running.

To avoid unnecessary problems with the washing machine when self replacement brushes - contact RemBytTech. Call the master by phone:

Wait for a specialist 24 hours after the call or on the selected day.
