The premiere meant a radically new approach of the Togliatti automobile plant to the future production of cars. It is already clear that a car that has the characteristics described above (suspension, engine, body geometry, etc.) would also be desirable in the 4x4 version. The all-wheel drive version was announced by the manufacturer for a long time, the start of production was scheduled for 2016. Judging by the description, the SUV was supposed to have similar technical characteristics and design, and Renault Duster was supposed to serve as the basis for it.

However, according to the latest data, the project is frozen. The release of the car with all-wheel drive is not expected. Therefore, it is not necessary to guess what kind of drive the novelty will have. Lada X Ray Cross will have front-wheel drive and the same dimensions, and the difference is only in the presence of basic roof rails and a plastic body kit.

The technical characteristics of the car have already brought it so close to SUVs that only all-wheel drive is missing from this segment.

A hallmark of the Xray, which should be carried over to the rest of Lada's future releases, is the X-shaped front end, designed by former Mercedes-Benz and Volvo designer Steve Mattin (a number of automotive experts believe it was borrowed from Mitsubishi). The front of the hatchback is decorated with the latest head optics with LED DRLs, larger than the headlights of Lada Vesta, and on the side there is a stamping made in the shape of the letter “X”. On the far from outstanding dimensions of the “stern”, the letters L A D A are not widely spaced from each other (the distance between the letters is clearly larger in Vesta) and taillights with a rather controversial design. As for the rims, they are 16-inch in the “base”, and 17-inch are offered for a surcharge. Dimensions are generally unimpressive, and the car, alas, does not create the impression of an urban crossover - for this it is small and narrow. Design

Adaptation to Russian conditions

Already after the first trip to the Xray, you are convinced that this is nothing but a small workhorse, which definitely outperforms the Sandero “co-platformer” in price and is not afraid of our dead roads, even despite the lack of all-wheel drive. Unfortunately, the appearance of an all-wheel drive transmission is not expected, since in order to introduce it into the B0 "cart" the manufacturer would have to completely redo the rear suspension, as in the case of the Duster, since the elastic beam, gearbox and driveshaft do not fit well, and this is fraught with high costs. for a car factory. The declared ground clearance is 195 mm, but in fact it is approximately 185 mm, which, in principle, is quite normal for operation in difficult Russian conditions. Also, one cannot but rejoice that the bottom of the car is even - no protruding muffler pipes are visible, the engine compartment is reliably protected by iron, and the thresholds are located at the optimal height, making it not so easy to damage the body on a summer dirt road or a snowy road.

Comfort

The doors of the car open quite wide, which ensures a comfortable fit into the cabin. The second row is a bit cramped, but the rear sofa itself is very comfortable. The front is freer, the first-row seats borrowed from Renault are distinguished by high-quality finishes, a shortish seat and the presence of a heating function. The driver's seat is for the most part well-organized, only the driver's door glass does not have automatic opening in any of the trim levels. The salon is completely trimmed with high-quality plastic and decorated in dark and light colors. The steering wheel is also made of plastic, and the front panel with stylish air duct deflectors is made using a seamless technology.


The Xray doors have more expensive handles than the Renault Sandero and continue the X theme on the inside, as do the seats. The new shift lever of the robotic gearbox pleases the eye with a chrome finish (for modifications with a five-speed “robot” AMT). The Xray dashboard has the same wells as the Sandero, and the graphics and fonts are VAZ. The multimedia complex with a touch screen and a rear video review does not glare and guarantees excellent image quality - at the level of Volkswagen and Nissan. It is noteworthy that the sound of this "multimedia" is an order of magnitude better than that of Vesta. In the initial configuration, a conventional air conditioner is provided, and in the top one, automatic climate control is more efficient than the Vesta air conditioning unit. In addition, the cabin has a cooled glove box, narrow cup holders, a eyeglass case and an Era-Glonass emergency alert button on the ceiling.

The base Xray is equipped with a 2DIN audio system with radio (FM/AM with RDS function), CD player, four speakers, AUX and USB input for connecting mobile devices, Bluetooth and Handsfree. But the top versions have at their disposal a multimedia complex with a seven-inch color touchscreen, six speakers and navigation. Thanks to this complex, you can view the image from the rear view camera, listen to your favorite music and talk on the phone without being distracted from driving. The range of hatchback engines includes VAZ gasoline "fours" with electronically controlled fuel injection. We are talking about a familiar 1.6-liter engine that produces 106 hp. and 148 Nm of peak torque, and a completely new 1.8-liter unit that develops 122 hp. and 170 Nm, calmly refers to the 92nd gasoline and in reality consumes 8-8.2 liters. fuel per 100 kilometers, while its passport consumption averages 6.8 l / 100 km. Both motors are combined with a five-speed manual transmission, but the 122-horsepower engine can be paired with a 5-speed AMT single-clutch robot that replaced the torque converter box. The most powerful modification with a robotic transmission accelerates to 100 km / h in 10.9 seconds, and its top speed is 186 km / h, which is a good indicator for a model in this class.

Ground clearance has never been a problem, even for the regular Xray. In the Cross version, it has grown to an impressive 215 mm. The figure is decent for many all-wheel drive vehicles and is comparable to the performance of models such as the related Renault Duster or Kaptur. The increase in ground clearance was the result of not only changes in the suspension, but also a different wheel dimension. Add to this unpainted plastic around the perimeter, and it becomes a good choice for off-road driving.

2. Appearance

If we talk about off-road body kit, then XRAY Cross is a vivid example of how "armor" can benefit the image. Cross really looks much more harmonious than the usual Xray: unpainted plastic unloaded the heavy image. 17-inch wheels also played a plus. True, on a broken road, as ours showed, shoes should still be with a higher profile. Roof rails also contribute to the attractive appearance, giving the car a utilitarian look.

3. New options and functions

Lada XRAY Cross boasts a number of new options. First of all, this concerns the heating of the steering wheel - on Ladakh, such a useful option in our country appeared for the first time. And the rim itself can be sheathed in leather. On the Cross, the front seat heating buttons have finally moved from the end of the seats to the center console. 4. Lada Ride Select

Of course, the “off-road” version of Xray, like Vesta, does not have all-wheel drive. And it is unlikely to be. But there is still some alternative to this modification. We fully managed to test the last mode in the Karakum sands. Of course, it will not replace all-wheel drive, but it will allow the car to move several tens of meters further than a regular XRAY.

5. Chassis

In addition to many updates in the cabin and the appearance of the Lada Ride Select system, the Xray Cross also underwent a chassis upgrade. The front suspension arms are similar. From it, and electric power steering. And, of course, disc brakes on all wheels. All this inevitably affected driving performance. XRAY Cross rides on a winding road much nicer and clearer than a regular Xray. Reactions to the steering wheel have become more accurate, the early demolition of the front axle has disappeared when overspeeding. The first minus is the price

At the price of the maximum configuration, XRAY Cross reached a new psychological mark of 900 thousand rubles. Description of development opportunities

As can be seen in the proposed photos, which were taken during the preliminary show of the X Ray and Vesta concepts back in 2014, this car has impressive overall dimensions. The length of the body is 4165 mm, its width is 1764 mm and its height is 1570 mm. These dimensions, as well as the wheelbase with a length of 2592 mm, will remain, according to the designers, the same for all Lada X Ray cars. Characteristics related to other indicators and parameters may differ significantly.

Regarding the modifications and changes to this model, the designers and the general director of the AvtoVAZ automobile concern announced that the X-Ray will be produced in three different drive versions. The body, according to the management of the concern, will remain unchanged (relative to the form in which the Lada XRay is now mass-produced) - however, the possibility of light restyling if necessary is not ruled out.

Currently, only the front-wheel drive version of this new car is ready for sale. The release of the all-wheel drive version of the Lada X Ray Cross in the form of a full-fledged SUV should take place in the second half of 2016 - and around the same time a car with a switchable 4x2 all-wheel drive will be released, combining all the advantages of the two described modifications.

Hatchback Lada X Ray

The designers of AvtoVAZ, even before the start of the development of the production model, stated that this car would not claim the title of urban crossover, even despite the huge external similarity. In all sources, thanks to this, this car is referred to exclusively as a hatchback (or SUV).

Many domestic motorists were looking forward to the new car Lada XRay hatchback - the characteristics and the almost complete elimination of all the errors of previous failed models played a role. The car is perfect for both city driving and use for traveling on broken gravel roads, thanks to the high (195 mm in running order) ground clearance and powerful suspension. The suspension, according to experts, turned out to be very dynamic and pleasant: the front one is made independent, according to the MacPherson system, and the rear one is a solid elastic beam with powerful springs.

Despite the fact that this model is not an SUV, the designers have done everything possible to make this car more stable on the track. The rear axle is 35 mm longer than the front axle, making the car much more dynamic and agile than expected from a car of similar dimensions.

Power units

The technical characteristics of the new Lada X-Ray largely depend on the power units used for its assembly. It is worth considering the possibilities offered by the designers and evaluating everything that can be placed under the hood of this model.

The simplest and cheapest power unit used to equip this car consists of a standard "VAZ" 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 106 horsepower and is complemented by a French five-speed manual shift transmission from Renault. Both the engine and the manual transmission have already been used in a number of previous developments (the engine was used with resounding success in the development of the Lada Vesta sedan, the gearbox was also used in the assembly of this model). A domestic-made mechanical transmission is not used due to its noisiness, which could not be "cured" after Lada Kalina went on sale.

A more advanced version of the powertrain combines the same powertrain with a 1.6-liter engine from Nissan, producing 110 horsepower. The difference is quite small, but this motor is objectively better than the domestic one, more productive and more durable.

The most powerful power unit proposed for the Lada XRay hatchback combines a 1.8-liter sixteen-valve engine with a capacity of 122 hp. with a five-speed robotic automatic transmission (AMT). The characteristics of the Lada X Ray machine will be significantly higher than those of previous configurations, due to the significantly greater engine power. However, fuel consumption will also increase significantly, which makes the best power unit offered by a double-edged sword.

Speed, acceleration and fuel consumption

Each of the proposed power units has its own capabilities. They are worth considering in more detail.

  • The power unit based on a 106-horsepower engine has good fuel consumption (7.6 liters per 100 kilometers), but rather weak acceleration (11.9 seconds from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour). The maximum speed of the model equipped with this engine is only 170 km / h - lower than that of the basic configuration of Vesta due to its greater mass.
  • The power unit based on a 110-horsepower engine accelerates much faster - from zero to hundreds, it can accelerate in just 10.3 seconds. The maximum speed is not much different from the previous unit - only 171 km / h, but fuel consumption is significantly lower and is only 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers.
  • The most powerful and productive unit based on a 122-horsepower engine is capable of speeds up to 183 km/h and is much more dynamic. However, automatic gear shifting significantly reduces the vehicle's ability to quickly accelerate from a standstill. With more power, this power unit allows you to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km / h in 10.9 seconds. Nevertheless, the machine allows you to reduce fuel consumption: you need only 7.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

This calculation allows us to say with confidence that the X Ray Optima equipment equipped exclusively with the first type of power unit is unlikely to be in high demand. It will be more profitable for the buyer to purchase a more advanced version, which will be both more convenient and cheaper in operation.

Complete set

Currently, the car is offered in four types of equipment, the characteristics and prices of which are already known and publicly available on the official website of the AvtoVAZ concern. There are two basic configurations (Optima and Top) and two packages of additional options available to equip a car with a certain configuration (Comfort - for the basic, Prestige - for the highest).

It is noteworthy that the basic version of Optima (without the Comfort option package) can only be equipped with the first described power unit. All other versions of the vehicle configurations can be equipped with both a second and a third power unit, depending on the preferences of the buyer.

The interior and "stuffing" of cars seriously depend on what configuration the user chooses. For example, the radio and on-board computer are already in the basic version of the Lada X-Ray, and the air conditioner appears only when choosing a version not lower than Comfort. The maximum configuration offers the buyer a comfortable interior with leather elements, a touch-screen multimedia panel (also known from Vesta), heated seats and a host of other pleasant and useful features.

SUV Lada X Ray Cross

The characteristics of the crossover Lada XRay are not yet known. However, it is known that they plan to produce it in two versions: permanent and switchable all-wheel drive. What changes will have to affect these cars in order for them to be considered full-fledged SUVs - off-road vehicles?

First of all, the scheme of power units will probably be significantly redesigned. The all-wheel drive transfers the power of the engine to both wheel axles, ultimately reducing the top speed and agility of the machine in exchange for increased traction. In order for the car not to become too slow, the characteristics of the motors will have to be sufficient to meet the needs of all-wheel drive. It is assumed that the currently used 1.8-liter engine from AvtoVAZ with a nominal power of 122 horsepower will be taken as the base engine, and a turbocharged engine of the same brand, reinforced to 140 horsepower, will be used to equip more advanced versions.

Most likely, the changes will affect the suspension. The characteristics of the Lada XRay Cross should be aimed at ensuring that the car is comfortably operated even in off-road conditions. Still, the front-wheel drive hatchback, although it is the optimal combination of features, was designed primarily for urban use. The suspension, according to experts, will have to be strengthened and modified to fully comply with the portrait of the future SUV.

There is also unconfirmed information that has become available to the public that the concern is going to stop developing all-wheel drive versions of the X Ray. Many motorists in Russia have already expressed dissatisfaction with this fact.

However, the Lada XRay reviews contain too many references to the expectation of all-wheel drive versions for the AvtoVAZ concern to turn a blind eye to them and stop development. As some statistics show, almost half of all motorists are looking forward to the X Ray cross version.
